Old school.... walking both ways uphill, in the snow, barefoot. One room school house with 250 kids and one teacher. And they all still got straight A's and cleaned the whole house everyday. Oh wait, that was my Mom talking.... Flashbacks from 1983, sorry.

Great pic of the Vegas 80 Expert start, 83 was an epic year for mini talent.

Old school to me (first bike in 1980 for my 13th B-Day), anything from 1967 until 1989. Point is, like several have said, it depends on "your" era. But 25 years should be the general rule so these young punks do not start trying to muscle in any sooner.

Is there a current number of years that qualify as old school? I consider old school to be anything from Hannah on back. as far as racing goes and I know he didn't quit till 87.... Is the resurection of a bike that came with disk brakes and upside down forks really old school? In cars, its mid 70's on back....Seems like old school around here is early 90's......If you are bringing back a maico, penton, carrabella, old husky, ossa, or anything like that I would consider that to be old school.......Just a rant.. take no offense....
How about anyone before and up to, who owned a Pro-Trac trailer....that would be old school by now wouldn't it?
I had a 12ft that was the old Motocross Action magazine's trailer. I bought it from Jim Moore.
Scott I remember yours, it matched your van I think.

A buddy of mine still has his Pro-Trac. Unfortunately, it's seen better days.

Mike Healey; white
Paul Denis; white fiberglaass
Lance Moorewood; Kim Douglas used to change in it at Saddleback
Shawn Kalos; side door Suzuki and Honda colors
Scott Brown

You know you are old school when you can sell off all of your old stuff on Ebay and make a killing. I sold some old honda dealer posters and got on average about $100 each.

I think when you have to look really hard for gear you would be seen in you might be old school.

When you race your old bikes while your new bike collects dust you might be old school.

I think if your willing to come in here and read all the posts on a regular basis you might be old school.

There are different levels of old school of course.

You know you are old school when all you wanted was a pair of JOFA shoulder pads, High Point boots (The ones with the chrome plate front finish), and Scott goggles with tear offs, a pair of gloves that did not have just a piece of rubber sew on fingers, and finally a "Good times van" with mags and side pipes to take you to the races. When Bel-Ray signs decored your bedroom along with a Marty Smith poster. Yamalube stickers on your dads toolbox, and NGK plugs laying everywhere in the garage. Looking for every new copy of minicycle action, hoping to see your name in print one day. Does any one remember why we would rev our bikes up and down to WOT, to off, on the starting line, when the number 1 plate was about to turn side ways? I later was taught by Steve Wise just to leave the throttle 3/4 open when the sign went to 1, when I went to his motocross school.

Of I forgot any thing that came from DG on your bike, and having an A.J. Whitting Snail pipe on your YZ, with a full flywheel CDI.

Well, let's see Mr. 50. I think it all started for you on a Italjet at a place called SADDLEBACK PARK. It closed in 1984, so let's call old school anything before; well 1984!

David Bailey was on a #45 semi-works Kawi when he picked me out of his dad's class for a play ride up in the hills of Whitney.

Personally for each one of us, it's all "relative".

I know, that's a cop out answer, but it's really true.

Well, it's funny you mention the 1978 trans am series. I tore this flag off in the tree section at Saddleback that day and here it still hangs in my garage. I remember Decoster rolling by and some dude name Lacky. Needless to say, this is old school! Saddleback 1978.

Old school is having 6 Montesa'a and still racing them twice a month.....and your newest bike is a 1983 CR480R....

I too bought a Pro Trac trailer from Eric Kehoe. It was painted in Honda colors, around 1983...if I remember, he had just got a ride with Suzuki.

I think everyone on this page is "Old School". I think it's a state of mind. We lived in that era, so we don't think it's old. But if you ask an of the mini riders now a days what's old, I think they would say anything older than 1990. :-)

Brooks #2, Mouse #52 Probably Bob Moore #3and Eddie Hicks #7 on the Yamahas, # 151 Bruner? Healy #99 on the Honda behind #151. It was one of the last races for Larry on the R&D 80.
Were you an 80 expert then?

No not Bruner! That's me on the 151. I actually one that moto. Knocked Brooks off of one of the big berms in the back. He got me back in the second moto after the finish line jump. That was my home track and I was a nobody so that race was cool for me.
PS who is the rider down in the picture? Hint, he posts in the old school section ^
Wow, I just saw this photo. I look huge on my R&D Suzuki. Man those things were fast then. I think this was right before I got off mini bikes. I don't remember this race, but the dirt look terrible.

Oh and by the way AEIOU, if you knocked me off the track and I didn't get you back that moto, I'm sure I went back to the truck and sat there waiting to race you again. What did you say about after the finish line jump in the 2nd moto? Sorry about that if I did anything crazy. I had a bad temper back then. I'm pretty mellow now a days. Well, maybe not that mellow. ;-)

Those were really fun days. Young and fearless. Man age sure changes a person.

Yeah to me you were big, super fast and seemed like you were a grown man already. I was scared you were going to kill me after the first moto (sorry about that). Hey, I deserved what I got in the second moto and it makes for a good story. X2 on the fun, fearless and age.
Good luck the rest of this year and next. Hope to see your team at the races soon.

Old school is:

A rubber band start
Having a scar on your ribcage from the rubber band start
Full Bore boots
A full face helmet for MX
Scott goggles and a JOFA after getting rid of the full face
Buying a Scott face guard and trimming it around your JOFA
Lancer leathers
Griffs
Powroll cams for your XR-75
Laying down the shocks on your XR-75
Remembering the first "real" 2 stroke mini that was competitive, the YZ-80C, and buying one immediately
Camping at the tracks in a car or van with your parents
Racing BOTH the AMA short-track and MX qualifiers on the same bike, on the same weekend
Trophies that came up to your shoulders
7/13/2010 8:55am Edited Date/Time 7/13/2010 9:00am
NMA qualifiers that were in 5 different states

Moving up to the 100cc class thinking it was the "big time"

Qualifying for the final race during the NMA nationals

Triangle banners marking the course

Meeting all the other riders and learning their "strange" accents (Gene McKay, Ben Theriot, etc...)

Carrera goggles

I agree, "old school" is what old school is to each indivudal and how they remember it...

Old school to me is an already old 1979 pick-up with canopy arriving in the pits about 10:00/11:00 p.m. the night before the race after working all day on the farm. Unloading the bikes, gear, gas, etc so you can make your bed in the back of the truck. Waking up in Washougal to the sound of the dads (that get up way too early) telling lies and having coffee around a fire pit and your sleeping bag damp from the morning dew. Then racing two classes, one on a year old worn out bike and one on a current years bike because you could only afford one new bike a year.

Then on pro day watching a young Ron Lechien in the pits coughing up a lung after EACH moto like he was going to die. On hands and knees literally gasping for air until he finally coughed up the Washougal dirt (or whatever it was) and was able to breath again.

Then Bob Hannah after the race signing a beautiful young laddies "laddies" and lifting her shirt up and sticking his head under to "make sure that the pen didn't leak through to her skin." Classic!

Oh, and watching Chuck Sun actually jump the "Chuck Sun Jump" at Washougal!

Like I said I had a really bad temper back then and pretty much until I was around 35, Ha Ha Ha. I was always blowing up about something. And if someone took me out, man I couldn't even see straight until I got them back. I think back at what a dick I was and wish I would have acted a little different, but you live and learn. I guess I still have a temper, but I control it a little better these days.

I really wish we could go back to this time and do the things we did then. That was the best time. Riding all day and never got tired, hanging out with your parents going to the races, at the races all the parents would get hammered drinking beer all day and all we had to do was ride our mini bikes.

Anyway AEIOU thanks for posting that photo, it really brought back memories. So much that I signed on and started posting. Thanks for the good luck wishes. We should be back on the track at the race very soon. Doing some outdoor testing Thurs and Fri in hopes to hit the final few nationals. We'll see how that goes.
