If you have not seen the overhead drone video of the accident, you need to view it before you make any conclusions - the drone video provides the most objective angle. The video from other angles make it look like Cole either intentionally or mindlessly turned back toward the middle of the track. The overhead view shows his bike lurches to the right as if he cross rutted.

I will agree young Cole needs better track awareness, but I do believe this was an accident (like Alphado said)

It was intentionally meant to work either way. 

Can't say I've ever used them for that purpose (other than foot perspiration in the course of their intended use).

However, I can vouch for their effectiveness at muffling unwanted chatter. 😃

Agreed. Drone shows him down the left side, gets cross rutted hard to the middle, and he immediately swerves back into his original line which was unfortunately the exact same line as Smith was in.
