Have you ever injured your shoulder or collarbone while using old-style armor with suspended shoulder (hrp, and other vintage's)?

Long story short but I was chasing another vital member around in woods at Croom in Florida. Not sure how he made it through but and was close lined off bike from a thick vine and the HRP took most of the blow so it was only a 1 separation. My throat was cut and bruised some also.

The HRP cup cracked from the blow it had absorbed was well worth the investment for another HRP shoulder pad.

I saw your post in another topic, glad you were lucky.

And what do you think would have happened to your shoulder if you were wearing a leatt 6.5 protectorjacket?

Btw your hrp looks really worn, if it is opal colored, it is much weaker, maybe if it was new it wouldn't crack and save your shoulder.

Its actual red chrome and it 100% did its job! I am not a bruiser so You can tell by the bruising how hard of a hit it was.

Without the HRP my entire shoulder and chest would have been a pile of broken bones.

Yeah i see now. You have no bruise under the shoulder protector. The hrp suspended protector worked perfectly. My guess: shoulder protector get hit, it is flexible, so it wants to expand, but the suspended part prevents this and in the meantime receives tension and transfers it to the chest protector. So, as long as the shoulder protector doesn't get hit so hard that it craks, your shoulder only gets a small hit.

Can you measure the hrp, if it’s not too much to ask?

ga_pike: Fox roost 2 doesnt have the same system, just looks similar. Not suspended, just attached!

What do you use and what are your experiences with it? Aren't they too hot in the summer? Are they comfortable?

There is a reason not a single company (that isn't stuck 25 years ago) makes this style of chest protector anymore.

My dad swore by them after breaking both collar bones in crashes before he switched. I was always skeptical about it but he never had any problems again. He wore them under his jersey in the summer heat and didn't seem to have an issue. hockey shoulder pads make sense because the players are hitting each other with their shoulders throughout the game. Hockey shoulder pads are not the end all be all but they protect far better than shitty mx pads

This is the same chest protector I was referring too. I think it's hard to form concrete evidence from crash data, but this thread shows one common denominator.

Like boxcarwilly said, a reason why no one makes them that way anymore.

I broke my collar bone and scaphoid (shoulder blade) in two separate crashes wearing my 00's No Fear chest protector. Also the only bones I've broken this far. Replaced it with current Leatt, much more comfortable. No shoulder injuries to report since but, like others said, a lot of variables.

I also thought about hockey/football shoulder pads, but in that sport, people collide frontal, which is what shoulder pads are designed for. If you hit a tree frontal with a bike, and the impact hits your shoulder first, then it is certainly good. What do you think about this?

Thats what I was wearing when I tore up my shoulder. It was a Thor from early 2000's. Love my Leatt.

Antiquated design that has long overstayed its welcome. Modern protectors do a better job, are lighter, have better ventilation. Companies like Alpinestars and Leatt dump thousands of dollars into developing new technologies to help improve safety and their products. I don’t understand why the OP is overlooking this.

He might as well ratchet strap some pillows to his shoulders. 😆

I dislocated my shoulder 6 times in the late '90s to early '00s. No chest protector on Earth would have stopped it, as my arm was leveraged out of socket. It was not from impact.
For impacts, almost any protector will do. I'd say the suspended designs probably help to some degree. I wear a minimal one now, but it's mostly to protect the spine and solar plexus from handlebars and footpegs; not so much for roost or any kind of shoulder protection.

No fear is the "same" as modern protectors, lying on your shoulders, thats why it did not protect them. image 741

HRP shoulder protector floating over the shoulder, so it can work like a spring, just look this huge gap: image 742.png?VersionId=YFlydgGknw3z0HOpZTGk

Btw anyone know about leatt mission protector jacket? https://www.24mx.com/product/leatt-mission-body-protector-graphene_pid-… Its just 90 usd and says CE level 2. Scam? Could I wear HRP over Leatt? Or buy a soft d3o protector jacket (i know that modern materials spread the energy well ,but I don't think it protects the joint well)?

Hrp netting is like a shock absorber a cushion for the impact.  I cart wheeled  numerous times & never injured my collar bone. Most people that break them break them numerous times.  ND wind& rain b4 the snow storm is bad.

BTW the hrp sadly not available in EU, i just used the hrp as an example bc there were a lot of result about the hrp, but no one know the zero7 idx1, its also suspended, check this https://www.dirtrider.com/tests/gear/141_1101_jett_america_zero_idx1_mx…

What do you think about this? And this leatt mission have just ce level 1 shoulder protector, even the best 6.5 got just level 1 shoulder protector. Maybe this is the real reason about why arent the modern protectors effective?  "A protector subjected to this test method is deemed to conform to this standard if the average transmitted force of nine tests is:

less than 35 kN (EN1621-1 CE Level 1), with no single test result exceeding 50 kN, and

less than 20 kN (EN1621-1 CE Level 2)"

Hey! I found this video,  and the zero7 shoulder protector can be moved up and down https://youtu.be/lFHjInz7HuI?t=53  Is this the same with hrp or is it fixed?

Friend broke a collar bone 1985 wearing the HRP.  Not sure if it made a difference or not.

Ok, dumb questions. I haven't ridden in so long, is this what people wear now, or is this a street bike type jacket? If it's mx, is it hot?  Do you wear a jersey over it?  https://www.motosport.com/alpinestars-bionic-tech-v2-protection-jacket

If it's not what you wear now, what do they wear now. I see a lot with jerseys over some kind of protectors.
