The power delivery, the reliability the jackknife bike that it is. Now four years later I am second guessing myself for the annoyances I am getting from that head.

Flywheel weight, blueprinted engine, torque pipe... the KTM 300 is looking better and better.

Dont mind me Im venting. Brand new head with new shiny bits are on the way. So far costs have been the same amazingly in comparison to what I spend on a pinger but shipping delays are annoying.

Yesterday when I was pulling my 200 out of a deep muddy rut I was really happy that I did not buy the 450 I was considering.

Another one of my friends is dumping his 450 and going back to the simple life of a 250 smoker. He said it was a combination of the costs, the weight/feel and little things ... like having to pull the tank in order to change plugs, change engine oil every two rides, etc. And fear of the grenade factor.

He seemed to have a lot of issues with his bike though. It was an 07 ... and yellow. Same color as a lemon?

I have kept track of ever dollar spent on bike maintenace for two 450f's and one 250f for the past two seasons and it has worked out to be 500 LESS than what we were spending on a 125, and two 250 two strokes.
Clean air filters every ride. Change oil every 2 rides. Rebuild top end at 40 hours. Stay off the rev limiter. Thats it.
I do miss the smell and sound of two strokes but lap times don't lie.

(Lack of) Clean air filters is what got me I suspect. I got lazy and said eh...Well im here now. As far as costs they have been pretty right on. The only part that has killed me is the need to send it out for new seats and valve installation. 9 times out of 10 I do all work in house. Cranks, Valves and head stay bearings have to go out. Maybe I invest in some tools.

I would jump on the two stroke deal if it wasn't for the fact they vibrate more then Lovely Louella's Steely Dan. I'm curious what I could get out of 300 if added some crank weight and smoothed out the engine. The only downside is the displacement. I'm fully an open class rider. Even on my fit days. Minus the horsepower robbing altitude I wonder what the 300 makes as far as HP.

Thinking out loud. Like I said earlier this has me questioning myself.

I've had both and the 300 doesn't need a heavy flywheel. Also it will run with any 450 until it tops out, which is too fast for most riders. Has unbelievable torque too, if I live long enough I will have another one with the e-start.

If you followed that same maintenance intervals with the 2 strokes I don't see how it could possibly be cheaper, I know it sure as chit isn't cheaper to maintain the RMZ the kid is riding now compared to his last RM125.

It might be easier to go fast on a 4-stroke, but it sure isn't as fun to ride as a 2-stroke.

I'd rather have fun.

My RMZ450 is for sale. Riding a KX250 now. I am faster on the 450, but I have a bigger smile while on the 250 two stroke.

Tell the truth, you sausage. You got stuck in the mud because of the pipey wheelspin on the 2 stroke. The rear end broke loose and you slid into the rut, then you revved it and got wheel spin and dug deeper...

Can you do the same amount of laps on the KX as you could on the RM? The arm numbing vibration is what kills the two stroke for me. I haven't ridden much new 250's other then CR's so I don't know if they are any less in the vibration. 500's forget it. I have never known a bike to put my feet asleep until I rode a KX 500.

Wow, it made that much of a difference? Congratulations on loosing the hitch hiker. You got your Dr. to prescribe the surgery didnt you? Or did you elect to do it yourself?

I passed so many stalled stuck 4 strokes in my last race that I lost count. All you have to do is get up behind those lard asses in the tight shit and rev you 2 stroke like there is no tomorrow and those fuggin heroes(thanks oldtiddler) panic and stall those pigs.
Reminds me of the ole Johnny Cash song Pig Irorn.
If you actually knew how to ride SS guard you would understand, but I'm sure your 450 has awesome graphics.

You sir are full of shit.. did you read what you wrote... you lost count of how many 4 strokes that were stalled in your last race... how many about 15 maybe 20 4 strokes, all stalled.. hmmmm.... Then you come up behind 4 strokes (why are you behind them in the first place) and rev your bike and the 4 stroke riders panic out of sheer terror and actually STALL their bikes....hmmmm..... I"ve got it figured out....you're going onto the peewee track calling it a race and scaring the fuck out of the 4 year olds.....Please close that crap despenser you call your mouth....you're being overly dramatic....
