I respectfully disagree with the assessment that liberalism is the product of ignorance. There are well educated, intelligent people on both ends of the political spectrum and idiots on both ends as well. The idea of justice as fairness- that the government ought to redistribute wealth to benefit the poor - was the view of the most influential political philosopher of the 20th century, John Rawls. I assure you, Rawls was no dummy. I tend to agree more with his Harvard colleague, Robert Nozick, who made the case for a more libertarian view of the role of government. I highly recommend Nozick’s book Anarchy, State and Utopia if you’re interested in a top notch critique of liberalism. 

I will say, though, that the leftist bias in academia is quite significant. When I was a philosophy professor I would teach Rawls then Nozick as well as another libertarian Jan Narveson (who I had the pleasure of interacting with at conferences on several occasions). I had several students tell me that my class was the only one where they heard any serious presentation of a more conservative approach - by serious I mean I put it in its strongest possible light rather than straw-manning it just to knock it over. These students would say things like “this has to be wrong but I can’t say why”. I’d simply leave them to make up their own minds. I actually knew quite a few libertarian leaning philosophers. Philosophy is a pretty intellectually rigorous discipline where you’ll find less of the pseudo intellectual bs that is rampant in most humanities disciplines. Things have gotten stupider over the years to the point where I’m glad to be away from it and working for an accounting firm.

Not economics (I know economics at only a rudimentary level)- Rawls basically offers a philosophical justification for the welfare state on the grounds that if you didn’t know where you’d fall on the distribution of wealth, you’d want the least well off to be as well off as possible because you could easily be one of them. Societal wealth is seen like a big pie and the state should have in place mechanisms to ensure that everyone gets enough. Much more to it but I don’t want to write an essay. 

Nozick argues that it’s wrong to think of societal wealth as a big pie that someone gets to cut up and distribute - someone baked that pie and that means that the baker has a right to it - your neediness doesn’t create an entitlement to the pie. Rawls argues that everyone deserves a minimum standard of living while Nozick argues that deserving is irrelevant and it’s entitlement that matters. If I work for what I have then nobody else has any legitimate claim to it, no matter how needy they are (though I can, of course, be charitable). Liberals tend to find Rawls compelling and conservatives tend to be more aligned with Nozick. Grossly oversimplified but that’s the general gist. Liberals and conservatives tend to have fundamentally different philosophical intuitions on these matters.
