This weekend’s MXdN is the 40th anniversary of the Australian team’s first entry. In those 40 years we’ve placed in the top 4 only four times. Before the Lawrence brothers we only had a single podium; 2011 with Reedy, Metty and Mossy.
This year Australia is considered a favourite, perhaps for the first time? Though I’d put France and the Netherlands, and maybe the US, at better odds.
However this got me thinking about MXdN history. IF the Aussies were to win:
When was the last time there was a new winner? I.e. a county winning for the first time.
Also, when was the last time a county won with a rider that hasn’t been a regular in either AMA or MXGP?

The last new winner was the Netherlands in 2019. Last team to win with a rider not in AMA/MXGP was France in 2017 (Christophe Charlier).
Even Herlings praised AUS and is expecting them to win. I think the biggest advantage they have (besides the Lawrences being at the top of their game) is Webster having over a month’s worth of seat time on the 250 at the Lawrence compound. They are coming into this race very prepared. The equalizer will be the weather imo.
Damn didn’t realise, the Netherlands hadn’t won before. That’s cool.
And thanks for Charlier. Though I should have clarified I meant a rider who hasn’t been an AMA or MXGP regular . I’ll edit that.

We certainly have our best chance ever to take the trophy.
Will be a shame if we can’t find a good 250 rider to back up the Lawrences over the next 5-8 years. With them at the top of their games we should be in a position to win more than once over that time period.

Last team to win a rider who had never been an AMA/MXGP regular would be Czechoslovakia in 1975 (Miroslav Novacek). At least, as far as I can tell. MXGP results back then only list riders who finished in the top 10.
I dunno what's worse, a chance or no chance haha.. I'm trying so hard to not entertain the thought but I keep getting accidental moments of excitement haha
I just keep reliving the 'our best team' moments in my head like Byrner crashing out of the event in the opening laps of the first moto that time with our team of Reed, Byrne and Metcalfe.. Or Sharky breaking his back about 4 foot out of the gate in the quali race at Budds when it was Reed Byrne and McFarlane.. Some may be thinking that those teams aren't really THAT strong and that's probably my point haha
Not to totally derail the thread, but do you guys have anyone in the pipeline who can back up Cole Davies? That kid’s gonna kick some ass when he goes pro.
Levi Townley. He’s still a few years off though.
Forgot about him. Do you know if he’s planning to go to the States, or GPs?
Not sure what the programme for Levi looks like, if i had to guess a season or two of emx125 and then stateside.
