Ill start off by saying i know how to seat bounce. From sx triples to seat bouncing out of corners or even AX catapults..
But... This picture makes me question alot...
Ive noticed it in other pro pics as well..
His toes are under the shifter. Looks like its on one of those big 3 in jumps. My brain says no way because im not causing an accidental shift.. Ive even seen them "hooking" the shifter for more upward leverage.. But, how do they not accidentally shift or catch neutral?
Wheelie boyz have this down too and hook the shifter during some of their wild wheelies.

They’re just that good
Upshifting one or two gears in the air.
Im a habitual seat bouncer but pretty sure my foot is not under the shifter when I do it….I been trying to seat bounce less, I seat bounced myself into orbit last year and landed without the bike😂
That's typical before a set of whoops, which i can understand.
On a different note, 29 years of moto and I've been doing whoops all wrong. Finally took advice and started going up a gear. Tremendous difference in keeping the bike settled..
I only seat bounce if i have to.

It's a cool picture but I don't see the amazement. If you keep your weight on your legs your foot won't inadvertently hit your shifter.
Try shifting without unweighting your left leg.
I'd wager that Sexton in that pic above is 100% aware of exactly where his boot is and has complete control over whether or not he's going to hit the shifter. The same with any other pros.
Whats with the down voting? Some of yall just not like miester? lol
They hook their toes under the pedals so they don't get ejected from the bike. Tomac does it as well. There was some chatter about it a year or so ago.
I was thinking the same thing!
Did you know that you can hold the shifter down and it still stays in gear?
They're just goons who likely dont even ride or if they do they suck... Lol
Yeah, but i just imagine a smidge too much movement and, click.
I have to have my foot like Sextons if I want to shift in the air after seat bouncing. It's hard to move from the ball of your foot to underneath the shifter in the air.
He's already grabbed a gear and he's fully using it for leverage at this point. No rider is keeping their foot under the shifter off the face of a jump if they haven't already grabbed the gear.
Fair enough. I guess they do use 1st on some big jumps out of corners then may get into 2nd rest of the rythem so that makes sense in the factory transmission life. Lol
Sandusky, id usually shift after i get the pop im after. In most cases I cant remember a spot where id H VE to upshift after something id seat bounced tho. If im seat bouncing its usually in 2nd n 2nd does so much specifically on my yz..
I wonder if he shifted to like 2nd on the face and his foot is still just in there, on the return click. Because I can't imagine that is a "prep" positioning with how dangerously close that would be to accidentally upshifting in that exact moment. But I suppose it could be. I would just assume if he needed to upshift in the air, he would take-off in a more normal positioning and then shift once he has enough lift. Not sure, as I don't up-shift in the air ever lol. Interesting photo though, for sure. Good catch.
.. a team secret for years.
The gear change has already happened. Holding the shifter up like that dosen't hurt a thing. He is doing to stay on the bike.
Pit Row
I have a habit of hooking my foot under the shifter like that on fast straight a ways. I can tell you from experience, transmissions do not like what I do. Especiall blue ones. Red ones put up with it longer, but not for forever.
This 100%….
Ive seen pics of roczen hooking the bottom of the peg too.
If I am tapped out in a gear during a seat bounce I am ready to shift the asap in the air to help keep the bike flat and get ready to accelerate on landing. I have no idea where I place my foot on take off though.
