I've seen a bunch of MC stuff in my Facebook feed lately and it got me to thinkin. We call Jeremy "The King" and RC "The Goat" for good reasons. I believe that Jeremy had a lot more talent on a bike than Ricky ever had. What if they had been the same age. What if RC had to contend with MC in his early prime years. I'd also throw in there that Jeremy would have had to be more committed to outdoors. I think that Carmichael's legacy would be a lot leaner if he came along a few years earlier. Would he have become the training animal. Would he have driven Jeremy to train harder? I know that when Jeremy felt like it he was as good as anybody outdoors as well. I watched them both in person a lot over the years and while I appreciate what Carmichael accomplished, I feel like Jeremy may have been the best rider from the USA ever. What does Vitard Nation think?

RC had the speed, but not as much as James, MC was natural talent and style. Coming at it from a "coolness" factor MC is the king. Jeremy's natural talent and smoothness on a bike is what drove Ricky to out train him to beat him. If they were the same age and came up at the same time I don't know that Ricky would have the titles he does. Jeremy was ending his career as Ricky moved into the premier class. MC's win record will never be touched either. MC is also a genuinely nice person not a little ego fragile dick like Carmichael.

Different animals, for sure. Ricky ushered in the era of hard training and 100% dedication to the sport, while MC was the last great party king of '90s MX. If they had raced together, it would have been up to Jeremy to train harder. Would he do it to win? Yeah, probably. I think it would come down to this: RC still nets all his outdoor titles, but Jeremy has him covered indoors most of the time.

Well, fortunately it is not up for debate in SX. The king is the king.

Its a pretty easy breakdown. RC is a lot closer in to MC in sx than MC is to him in mx. Jeremy has two more sx titles than him. Ricky has NINE more outdoor titles than MC. Ricky all day

I think Carmichael would've been the GOAT outdoor racer regardless of era. He was just that guy.

SX is different... if he didn't become the training animal he was, he probably would've lost to McGrath a lot more than he would've won.

RC literally almost has double the titles MC does. If he would have finished out 2007, he would have doubled MC’s total.

Doubled.

MC was a generational change in how the bike…indeed…how the track was ridden.

RC was a generational change in how to train to win. It’s often explained as a higher level of commitment.

When it comes to SX, Jeremy is unmatched.

When it comes to combined wins, Ricky is unmatched.

There’s a 3rd person to discuss, here, but it would become an even bigger shit storm that this thread is already likely to be. 🤣

Hypothetically speaking,

For RC to contend with MC in his prime he would have had to been born earlier. If RC was born the same year as MC and grew up exactly the same as he did in his current life, I think RC would have been schooled by MC and no way would have won 5 SX championships. He probably would have fallen into the same fate as Lusk, Windham, Huffman, etc. MC's progression was so far ahead of his competition from his years of bmx racing and applying what he learned from that sport to supercross. I think RC would have still beat MC outdoors for most of their hypothetical battles and had a lot of success there.

RC had the opportunity to grow up watching and learning from MC. RC wasn't a natural, but he was still able to learn and train hard which led to success. Generations learn from previous generations. It's part of how the progression of the sport evolves. Without MC, there might night be the RC we know as The GOAT.

Sincerely,

10-year-old who was introduced to the sport seeing MC on ESPN in 1993 way past his bedtime.

Every broadcast Rick is apart of he should vacate a career win. It’s only fair. MC by a mile. Rick sucked the joy out of the sport and introduced PEDs. Too bad he was a dogshit driver. Almost got rid of his ass to nascar. Almost.

Totally on topic of the thread and you sound completely unbiased

Yup, RC retired in his absolute peak at 26-27 with more wins and titles in him. MC raced into his 30''s.

Made his money and got out healthy, that's the real win in all of this.

Who was the third one?

(I know right)

RC trained to outlast you vs. sprint and manage the gap.

If the eras were reversed, RC would have had 72+ in 93-2000. I don’t think MC would be anywhere near as dominant if he was racing the competition from 00-07.
