Your on to something there Dan. No, I don't believe Cairoli's KTM is standard displacement. Just yesterday I was watching a video of practice at Lierop and the bike he was riding had a much different sound than the one Mike Alessi rides.
Here's a story for you and take it how you want to, but when Mike Alessi was in Europe Mike and Anthony were riding together and Anthony's bike was much faster and pulled stronger. When Alessi asked to ride Cairioli bike, Anthony (or should I say his team) wouldn't let Mike ride his bike.
It's legal to change the displacement in Europe, but it's not legal to change the displacement here in the USA. So it's not like KTM is doing anything wrong if they did make their 350 into a .....?, but it would hurt them through their marketing if anyone knew these.
I'm sure you know the sound of Mike Alessi's bike by now and let me just say this, Anthony Carioli bike sounds nothing like it. It's has a much deeper and throatier sound than Mike's. Maybe this is the reason these two riders have had much different results through out the year.
So, do you think that KTM is telling riders which bike they have to ride, or MA chose the 350?
The_wood I know you're asking LB this question but I think Mikey was signed to ride the 350. Period. Just my opinion of course..Just from what...
The_wood I know you're asking LB this question but I think Mikey was signed to ride the 350. Period. Just my opinion of course..Just from what I've heard from Tony A (in interviews) it sure sounds like that. I also think what Mikey's riding is a 350.

In the GP's w/TC and Rui I'm not sure what cc bike they're riding.

My opinion has always been "why would he pick that bike if it was so slow?" I was asking LB, but I always appreciate a logical perspective. I started changing the way I thought about the situation after the Cairoli interview. He was seriously thinking about riding a 450 at the MXoN. Proof is hard to come by on either side of the table...I don't think that anyone will be fully convinced unless they see a picture of both jugs side by side. I'm down with some good benchracing, and I also like hearing what guys like LB have to say.

When I used to drink my drink was Red Bull and Jager on the rocks so I think a Red Bull Jager team would work out just fine..lol As long as the riders don't actually drink it.
Dude, red bull and jager is pretty much the best shot out there...but you just used to drink it as a drink? lol, hardcore man

When Tony A was asked on the podcast if they would rather ride the 450 he said that's up to KTM.

Maybe KTM was really only considering calling the bike AC's been riding a 450 at Colorado. That bike doesn't look too bad compared to 450's and when he ran good at Altitude it would beeven more obvious it's not a 350. Either that or is under powered, and if it's under powered there it's under powered everywhere.

Well, you got me there. I just don't listen to many Tony A. interviews anymore. The last thing I heard about it was the preseason and the GPs, where it was said that riders have a choice of which bike they ride.

It would certainly make sense from the position of KTM contract riders for certain bikes. This sounds much like a conspiracy theory, and I'm always skeptical.

Depending on conditions the 350 is better at some tracks. Look at Southwick too, short start from the inside into 180 turn.

Lierop is also a track that is more about momentum than horsepower. My point on the USGP was that Alessi and Cairoli looked even in speed and power going up those hills. They couldn't get out of each others way. Either Alessi was riding a big bore or Cairoli was on a 350. I would like to go with the more logical one. If Alessi can win a moto on one I certainly believe Cairoli can win a World Title on one.

Then you must not believe that Cairoli's running a 350cc bike then? If you believe Cairolis bike is a 350 then you should at this point be "sold on the 350 in the 450 class". Or you don't think Gp's is the top level.

I'm (especially after watching Cairolis 350(?) at Lierop this morning) not convinced that his bike is a 350. That thing was just tracking and was walking away from all the 450's in the whooped out beach sand of Lierop . There's very few deeper , rougher , and more power robbing tracks in the world than Lierop and the 350 smoked the field. The 350 was even 1st and 2nd in moto 2.

How the h-ll can you tell the size of Cairolis engine by watching a video? Just listening to someones voice on video/phone/irl makes a huge difference.

I've seen and heard his bike irl and it sounds very different from the 450's. I could however not tell that differnce by watching a video.

The soundlevels are different in GP's and AMA nationals, so they should sound different.

I don't know if the use the same videocameras either, but obviously you're the expert in that area...

Yeah and my dad is stronger than your dad...

You don't knw what kind of information I have about MX. I attacked your idol LB because he claimed he could tell the difference in cc from a video on internet. If he knows so much about engines that was a stupid thing to say.

I didn't comment on his side of what happened between Alessi/Cairoli/KTM when Mike was in Europe testing and training. I heard different stories of what happened and don't know which one to believe. Let's just say there's another version being telled by a lot of people over here...

As for the personal insults you wrote I guess they make me look stupid and you appears to be very mature and intelligent!

Tony Alessi said they ride what KTM tells them. Matthes asked if they might be on the 450 next year and Tony said whatever KTM wants, it's their call.

From the sound, you can tell the 350 from a 450 and for that matter from a 250 as well.
People who say you cant are the same people who would ask, " is that a 125 or 250" in the good days. Tune in.

When the Alessi's were out at Millcreek, Mike was on the 450 and looked as if he was using everything it had. Either way if Mike was hired to ride the 350 and sell bikes he giving it all he's got and not throwing anyone under the bus. He's 4th in the points on a 350 and hasn't had the best of luck this year. It's a new model and a new team, he will be up there next year for sure.

I don't believe Roger D, Reed, Stewart & Alessi can co-exist on the same team.

I'm not sure that any 3 of those 4 can co-exist on the same team after the last few years.

LB is far from my idol. You can tell a lot from a video actually and TV is what most of these posts and opinions are based on anyway. It's real similar to the way the Euro guys watch Barcia on TV and come to the conclusion that he would have nothing for Roczen, a kid that was about 8 sec a lap off his pace 2 years ago. Or how Anstie was a guaranteed top 5 when he showed up. Or Searle, or Tyla. If first hand experience is required to post this place would be dead.

From a video most of us can easily see the answers to never ending debates on here like why 250's can run 450 times, where the 350 is competitive, why Mike gets shitty starts, etc. Of course it helps when Mike even says what we're thinking.

You may be right but Mike's comments, his competitors and guys like LB and DC all question AC's bike, and why not? It's perfectly within the rules to run more than 350cc.

BTW, since you have information, do you have any information as to why AC was considering a 450 for Colorado? I keep asking but nobody answers.

He's fourth in the points on a new bike and a new team, new wrench, coming off 3 really bad injuries in a row, he's also going up against Dungey with Goose and bike that has been dialed in for quite sometime, he'll get it together, but i bet you he won't quit, you're going to eat those words.

the only way allessi will ever win is if he dumps his dad and hires some tru professionals and learns t have fun again racing.

the bike he is riding has nothing to do with him not winning.......that kid with his head screwed on straight could win on a rupp minibike!

When you are riding at a hilly track that sucks up an an additional 28% of your hp due to thin air would you rather start w/ a bike that had 10-20% excessive hp (i.e. 450F) or one that was just right (i.e. 350F) at sea level.

I've ridden Lakeway and trust me, it's a 450 track. You need every bit of a 450s power to haul up those hills.

the only way allessi will ever win is if he dumps his dad and hires some tru professionals and learns to have fun again racing.

the bike he is riding has nothing to do with him not winning.......that kid with his head screwed on straight could win on a rupp minibike!
When he was leading the points and smoking everyone on Suzuki before his bad crash his Dad was there. It's his business who he wants around him, he asked everyone very nicely to leave his Dad out of it, you should respect that man. How would you feel if a online community attacked your Dad every time your name came up? In this day and age of BS press releases and mystery, he came online with his true feelings just saying you should respect that or at least appreciate it.

You don't knw what kind of information I have about MX. I attacked your idol LB because he claimed he could tell the difference in cc from a video on internet. If he knows so much about engines that was a stupid thing to say.

From the sound, you can tell the 350 from a 450 and for that matter from a 250 as well.
People who say you cant are the same people who would ask, " is that a 125 or 250" in the good days. Tune in.
You're comparing MA's bike to AC's bike using different exhausts, different dB levels, different locations and probably different audio recording equipment. What makes you so sure they should sound the same?

I don't know for sure, I heard someone who's been with the company several years, I have my guesses but don't want to start a rumor and have it bite me in the ass like usual. =)
