4 strokes

Not trying to start another war here, but I was just watching some of the first motos on Alli an gees, 4 strokes sound like sh11111ttttttttttt.

Now 2 strokes are music to my ears.

DC we need to change the rules if for no other reason to turn the races back into a well tuned symphony instead of sounding like a long row of port-o-sh1ters on a construction site after all the boys ate a bunch of bomb burritos for lunch!!!

My KTM 640 is quiet as a mouse. It's not necessarily four-strokes just the lack of adequate silencing. Especially on the ones with hi-performance cans that show up at local tracks & riding in the woods behind people's homes. A teenager was riding around my neighbors pasture yesterday on a XR70 minibike, the sound from that thing was obnoxious. No wonder people hate dirt bikes. I started up my RM125 later & rode around my lot.. so quiet!

How often when some jackass drives by you blasting his "old dirty bastard" rap do you hear the treble? How about never.. All you hear is the bass. Treble will only travel short distances and bass you can hear and feel blocks away ..

I went to a harescamble this weekend. Raced the bikes in the morning and was hanging around and bench racing with my buds after the race. This was during the quad race and they were so loud we could not hear each other. THIS HAS TO STOP. I do not know how loud the bikes are( because I was racing), but the quads were way to loud. This was on private property and I talked to the land owners before I left to thank them for letting us race on there property. I ask them if we can come back next year he said we will see. It was an A.M.A district 15 event and the tech was to make sure your kill button worked. Come on people this is not going to work. Sound tests are the only thing that will keep us racing on great property like this.

Don't hold your breath on getting invited back but what is really important is people got to race their loud bikes and quads today so who cares about tomorrow?

As you can tell from some of the responses in this thread this sport's biggest problem isn't the tree huggers but the lack of caring of the people who ride bikes and quads.

That's okay guys.....just start saving your money now for electric machines then you can bitch about how much they cost.

nothing like the sound of a 250f on the rev limiter...........?

reminds me of a bad curry exiting the corners quickly

The organizers of the event could make it a rule that all competitors bikes be fitted with a DB Dawg, or a quiet after market pipe. But they don't. One of the tracks I practice at has that rule in place, and most people abide by it.

True, the race 50's are obnoxious when standing trackside. Nowhere near as loud as race thumpers when you're a mile away, but loud nonetheless.

It wouldn't be a perfect world and we'd still have our challenges but idiots running 100 plus db exhausts and riders who have never repacked are a huge part of the problem IMO.

How many people you know are running 94 db inserts and repack on a regular basis? If someone truly loved the sport they'd be doing this regardless if they had to do it or not.

It is easier to blame others than own up to we all have a responsibility when we practice or race.

Pretty sure you disagree based on your post but they got it almost forty years ago less sound=more ground.

Why don't the masses get it now?

.... 1 thing you are ALL over looking

Noise and dust have been a problem for dirtbikes and non-enthusiasts for 40 years. It isnt some magical creation stemming from 4 strokes. It might seem like that due to more information now being shared on the internet. Used to be you only heard about something locally, now you hear about every single thing in the country. Its no more or less than it used to be, but now instead of a 50 mile radious to yourself to its a 3000 mile radious.

"the sweet sound of a 2 stroke...." ...... to us only. To anyone else, its an annoying pack of bees ruining your weekend.

Not saying 4 strokes and the wavelength their exhaust produces isnt more of an issue, just saying sound has been a problem for a LONG time. That and tracks that used to be located just outside urban area, now as things grow and expand, what was once a track 3 miles from anything is now a track with 3 housing developments across the street.

Why are people like you so good at stating the obvious but NEVER offer anything positive regarding what we should be doing?

Of freaking course dust is also an issue but are you inferring since there are other factors than noise we shouldn't do anything about sound? I just do NOT get it that some people seem to rationalize away efforts to deal with noise with the tired refrain "well if it isn't noise it will something else."

Since my self contained watering system just broke the only thing I can do something about is to ride and promote quieter bikes. Until someone comes up with a better idea i will continue down this path.

My recent USGP experience was also more agreeable to the ears than the two Nationals I've been to since the FIM uses the 2 M Max test and the Nationals are supposed to be sound testing at 94db static test...........................

EDIT: Your last paragraph is Starwest but do you think they are doing any sound testing or having any sound requirements? Ditto for Barona Oaks? You think any of their neighbors kids will ever ride a dirt bike based on the I don't care attitude of these facilities?

I get it. We (OHV enthusiasts) have to appease the masses, we are not the masses, the tree huggers are. There are cars, truck, motorcycles, boats, helicopters, air planes, stereos, dogs, lawnmowers, weedeaters, blowers, etc right in the city that are MUCH louder than my motorcycle and I don't ride it in town.
