Personally, because of the amount of classes ata GH race usually and the absolute randomness of the bumps (especially the downhill)…I’ll go a little softer on compression and a little faster on rebound. Get things moving a bit more basically. At least faster rebound on the fork for the downhills. More bumps, quicker I want the fork to return before the next bump.
I race GH a lot. It is risky to make a change between motos. I try not to but once in a while I will. But only if I’m super confident in the direction I’m going. Not just a shot in the dark.
I also lean towards going softer on west coast rough. Lots of bumps but none very big. no jumps at GH is nice for being able to go really soft. Softer is not great for the downhill but tbh there’s usually only 1 on a regular race weekend so I’ll deal with it there. I also run a super soft high speed setting. This soft high speed seems to help me with acceleration chop.
I would say your best bet is go to GH on a Thursday afternoon & test some softer & stiffer settings. Bring a screwdriver to the side of the track. Do 2 laps after an adjustment, pull in make another adjustment. Only do 1 adjustment at a time. Don’t do compression & rebound at the same time. You won’t know which one made the difference if you make more than 1 change. The ultimate takeaway here is that you’ll know what an adjustment will & kind of what the effect will be!
I’m convinced no adjustment could get me ready for this. Insane. Hats off to whoever shot this 👍
It's so interesting how each has a different approach to rough. We ride GH regularly. I tend to go in on comp and out on rebound.. Never like the feeling of the bike rocking around with the lack of knowing where is front wheel is.

For me, racing at GH is a setting between motocross and offroad. Like a GP set up, there aren’t enough jumps that make it need a stiff set up, for me.
For second moto, like ML said, I’m normally 1-2 click softer compression and 2 clicks faster Rebound. Rear I would do HS comp and Reb as well.

Yes going up that hill with those square edge kickers was a challenge and luckily was overcast most the time. I actually went 3 clicks stiffer on my forks and should have stiffened the shock too but didn't. Not knowing Glen Helen at all my bike was probably too soft going in. Was a fast track that weekend with some cool sand sections with good berms and lines.
I'm in the "don't make an adjustment for the 2nd moto" camp. I tend to set my suspension up at the beginning of the season and then leave it, however, so take my recommendations with a grain of salt.
I make changes for GH in general but not for the second moto. Just 2 clicks faster fork rebound. Everything else works well with my current setup.
