It'd be awesome if a few rounds had concrete, a few grates, a few clay, a few sand etc. Make things alot more interesting. Start mapping, holeshot devices, grates, and now starting blocks peg height have ruined the craft. Cant wait for teams to implement "AI" that detects the gate flinching and launches the bike automatically.
used to have cement at broome tioga back in the day, not sure what other nationals had it.
Southwick has asphalt and maybe since it opened in 1972.
Honestly, just less uniformity in both the facilities and their prep across all parts of the track would make for a more complete series, with more interesting rider and tech dynamics at play.
Concrete is gay, They are call dirt bikes no concrete bikes . Why would I want to ruin my $125 tire in one start

DeCal Works Huge Plastic Inventory of UFO and Polisport kits.
They aren't called grate bikes, either, but here we are with all grates across the top level of the sport.
idk…. I would trade my bike for any bike on the gate at a national. They are pretty great!
Id say have all the starts on a start hill/ramp..like BMX.. I think there was a race with a start like that in a sx race once...
I think we ought to stick to dirt…
No track owners here…
100% agree Paul!!! All concrete starts should be dozed out!! Tire companies love them!!! So stupid!!!
Grates don’t ruin the rear tire in one day!!!
PDUB481 is!
Seriously? PDUB481, just curious: how much did your starting gate cost? Have you ever had to replace it?
Couldn’t agree more. Sadly, this is the trend among a lot of sports - stick & ball sports have exclusively moved to turf. Hell, if even tennis is attempting to make their hard court surfaces play the same speed across the world.
Why does variation seem to be the enemy?
It’s ruined the craft? So I could hang with Jett off the start straight if our setups are the same, got it haha.
Yes we have replaced our gate a few times over the years, had a bunch of friends help, You can build a nice set up for under $2500. The one we are using now is mount in the ground to 6x6's. No concrete anywhere lol lol
We have concrete at the club I ride at. Central Village in CT. I work the gate for the NESC races. All those guys just roasting their tires before the gate drop makes me cringe. You see how much tires cost now?! I ain't roaching my beautiful new tire, I'll take the bad start lol
Seems most of us agree to get rid of start devices, grates, etc because everyone has them and you might as well bring it back down to a blank slate. But the genie is out of the bottle and it's highly doubtful we're going back.
