Self moderation is underrated.

I moderated myself out of non-moto on January 1 of this year. I realized that i was turning into someone that I didn't like, so I pulled the plug on myself (over there).

Dirt bikes are still one of the greatest pastimes I've ever had - like to keep it that way.

I noticed that Gerry, and I give you props for it.

Me and Sam talked about this same thing several months ago, we havent been there much either. I like your cold turkey approach, may do that myself.

Guy, you probably should have posted this, and removed the "allow comments" option, and left it at that. IMO

Hide post counts so only moderators can see them.

Low post count can lead to newbie trouble.
High post count can lead to arrogant vet bullying.
Desire for high post count can lead to BS posting.

Does the public post count do anything other than feed egos and stratify the population here?
You do have a point, but the fly in the ointment is that if the grumpy old vets don't recognize a name, even if that person has been around for years but has a low post count, they will STILL go after them.

Sad but true.

It's not that you have to be a saint 24/7

You have a poster account, and it's like a bank account ~ you don't want it to be overdrawn. Good posts are deposits. Being an asshole makes a withdrawal. If you get overdrawn, you start bouncing your asshole checks and trouble starts. Don't fix it and keep writing those bad checks and it's adios time.

Noobs can't start out writing bad checks.

Old timers have to keep making deposits to stay current if they want to make withdrawals.

The board works when people who want to play rough play well more often.

Like I mentioned, I think non-moto is a cancer to a healthy moto board. It polarizes people who really are here first of all to talk about a common love for moto.

Gibby can use Non-Moto as a filter though.

The hotheads that go and faceplant in the Non-Moto mosh pit can get the big click and the moto board doesn't get the mess.

Besides ... how are we supposed to talk about vintage Les Pauls without Non-Moto.

It's whether not weather and BL hasn't done shit, he generates hits for this site and was one of the main reasons I came here to start with because he says funny shit. He is one of the reasons for the success of this board, it damn sure ain't the grumpy foul mouth X rider or the know it all mystery men. There's been some low down shit posted here including anything from wishing harm on someones family to the totally god awful ripping the shit out of a certain pro riders Father, but nothing happens to those guys and BL has never came close to lowdown crap like that. My 2 cents: the new owner don't like BL and Guyb is stuck doing what he has to do, speaking of which, I was on another site one time and this poster got away with murder, no one could figure out why until we found out the mystery poster owned the site........sound familiar.......insert twilight zone music here.......
I don't own the site, I don't get away with murder, I didn't wish harm on anyone's family and the only reason you want Lenny back is so you can antagonize the hell out of him again.

And FTE is correct about Non-Moto. I'm not sure it should be omitted completely, just that the political and religious ideologies on both sides need to be kept in check.

Actually, Grendel, the problem is when idiots somehow find a way to segue from an MX related discussion to politics, religion, racism, etc.

How the hell do they find ways to work that shit in there?

All I can say is when it creeps in, I run out.

And, that's the answer. Shit storms can't gain any traction (whatsoever) until and unless the first person who gets torqued tells the original poster how torqued they are. The fish are at least as much to blame for any 'transgressions' as the anglers. The shit-stirrer (patent-pending) is a two-man device. There's no way to solo it.

Shouldnt this thread be in the Non Moto sectionWhistling Cheerful

I visit this board every now and then, It is always a good read. Have been on here back and forth for a few years, post every now and then.

There is a lot of good content, sometimes it just takes ten minutes of reading crap to find the next sensible and meaningful post that actually has something do to with the topic started.

I would sugest deleting every post in every thread that had nothing to do with the topic started, lol but if that was done there would not be many posts left!

I've seen the rise and fall of a few moto boards...heck, I might have contributed to the rise and fall of a couple...and one of the things I've learned is that if it involves people and relationships, nothing ever stays the same. It's one of the sad facts of life, really...just when you think you've found the perfect chick, the perfect relationship, the perfect message board...no matter what it is, it's going to keep evolving and turn into shit.

I remember when you sent me an IM, telling me you were beta testing a little message board and there were only about ten of us on it. It was just something you were doing for fun and you weren't exactly trying to market it. Then the whole Mikeee Pissant thing blew up in his face and MT went to PPP and Fat Bastard and I (mostly him) steered a few folks over here....it was the wild, wild west of motoboard days!

Through it all, GuyB, you've been remarkable in how you've managed to keep it fairly orderly in here, while not alienating any huge blocks of people. And you did all this while at the same time moving forward in your career, to the point where you were able to get your employer to compensate you for folding your little side project into a part of your real life gig!

That's pretty cool and you have my respect for pulling it off. There's a lot to be said for being cool, calm and collected...

My guess is that you'll weather the influx of assholes just fine, Steve.
Excellent.

Does discussion polarize people, or merely reveal already polarized positions? I think stupid people are the cancer.

I stopped browsing non-moto around 2008 largely because I do not share this particular community's mostly conservative socio-political values. I come here for the moto, but I have no stomach for the foolishness I imagine is still brewing in non-moto.

Bob, I can't help ya. I've felt I've been on the verge of a major withdrawal all summer. Make some deposits. My advice, more old school videos, less Alessi. Tongue

It seems part of the reason for so much BS on the moto-boards is the moto-media's high level of self-censorship. The core fans can't find the info/details to satisfy our cravings and thus two things happen: we're bored but still crave moto, and were forced to speculate on things we have no way of knowing.

In order to combat this long standing problem I would suggest starting with more rider interviews with less pad questions and more crucial questions. Interview at least the top five after every race, and include questions about race/industry politics as well as focusing on their racing insight rather than just "how they felt" and so on. For quick reference, take a look at the mma media for example. Less secrets equals less BS. Just give the people what they want and we'll all be happy.

I see, so the riders need to give more personal information and take more of their and the medias time to give more in depth interviews to appease some nerds on a moto message board... (myself included...kinda)

we'll see how that goes

Back in the day, this place started out as a small group of friends. There was plenty of good-natured ribbing, lots of riding discussion, and people pretty much knew where to draw the line when it came to bashing...whether it was riders, or each other.

These days? Damn, I know the economy's bad, but wow, I can't say it's just that. There sure seem to be a bunch of grumpy people. It's fairly tough to find anyone posting anything positive, and it doesn't sound like anyone's having any fun. I thought we were all here because we actually liked the sport. Am I wrong? There are quite a few of you who act like you need to get some riding time in to put a smile back on your face.

Then I get goofballs who sign up repeatedly about as fast as I can click them, like it's some kind of game, and board vets who've been clicked a bunch of times, and when I'm slow to let them back doing everything they can to get back on, down to calling me a racist. I've gotten to the point where I've decided that there are some guys (even when they're moto fans) who aren't worth trying to rehabilitate, mostly because they don't add anything to the board even when they're here.

Yes, it's summer, and yes, there are a lot of new members. Part of that is due to school being out (which accounts for a few of the "Which _________ should I buy?" threads). Props to those of you who give them a decent answer. Most of us were probably in that spot at one time or another. Heck, I've done the same thing this summer regarding the trailer I'm traveling in this summer on RV web sites.

I'm sure I can already hear the, "It's because we can't haze the noobs argument." I don't mind if people get called out for posting dumb stuff, but a blanket "STFU noob" for anyone new who shows up? That's what I've always objected to. Besides (ahem), a bunch of the board vets here could do a lot to step up their game when it comes to post quality.

I'd like to suggest that everyone do what they can to add to the quality, and think before you click the submit button. Does what you're add to the board? Or ad to nothing but your post count? My favorite posters have always been the ones with not a whole lot to say (they go for quality over quantity), but make you sit up and take notice when they do post.

So...what's your take? Anyone agree or disagree?
Why yes....yes I did.

What is reputation?

Reputation is a way of rating users depending on the quality of their posts. If the administrators have enabled reputation, then the reputation icon will be visible in posts.

Reputation may be positive Positive Reputation Icon , negative Negative Reputation Icon or neutral Neutral Reputation Icon. Negative reputation may only be given if the administrator has enabled this. Neutral reputation is only given when the person giving reputation does not meet the criteria set by the administrator to affect someone else's reputation.

How do I give reputation?

To give reputation, click on the reputation icon in the relevant post. This will reveal a form to complete with the reputation type and the reason for giving the reputation. If negative reputation is disabled then it will not be displayed in this form. You may not give reputation for the same post twice.

How do I know what reputation I have received?

You can view the reputation that you have received in your User CP (User Control Panel) where it is displayed at the bottom of the User CP page. Here you will see the latest reputation that you have received and whether this is positive, negative or neutral. Your total reputation will be shown as series of reputation indicators in your posts and profile. The more positive your reputation, the more positive icons will be shown. The more negative your reputation the more negative icons will be shown.

How much reputation is given? What is reputation power?

If the administrator has enabled this, the amount of reputation that each user will give (or take away if negative) is shown in the user's posts as 'Reputation Power'. The value of the reputation power is determined by the administrator and may increase over time depending on the settings they have applied.

What if I don't want anyone to see my reputation?

You can disable the display of your reputation by going to your User CP and selecting Edit Options. On this page you will find a check box labelled 'Show Your Reputation Level'. Un-checking this box will remove the display of your reputation and replace it with the Reputation Disabled icon. You can still give and receive reputation while your reputation display is disabled.
