To be honest the wick would give JH the opportunity to put a W on the legend and the next big thing at once. 2 birds. That’s a nice carrot if you ask me, he’s gotta be thinking about it.

I'd love to hear JH's opinion on Southwick. I have a feeling he would say its not a proper samd track lol. Props to Keith Johnson though. He's brought in a lot of sand to restore it to it's former glory. Its much deeper than it was a decade ago.

John Dowd ate breakfast lunch and dinner at McDonalds for a while when his now wife was working there and he was trying to get her to go out with him. I don't know when that was, but he was married in 1996 and finished 2nd in the 250/450 points in 1994, 4th in the 250/450 class in 95  and 3rd in the 125/250 class in 1996 then 2nd in the 250/450 class in 97.

Maybe we all just need to eat more McDonalds??? Was it the McDonalds that helped him? Or did he stop eating it and that was when his results took a big step up ? Either way, I wonder why McDonald's has never been a sponsor of MX or SX?

Maybe eating McDonalds is the secret to riding sand very fast? I wonder what other great sand riders also dine there?

That would be awesome to see Hearlings show up at Southwick and get that race with Eli he was talking about years ago.

I saw Larry Ward at a McDonalds drive thru the morning of the Southwick National in 1992. He won the 125 class that day.

Maybe there's something to this.

...so, the last couple of years, Jeffery has not been allowed to race in the USA on off weekends from MXGP?

with Sexton leaving KTM as common knowledge now,  do they maybe let Herlings come here and mix it up for some good press?

Problem is if AMA guys beat him in the sand, will JH racing at southwick be a mistake?

Factor in that he is possibly leaving KTM at the end of the year. lots of moving parts here...

Herlings is coming to Southwick to drink Coors Light and play horseshoes with Webb.  Him and Webb will swing a hungover leg over their bikes on Saturday but their main goal is to have a killer time partying while beating 90% of the field.

They have Coenen to win GP's. so for KTM it would be an awesome move. I was at ironman when he won and he was 5 seconds faster than everyone until Tomac put in a heater at the end and was still 2 sec off his time. What a great matchup to see him vs. Jett !

I remember Tomac had never made so many pitstops tweaking the suspension to try and catch up. Looked like Tomac did panic when he saw the 5 sec off 😄

With Herlings poor starts it wouldn't be a walk in the park at Southwick. He was saved in Latvia by having the first gatepick on a start with a 180 first corner. Hugged the inside in both starts .

I'm confused, how is that saved? Do you mean he just pulled a holeshot?

He had the inside gate on a 180. Even Herlings with his "half a bike behind after 10m" can pull a holeshot anyway, which he did in one, and like second or third in the other. He and the bike is just slow over the gate.

But any other start he gets swallowed, as he has been on first races with more open starts.

But it will never be as deep as it was 3 or 4 decades ago. Back then in your first race there, it was difficult to even complete a lap.

The other riders should’ve gone quicker in timed qualifying it they wanted that inside gate, no? Funnily enough, going fastest in timed qualifying & winning the qualifying race gives 1st choice to which gate you pick.

You mean the first few races he was coming back from injury and wasn't at 100%? This weekend is the first time he has been back to at least 90% and it showed lol. 1-1-1. No luck about that.

Doesn't change the fact that Herlings is a poor starter, and have a very big disadvantage on more open starts which was the original point.

3rd is the best he can hope for unless Lucas & Romain pick up an injury.

Coenen (DiCarli) and Herlings are not on the same team.

Don’t they have the pay masters the same though?

My first race ever was Southwick '92. It developed so much differently then. Giant rolling 3-4" deep whoops everywhere. It was so cool how you would go back into the trees off the start. They've cut all those trees down now for spectating

Coenen and Herlings definitely aren't on the same team. They simply ride the same brand bike. Europe is set up very different than the US. The manufacturers don't have teams directly. They fund private teams. Coenen rides for the Decarli team. Herlings has his own, separate team.

Hopefully Herlings will remember Cairoli & Prado helped him win the title in 21 when they were riding for De Carli.

I already have been figuring out the logistics of driving from Florida to Southwick, but I must say Herlings cherry picking the absolute best national track for him on the circuit is totally on brand.

Avoid I-95 and the cities in the northeast, take 64W from Richmond, Va to 81N and go around all the cities. The inland truck route. It is about a 100 miles longer but way better. Easy driving. Scenic too.

Prado was still in the title fight up until this point as was Cairoli until he got injured in Sardinia. When they went to Trentino, Herlings needed all the help he could get after a DNF in one of the motos there. They didn’t put up much of a fight & I believe Cairoli let Herlings pass on the far side of the track on the last lap. That was the race where Herlings over jumped the finish line & went down.

I'm going to be a flagger at this year's Southwick National. I keep telling myself "don't watch the race, monitor your section". With  all the talent in the field It'll be a tough task. Throw Herlings in the mix and I'll be at systems overload. JK. Honestly my goal is to not have Anderson yell at me.... or anyone else for that matter. Looking forward to it. 48 years watching and racing at The Wick (first raced there in 1978, attended my first race there in 77) I'm taking this very seriously, as I should.
