If you had to take away one thing from the line which would it be. Holeshot device or starting blocks and why.

Grates. Then start maps, then HS device. Starting blocks I don’t have an issue with.

Dead engine start Standing in front of the bike with front wheel in between their legs and shoot a gun for the go signal or rubber band starts.

We dont need no stinkin gate !

Get rid of grates and holeshot maps. Make the riders pack their own gates like they used to. Part of Motocross is being able to pack your own gate well and choosing a good rut.

Grates I agree. But I also think if you do that riders should be the only ones allowed to pack gate.

What's the goal here? The only start aid that creates an advantage is a dialed start map, all of the other implements are even for every rider.

This, although HS devices I might want to keep. Almost as much a safety issue as a performance enhancement with those. We've now used the new grates at Washougal for 10+ race drops, and it's ridiculous how easy it is to get off cleanly. No skill needed at all - just pure reaction time.

1. Grates… riders pack the start

2. Start mapping… it’s almost to the point as motogp

3. holeshot devices, they are just lame, learn to use the clutch!

Yep, even across the board. Pretty sure there aren’t any factory holeshot devices or factory grates!

Curious.  How do you think Holeshot devices make starts safer?

Way to many still wheeling loosing control over bike. Since feet's can't reach the ground and a higher front with steeper seat angle just makes it harder to pull back and get back control.

IMHO the change in weight distribution reducing wheelies off the start often helps in the lower classes since they don't have the greatest throttle/clutch control or a lot of experience. Seen too many wheelies 3 feet out of the gate that result in a sharp left or right that dominoes the riders next to the goon.

With better riders you could remove them and not have as much impact. Most of the other start aids are all about allowing one to pin the freaking throttle and let the electronics save you. I was shocked at how many guys at Washougal now just put it in 2nd, launch control on, TC on, get on the tank, pin it to the limiter and dump the clutch. With the grate it's really hard to screw up a start, where with the old dirt start it took some skill to get out clean.

Grates and then start devices.

Not starting blocks, some of us can’t touch the ground!

I see holeshot devices as the opposite on safety. They stick, and can cause bad accidents later down the track from doing so. Also, generally a loop out on start has a relatively low chance of injury, and isn't really much of a concern past a very beginner level.

The question as to what should be eliminated could have different answers depending if your aiming it at amateurs of pros. I don't see start grates at many amateur tracks....

Either way I'd get rid of holeshot devices in both. And grates, for the pros.

As a vertically challenged person I don't see the issue with starting blocks, although I have never used them.

I've always had the opinion holeshot devices made starts more dangerous cause everyone gets to the first turn in a tighter pack but what you're saying makes sense too.

You see a lot more gate drops a year than I do for sure.

At least 200 in the last 2 years. Crazy that we’ve not had a single crash on a start in all that time. He’s almost always in the top 5 and that sure helps.

Give them some proper raised starts every now and then. Kinda like a BMX start but probably not as extreme.

Also a  sharp stutter bump about 5 feet off the line would be  cool.

A steep start or a stutter bump thrown in every now and then would keep teams on their toes in regard to set-up

Grates. Holeshot devices.  Mapping that isn’t consistent through the moto (changes after the first time bike hits 3rd or whatever they’re doing)
