Great pic of the Vegas 80 Expert start, 83 was an epic year for mini talent.
Old school to me (first bike in 1980 for my 13th B-Day), anything from 1967 until 1989. Point is, like several have said, it depends on "your" era. But 25 years should be the general rule so these young punks do not start trying to muscle in any sooner.
I had a 12ft that was the old Motocross Action magazine's trailer. I bought it from Jim Moore.
Scott I remember yours, it matched your van I think.
Bob Moore's; 35 foot 5th wheel
Mouse McCoys; Honda paint
Mike Healey; white
Paul Denis; white fiberglaass
Lance Moorewood; Kim Douglas used to change in it at Saddleback
Shawn Kalos; side door Suzuki and Honda colors
Scott Brown
Kyle Lewis
Bruce Bunch

When you race your old bikes while your new bike collects dust you might be old school.
I think if your willing to come in here and read all the posts on a regular basis you might be old school.
There are different levels of old school of course.
I know, that's a cop out answer, but it's really true.
Well, it's funny you mention the 1978 trans am series. I tore this flag off in the tree section at Saddleback that day and here it still hangs in my garage. I remember Decoster rolling by and some dude name Lacky. Needless to say, this is old school! Saddleback 1978.
Pit Row
I too bought a Pro Trac trailer from Eric Kehoe. It was painted in Honda colors, around 1983...if I remember, he had just got a ride with Suzuki.
Oh and by the way AEIOU, if you knocked me off the track and I didn't get you back that moto, I'm sure I went back to the truck and sat there waiting to race you again. What did you say about after the finish line jump in the 2nd moto? Sorry about that if I did anything crazy. I had a bad temper back then. I'm pretty mellow now a days. Well, maybe not that mellow. ;-)
Those were really fun days. Young and fearless. Man age sure changes a person.
Good luck the rest of this year and next. Hope to see your team at the races soon.
A rubber band start
Having a scar on your ribcage from the rubber band start
Full Bore boots
A full face helmet for MX
Scott goggles and a JOFA after getting rid of the full face
Buying a Scott face guard and trimming it around your JOFA
Lancer leathers
Griffs
Powroll cams for your XR-75
Laying down the shocks on your XR-75
Remembering the first "real" 2 stroke mini that was competitive, the YZ-80C, and buying one immediately
Camping at the tracks in a car or van with your parents
Racing BOTH the AMA short-track and MX qualifiers on the same bike, on the same weekend
Trophies that came up to your shoulders
Moving up to the 100cc class thinking it was the "big time"
Qualifying for the final race during the NMA nationals
Triangle banners marking the course
Meeting all the other riders and learning their "strange" accents (Gene McKay, Ben Theriot, etc...)
Carrera goggles
Old school to me is an already old 1979 pick-up with canopy arriving in the pits about 10:00/11:00 p.m. the night before the race after working all day on the farm. Unloading the bikes, gear, gas, etc so you can make your bed in the back of the truck. Waking up in Washougal to the sound of the dads (that get up way too early) telling lies and having coffee around a fire pit and your sleeping bag damp from the morning dew. Then racing two classes, one on a year old worn out bike and one on a current years bike because you could only afford one new bike a year.
Then on pro day watching a young Ron Lechien in the pits coughing up a lung after EACH moto like he was going to die. On hands and knees literally gasping for air until he finally coughed up the Washougal dirt (or whatever it was) and was able to breath again.
Then Bob Hannah after the race signing a beautiful young laddies "laddies" and lifting her shirt up and sticking his head under to "make sure that the pen didn't leak through to her skin." Classic!
Oh, and watching Chuck Sun actually jump the "Chuck Sun Jump" at Washougal!
I really wish we could go back to this time and do the things we did then. That was the best time. Riding all day and never got tired, hanging out with your parents going to the races, at the races all the parents would get hammered drinking beer all day and all we had to do was ride our mini bikes.
Anyway AEIOU thanks for posting that photo, it really brought back memories. So much that I signed on and started posting. Thanks for the good luck wishes. We should be back on the track at the race very soon. Doing some outdoor testing Thurs and Fri in hopes to hit the final few nationals. We'll see how that goes.
This is certainly Old School!
Hannah and the bunny hop!
