The whole economy is down not just MX, anyone able to make enough money to live and do what they love should be stoked.
I agree that the top 100 riders in the US should be making enough to survive without having some sort of sumplimentary income i.e. extra job, parents money. But they are not the only one's hurting, At least they get to twist the trottle whenever they want.
And lets look at it another way... If I were running a team I sure as hell wouldn't spend $200k on a rider that couldn't break into the top 10. You add that salary to the rest of the costs for each rider (bikes, travel, mechanic) and the cost of running a team and it would be out of control.
Think about the risk and how much shorter an mx guys career is compared to them too.
Nicky Hayden isn't even on the list?
It really is one of the last "cash" big business's
10,000 folks through the front gate-OK...we lied......prove it, X $100 for the full weekend with vehicles....that's an underestimate.
Seriously, when is the last time you swiped your debit/credt card to sign up? It's mostly cash..ching...ching
All the way to the bank.

Dont let the school statistics fool you into thinking that their graduates make more because the numbers are likely inflated or exaggerated greatly because it is like advertising and gets students to come to your school and also it makes the school look more prestigious. All college shows is that you are capable of learning a semi complex material and are able to follow direction and that is what employers are looking for. Plus with the way capatilism is run as soon as most are qualified to move up they are replaced with another graduate to keep overhead down ....now that isnt 100% of the cases but sadly it is a majority of them....wish I would've known then because I would've chosen a major based on money and not something I liked to learn....the college system is a mess nowadays.

Of course these two are not the only two riders from America who will be coming back to race Grand Prix Motocross. With the current recession in America that golden goose of high wages in America is now a thing of the past and while the top few names in USA might make great money, the guys around 5th to 10th place in both Motocross and Lites are struggling to earn the sort of living they are used to. Pit Beirer summed it up in his interview at MXlarge when he mentioned the crazy payment system in America. Here is a short comment from Beirer.
Beirer: It isn’t so easy, because salaries for the top riders in America are really high. It’s crazy; you don’t have a mid range like in Europe. In the World Motocross Championship we have a lot of riders who make good money, but in America it is like the top riders make really good money, but the next level don’t make hardly any money. I would say the top five guys are making money in America. For a number seven guy you have the same cost for the bikes, mechanics and that type of thing, but with the second level guy you can never win, you can’t show how good you are, so we have to eventually enter the level of the very top guys.
They get paid around $1000/wknd "Travel-Expenses". ($28K for 28 events)
They get $10K, $20K or $30K for a 1st thru 3rd (Would you expect the Team to pay for Non-Podium finishes?)
Many of the Faster-Middle-Class get a "Base-Salary"...let's say $30-50K-ish...
Some, a very few, have their own gear or sponsor deals.
As others have said: The idea that -5- guys are makin' money is jus' funny. Are the Salaries lower than the peak of the Industry? (2006-2007ish)
Yes.
Let's not FORGET how many JOBS have been CUT in this Industry, O.K.?
On the other-hand:
JS7
RD5
RV2
CR22
Moss 712
Shorty and Davi
JG & JB at JGR
Trey
Frenchy & The P.C. gang (including Hanny)
27
Hill
IT9 & The Valli Crew
K-Dub & Metty and the FC crew
The TLD Team
T-Hahn & the Rockstar Energy Suzuki Team
Alessi & Searle
...ALL-MAKE-MONEY.
Many of them have had a pretty damn good deal in 2010.
Some better than others, yes; but, they ALL get PAID...& they get paid REAL WELL when they PRODUCE RESULTS!
The Idea that only a limited FEW make any "Real Money" is jus' funny.
There are other Teams; but, I think this list of a HELL OF A LOT MORE THAN -5- RIDERS makes the point.
There are plenty of guys makin' a good livin' at this.
I'm jus' sayin'...
The motorcycle industry is at it's worst point on several decades, to think they'll dump more money into salaries is naive. They're all in survivor mode right now, and many more shops will close down at the end of this selling season.
Salaries have always been looked at as low, and the old adage still rings true that the only way to become a millionaire in racing is to start with two million...
Basic economics, supply and demand dictate the salaries....
Having said that..
You guys would be shocked if you knew how little money Reardon, Byrne and Cunningham make at Valli Yamaha. And that's just the guys that I know for sure. I'm just sayin...
