First motocross win I remember was my 3rd or 4th mx race, but my first in Anchorage Alaska. My dad bought me a new 1984 CR125 and I entered the novice class. First moto I won by lapping everyone but 2nd place. They moved me to expert in between moto's. I ended up with lots of 4ths the rest of the year and only raced mx once afterwards. Now I'm just a fan of mx and don't even have a mx bike.

Not moto win story but all happened the same summer of 1982-
First race ever (at the old Deer Valley track), first turn of first moto someone falls in front of me so I run into them. Didn't crash, but put my foot down and someone else runs into my ankle. I finish the moto, no idea what place (mid-pack). Get back to the truck, and realize my ankle hurt like hell. Six weeks in a cast.
Couple months later, second race ever, I get a decent start (Canyon Raceway) in the first moto and finish third. Second moto, I go into the first turn with the holeshot. Some little dick named Jimmy Button (who was like 10 years old at the time) cuts across my front wheel and takes me out in the first turn. Still came back and finished third, but got smoked by a 10 year old...
Per our usual program, my dad brought me to the track and watched practice, then went home to get my sister and came back to the track. On this day, he didn't get back to the track when it was time to go to the line for the first moto, so I was more nervous than usual. I was talking to a kid on the line who had just moved up from the 80cc 9-11 classes and he was even more nervous. I told him to just take it like any other race.
When the gate dropped, I motored out to my usual mediocre start, but went wide in the first turn. A bunch of guys went down and that cleared the way for me to move up to 2nd. After half a lap I realized that the leader wasn't pulling away and it was the 12 year old I had been talking to on the line (I was was a manly 14.) I felt less intimidated than ever before and decided to try a pass. Needless to say, a 12 year old beginner didn't put up much of a fight and I got right by. I cruised around to an easy first moto win that was made even better when I saw my dad on the side of the track, cheering me on.
I don't even remember the second moto but I won the overall on points after taking 3rd. It ranks right up there with the births of my children as one of the best days of my life.
I'd moved up to a 250 2 stroke that year and had been struggling to hang on to it and was finishing mid-pack every race. We'd made some changes to the bike during my exam period like a hydraulic clutch to try and reduce some arm pump and some carb spacers to soften the power a bit. It had been raining all week and the track was really wet and greasy clay. I headed out for practice and just went slowely for a while to get to know the layout. The conditions were really tough and people were really struggling but those are the conditions that I really enjoy because it's less about who can keep it pinned the longest and more about actual throttle control.
I checked the lap times after practice and was somewhat surprised to see that I'd set the 3rd fastest time, this gave me a huge boost of confidence. A woman that we were parked next to said after practice that I looked like a bag of nerves before practice but that now I looked really calm and relaxed. In the first of 3 races I got off to a really good start on the uphill start straight and was in 3rd exiting the first turn. Half way round the track there was a really wet, boggy section with one main rut round the side that everyone usually funnelled in to. When we reached this section both the guys in front funnelled in to the rut, I knew this was my chance so I grabbed a handful of 250 2 stroke throttle and kept in pinned through the middle of the bog passing both of them in the process and taking the lead. The conditions were reallly tough and I knew that if I just stayed on and finished the moto that I would probably finish in a decent position. I ended up checking out and winning my first race 52 seconds ahead of 2nd place. I was so pumped and couldn't believe that I had gone from being mid pack before my exams and then had come out and won my first race back by such a large margin.
I had the fastest lap time and knew that I could be on for a good result at the end of the day. I got a shit start in moto 2 and ended up having to ditch the goggles after a few laps (something I hate doing). I crashed at one point but managed to finish 6th. By the 3rd moto the conditions were drying up a bit and people were picking up their pace. I got a shit start again and made it up to 4th near the end of the race, then on the last lap I made the move to 3rd. I crossed the line and started to pull off the track only to realise that there was one more lap, I had dropped down to 4th because of this but managed to get back to 3rd. 1,6,3 moto results gave me joint 2nd overall with the tie breaker going to me because I had a moto win. I look back at what a great day it was getting my first moto win but I kick myself at the same time because I definitely could have taken the overall win on the day with the speed I had in those conditions.
Needless to say I'm not that lucky.
Millville track against a lot local and regional fast guys in the 40A class and managed a 3rd overall. The stars lined up for one weekend and it May be my most gratifying race and a fond memory. I don’t race Millville anymore but if you ever get a chance it’s worth the trip.

Most of the time after that it always felt easier when I won than coming 5th or 3rd or 8th, I suppose when you click it just does.
Resurecting this thread for the 3rd time, was started back in 2014 under my original username "Sir Roostsalot". How did you feel winning your first moto?
My first win was a let down. I didn’t start mx till 23 and I was bumped out of C class prematurely before I could start winning and the same happened in B class with only a second place finish to hang my hat on. My first win came in the +30 class but I was kind of a sand bagger if I’m honest. I’ve had top 5s in A class that were far more satisfying then seeing the checkers first
1991 at a club race on the local track. My first race in the PW50 class. 3.5 years old.
