Old series popped up on the YouTube so watching: they said Mac hurt his leg at Millville and I think I remember reading it was trying to tie together two tabletops…
Does anybody know what jumps/where it was? Watching the race there isn’t anything obvious I don’t think?
I think it was in the little s turn section before the sand whoops. After the start.
I think you are correct! I was there and seem to remember a single and a table top that he tried to jump both!🤷♂️
Man, that is a tough one to find. Not sure the jump, but pretty sure McGrath said he cased it and his foot bent over the peg.
That is where I remember as well. I looked at that and wondered how he thought he would make it. I think he landed in the face of the tabletop.

I thought he was the whoop monster's first casualty?
I think it was a tiny double to a table top , b4 the whoops. It was the same in 97 I thought of doing it on my 95 yz125. But the main line inside is slick hard under the sand. MC probably spun hard & didn’t get a good drive. I was a little surprised he got here there because doing double to table top it wasn’t a big jump. But with wheel spin you can’t do it with 55 hp or 32 hp. Just doing double then table top was beginner level stuff. Then a mound to fly into the whoops. Cool cam corder vid of MC 96 there on yt. But not the crash.
Surprised he got hurt there, this phone is soo bad. Changing words
The two jumps right before entering the whoops back then. A little corner before the jumps.
I thought he cut his foot on a broken beer bottle at Rynos house
It was in 1997 (not 1996).
Yep, everyone is pretty close here.
It was Saturday practice, before the Sunday race.
Long, sweeping straight after the start into a 90 degree left hander that is affectionately know as "Bob's corner".
There was a single roller to large table. The single was right at the exit of the corner, like just past the apex. He tried to go out wide and hit the single to jump onto the table. Landed directly into the face.
We saw him leaving in the passenger side of his box van with his foot on the dash, wrapped in ice. I didn't see it happen, but was there and had ridden the track the day before. You would look at it and go, "what!?, how!? what was he thinking!?" Like no way, just no lift on that single and was a solid 60ft and a 5ft tall table.
It's the proverbial double edged sward. The same confidence to allows you to dominate, can be your downfall... Too bad as we was on a roll that year again!
I remember that moment! It was on that double jump right before the finish line. Mac was trying to clear it, and it seemed like he overshot, which can definitely happen on a tough track like Millville. I’ve seen so many riders struggle with that jump during races; it really tests your timing and confidence. It’s always a bummer to see someone get hurt, especially at a spot where the pressure is on.
It wasn’t there!
Before the sand whoops there was a left turn, then a single, then a tabletop. MC tried to double on TOP of the table top and came up way short. It happened right in front of me. Saw the whole thing. He hit so hard into the face of the table top you could feel the ground THUD. It was during practice.
You are correct! You must have been standing within 10ft of me. The big “Thud” of him hitting felt like it shook the ground.
Cool. Thanks guys!!
Any pictures or video of this section from that race? I’ve always been curious too
I remember in a column he used to write in DBR magazine here in the UK he said the impact was so hard it bent the subframe and the shock bolts 😲
