Could that have been the greatest race of all time?

I know theres been a lot of great races, but holy cow. All of the greatest riders in the world were there all in the same race riding for their country. This was the final race this is for all the marbles.

You had everything from a Tomac holeshot and him leading the first part of the race, to the tomac gajser battle where tomac passed him back like 5 times. You had USA winning mxon for part of the race before australia passes them to move into the lead. You had jett start in about 12th which never happens but everyone has always wanted to see him come through the pack. We watched jett have to battle through herlings, prado, tomac, hunter…etc and get through em all on the way to gajser. Then when jett gets to  gajser you get to finally see jett hang it all out on the line and ride as hard as he possibly can which is another thing ppl have always wanted to see.

For like 8 laps these 2 guys were riding as hard as they possibly could and laying it all on the line, they were gonna die trying. Jett could have settled for second and just coasted to his mxon win, but instead he was willing to throw it all away just to try to get the race win! He almost did a few times! Gajser was going to do everything he could to not let that happen. That save by jett landing sideways into those huge ruts was crazy, then his inside pass on tim was like nothing ive ever seen. This continued on until the last lap where the race looked like it was over half way through but timmy battled back to close up on him with a few corners to go. Then jett makes a mistake which brings them side by side! Tim takes his last shot and makes a last ditch pass 2 corners to go and jett tries as hard as he can to recover but thats it theres no more track left he wins the freaking race! Absolutely wild!

Is there any other race that had so many different factors like this? Obviously well have to see where it ranks after some time has passed, but wow that could go down as the greatest race of all time. Idk how there have been ppl saying anything is boring this year this has been an incredible year of racing and to cap it off with maybe the greatest race of all time. Bravo!

That was one for the history books. I wonder how the MXON haters are doing?

The MXoN had my entire family watching and cheering today! My 80yo mom, who almost never watched a race in her life, was cheering every time AP made a pass, my wife was rooting for ET (she’s from Colorado) and one of the kids was looking up the various flags and letting us know what country they were. Then the last turn pass on JL had us all on our feet!

Great race! Thanks to ET, AP and CW for making the trip, you guys are American Heroes!

Great showing by the AMA boys; I believe this is the first time the MXGP regulars got shut out of the top 2 podium positions.

Another great moment was during first few laps of moto 1. It was Tomac, Prado,Gajser, Herlings, Roczen and Febvre all together within one to two corners, just until Herlings fell. So awesome to see so many elite and legendary riders together going for the win

Most exciting race of the last two years at least. Really makes you feel a bit cheated as an mx fan, one moto a year with the worlds best (not injured) riders facing off

Definitely the best racing of the year, on either side of the pond.

Awesome old school motocross track.

Along with the amazing racing, I think Team USA having to eat humble pie the last few years changed the “us vs. them” mentality just enough. It was there, but it felt like there was a lot more respect and appreciation all around.

Also thanks for the reminder about Jett’s pass! I rewound the tape to see that one a couple more times. If he had run away from there it would be the most talked about moment.

Nice write up =).

For sure its the best race and event of the decade. Heck even the 1st race of this nation was the best race of the decade.
Best race of the millenary maybe, but I have short memory when its come to race, I wont go ahead of myself and say its the greatest race of all time.

One thing for the sure I didnt scream at my screen this hard in a long long looong time. Those opening lap and final laps was insane.

Best race of the year without a doubt. Loved every minute of it. Congratulations to Tim Gajser, Jett Lawrence and Kay de Wolf on winning their classes. Congratulations to Team Australia for winning the MXoN for the first time. And congratulations to Team USA and Team Netherlands.

The only thing I have to bitch about is the fact that we don’t have a series with all these guys racing in it. Damn shame it’s once a year, but that race sure was fun to watch.

I was there, and it was an amazing final race for crowd reactions. So many moments of everyone going crazy. That final pass by Gajser, the entire place went mental.

We [GB] had a pretty terrible day all in, with Anstie hurting himself, but Conrad Mewse did very well.

Getting to see so many heavy hitter names in one place, like Tomac, Roczen, Jett, Hunter, Herlings, Webb, Prado, Gajser etc, on a track just a few hours from me, was an all time experience. I'd love to get over to Ironman next year.

The US had a very impressive setup in the paddock, as you'll have probably seen on the Weege Show. I think they've upped their game a lot in terms of strategy and prep, which will start paying off more and more as years go by.

Good number of US fans over for it, I got to speak to many of them and they were all great people.

Gasjer was making that pass regardless if it took Jett out or not.

Yea having all of the big names there was amazing. It may be the last time ever. Weve been talking about how so many top ama guys will be retiring soon but herlings is probably getting close to retiring and tim is getting up there now too. Roczen probably only has like 2 years left and eli has 1 year left.

As a side note… how great are eli’s starts lately? Ever since he came back for smx hes been ripping holeshots like nobodys business. Now that hes older and doesnt have as much beast mode left if he can stay ripping good starts thats gonna go a long way towards keeping him at the front this last season.

No… I guess it depends on what you mean by greatest.  Imo, there wasn’t enough passing and close action to call it the greatest race of all time. I’ve seen amateur races that were more exciting than that.

I suppose it depends on what criteria you all consider makes a race “the greatest race of all time.”

Without a doubt, it was a great race and maybe the greatest MXDN race I’ve ever watched, but even that is questionable. It might’ve had the greatest names on the track all at one time…maybe, and if you’ve only lived 20 or 30 years and haven’t seen a lot, I could understand this being the greatest race you’ve ever seen.

I believe Jett mismanaged the last two laps, and Gajser was an animal and made him pay for it!

Without a doubt, in my mind, with that pass Gajser is King of the motocross world right now….even though Prado is the world champ and Jett is the American champ.

You’re only as fast as your last race.…But was that the greatest motocross race ever?…. certainly not the most exciting one I’ve watched.

Yes, wow!  My glasses are clean!… and yes, I am obviously older and have seen more races than some of you.  I take all of you peeps comments…. after all, this is vital.

And you originally said there was no passing? How many times did Eli and Tim go back and forth?

It really is criminal we don't get to see the best in AMA and MXGP face each other other than the MXdN. Fuck SMX, let's get 3 races of theses guys all going at it. 250's vs 250's, 450's vs 450's, no team tactics and giving up gate picks. I know it's easy to say that and disregard all the logistics that would go into it. One can dream though

It was great enough to keep me locked in through all 3 races. Stayed off of social media to avoid spoilers. I had planned to watch motos 1 & 2, then SNF, then 3. Couldn't turn it off. Somebody upstairs delayed the kickoff so I got to watch both. Excellent racing. Mad props to ET, CW and AP for stepping up.

Seeing Jett ride in person was just amazing. He is so light on that bike.

I spent some time down in the bottom of the valley near to where you walk up to the paddock, where the chicane-type corner is before they head up to the big tabletop in front of the main crowd. You could barely hear his bike as he came through; he seems to ride a gear up over most of the other riders, and never cranks open the power while in the air, which is what Fernández was doing while chasing.

Any kid looking to a top rider for a style / technique to imitate, he is the one. Sexton is a close second I'd say.
