I've told the story before, but here goes... I knocked my girlfriend up at 19, ended up with twins. I was miserable and eating at least 5000 calories a day, all while being very sedentary at work, so I ballon'd from a very fit 185 lbs to 287. Got divorced at 22, was losing my hair, and had twins, I may as well of had leprosy when it came to dating.

I gave up soda's and went about the calorie in and calorie out method and slowly lost the weight over about 5 years. Now I float between 185 and 195 as I am not terribly strict with my diet anymore. That said, I gave up alcohol a couple years ago and do my best to avoid the center aisle's of the grocery stores other than ice cream. I cannot give that up.

This is the way. Calorie counting and make 95% of those calories real, unprocessed foods. My vice is a serving of jalapeño kettle chips while watching Supercross 😂

I didn't read all comments.....but just came to say it all comes down to nutrition.

Calories in = calories out

I just stumbled across this thread. I am on a similar journey. Started in late February at 226 and now down 25 pounds.

I use these tools daily:

- MyFitnessPal

- ProForm treadmill with an iFIT membership

- Food scale

-Oura ring that a friend gave me for Christmas

I got a nutrition specialist to guide me in setting my macros in MyFitnessPal and measure with the scale and log everything that goes into my mouth there. The ring tracks my sleep patterns and heart rate. The iFit membership gives me a trainer and series of planned workouts to follow. Finish a 5 week series tomorrow.

Goal is to lose 40…15 to go.

Started at 270 in Jan 2023.
Cut out all breads, rice, pasta, sugar, soda. Limited what I consume to meat, veggies and, fruit.

Ran on a treadmill before work for thirty minutes.
Came back Home and, hit the treadmill again for thirty minutes before, lifting weights for an hour.

I worked my way down to 201 lbs then, hit a tree riding single track Labor Day weekend of 2023. I Was off work nearly six months recovering.
I waited until two weeks ago before starting from scratch once again. Though I have full use of my shoulder,  it’s an injury that I have to work around.  Starting weight of 213 with a goal of 195.

Ankle Surgery, today. Some bone reshaping & removal of a piece of my fib that broke off years ago (still attached to a piece of ligament! Bone stuff is not unlike fixing spurs), tendon repair re-attach, ligament repair re-attach, some maneuvering of bone and soft tissue to try to “instigate growth” within the joint (osteoarthritis) and…then they go drilling into my hip for some bone marrow tissue do the stem-cell trick…VOILA!

So, as of last week I’d gotten back up to 197 and I’m down to 190…today…as I’m headed into surgery.

I really, really need to get down to 160-170…& that would be a really good thing. I’m only 5’7” these days…down about 1/2” from my 5’8” days…I don’t need to be such a fatty! 🤣

I want to say,”Thank you” for the motivation and the good discussion in here. Really good…discussion & sharing. I’ve already decided that recreational drinking is over (Tequila is a weakness!) and making informed dietary decisions is all of a sudden…easier.

Thanks to all of you and keep it up!

Manny

Thanks! I’m hoping to get everything sorted out before Rip to Cabo and the Baja 1000 (we’re the reigning Pro60 Champs 600X)

Tookillya doesn't really make you fat, it's the beer. 🤣

Honestly, nothing made a bigger (better) impact on my life than giving up alcohol. Sending good thoughts for a easy and productive surgery, Manny.

Dropped another lb when I checked yesterday. I'm going through some upheaval lately and my eating habits are a bit wonky at the moment. I'm definitely spending less time at the table and I'm attributing my slight loss to that. Feel ok, though, so I'm not looking at it as a negative, for now.

My progress has been slower than I'd like. I sort of had to put things on pause at the start of the year.

Long story short. I discovered my heart was beating fast in January, stopped everything, was given the okay to exercise by my family doctor mid-late February, hooked to a monitor for two weeks at the start of the month, got an ultrasound done on my heart, now waiting for my follow-up appointment on May 5th.

I haven't done any cardio because I didn't want to risk pushing it more than it should.

The nurse at the doctor's office asked if I had any symptoms like headaches, shortness of breath, sickness, clammy hands, night sweats, chest pains, etc.

I have none of that. The only thing is that I sometimes feel my heart pounding in my chest faster than usual when I'm sitting/relaxing, but other than that, I feel fine.

My heart rate is normal in the morning and all day if I don't do much/anything. The problem is that I noticed it's still beating over 100 BPM several hours after I'm done working out. How long? I have no idea. I've checked 5-6 hours after being done exercising and it'll still be anywhere between 100-115 BPM. Sometimes it'll be in the 90s.

My brother came over last weekend and he said that I lost weight. I don't know how much, but I ordered a wheelchair scale that should be here next week. Looking forward to tracking my progress.

I had lost a good 30-40 lbs a couple of years ago, but I hurt my shoulder and elbow. It took a long time to heal properly. By that time I had lost all motivation and quit exercising and doing cardio, so I gained it all back.

Do you drink any caffeine at all , or do you take any supplements before the workouts?

No caffeine before working out. I drink one Coke Zero a day in the evening; the rest of the time, I drink water.

The only supplement I take is protein. I take one shake after working out and one later in the evening.

Consider these two items. I can absolutely tell when im low on electrolytes. Plain water doesnt do it for me. I cramp easily if low on magnesium too. The beef organ supplements definitely helped me too with trace minerals. Only eating eggs and steak i was definitely lacking in the beginning.

Pic issues again apparently.

Its just keto electrolytes and beef bovine organ supplements from Amazon. Both in white bottles.

Good luck Manny. My ankle is so fucked on paper, some docs are surprised I can walk. My MRI has so much mumbo jumbo I didn't know there were that many parts inside. I had one attempt at surgery and the surgeon couldn't get any instruments inside the joint to clean it up. At almost 68, I'm over it. I can function well enough and it doesn't bother me to ride so I'll just keep rockin' it.

I learned a trick to help with portion control, someone told me your stomach is the same size as your fist. So when you’re piling food on your plate, try not to get too much bigger than your fist, anything after that you’re stretching your stomach out and shoveling in more than your body is designed to digest in one sitting. I’ve gotten real good at making my fist huge, like when OJ was trying on the gloves 😕😄 But it does help. I have a bad habit when I’m loading up my plate thinking I need more than that, I’m still gonna be hungry. Then you eat the whole pile and you feel like you’re gonna explode.

So it's not that I have big bones, it's my big hands? 🤣

After 4-6 weeks of eating clean you will realize that most foods that are bad for you, now taste like shit! This is because you know how they may make you feel once you start to digest them

Was up to 255 2 years ago after shoulder surgery.  BUCKLED DOWN and cleaned up my eating, started doing walking daily along with Crossfit 4 days a week. Down to 211 and plan on keeping it going.

I take 2 calcium-magnesium tablets a day. I can't walk, so it was recommended to help prevent bone loss/density and osteoporosis.

My SCI specialist scheduled me a bone density scan for the end of May, so we'll see if it's helping. I have my doubts. I broke my leg/knee several years ago pushing/bending it when getting dressed. It still makes a weird pop when I get leg spasms.
