Has anyone flown with forks recently?

I have them packed safely in a gun case already.

Is it a pain ? Can you sneak them thru with the oil in them ?

You’re checking them, right?

You’re good. They can have oil and air in them if they’re checked.

I would definitely put an airtag in the case too.

Just zip tie 1 to each leg and tell them you need them for support

Listen to BoxcarWilly...Pay the money for the cover.

I'v  often flown with engines and suspension. Make sure the goods are clean, doesn't smell...I've always coated with lemon silicone spray so if they inspect it smells nice..

Good luck.

LAX takes suspension 9 times out of 10 but every other airport doesn't seem to care.

I always put a note in saying what it is or a poster with the bike.

I've flown with rifles, why would suspension be an issue?

They’re far less likely to know what it is

100% agree. I've personally had a set go "missing", and know lots of others that have as well.

I flew some years ago with fork and shock. You could not have anything that might contain traces of oil or gases. Used gun cases for it. Took cartridges out of outer fork legs just to make it visible there wasn't anything in them.

I even had printed and put inside a reference to TSA case showing it should be allowed. TSA LAX (to Chicago) did not allow it. They removed despite discussions and the reference to a previous case and policy applicable. Luckily I had a friend that could take it and send it separately since I would have missed my flight otherwise.

So if you want to be sure and are sending it in one piece, you send it with Fedex/DHL/UPS etc as separate shipment.

Maybe they have changed policy last years for regular flight.

We have travelled with it many times.  Had it flagged and removed on 2 different occasions.  No rhyme or reason.  Once was LAX after being on 5 other flights that week.  The guys said it was pressurized and had oil in it, I showed him all of the air was out but he kept pointing to the valve.  I told him we were on flight 5.  He said don't blame him for being better at his job than the other 5 guys.  I didnt have the heart to tell him he wasnt as good as he thought he was because he missed the shock that had oil and was pressurized.  LOL

I also head LAX is the worst/most picky. If they are to follow exact policy (unless changed recent years), it's pretty much impossible to get anything through.

I cleaned everything with Isopropanol. They would still be able to find traces/residues of oil if they tested it. Not sure if they can do swipe test similar to drugs and explosives?

I don't think it is worth the risk. If shit goes sideways and you have brought that onboard your are fucked. Maybe even get in trouble even if nothing happens, if you try to take something onboard at the wrong airport that you know are breaking the law/TSA guidelines.

Put a tracking tag in.

Ask Justin Starling about his SX suspension being “lost”

Justin was flying back from racing a European SX race and had to race the Charlotte playoff on bone stock suspension then he had to fly to NJ and standing at the other side of the wall tell them exactly where his gun case with suspension was.

Thanks guys. I’m flying from a small airport to a small airport, so I hope it should be hassle free.

I like the AirTag idea.  Just ordered some.
