I don't want to be taken wrong here. Malin's commentating, his insight and excitement was awesome. He is a great commentator.

I´d start a fund raiser to get him back! Malin could join him in the booth, just get Jack back

All day long he has been trying way too hard to prove the GP's are superior. We have great racing all day and he is fixated on us vs. them. Jeez.

I like how adamant he was that Cairoli was "faking" with Alessi in moto one.
malin didn't bother me, he's really a cool dude and knows his moto. what bothered me was the lack of excitement throughout the entire broadcast at all levels and aspects of the presentation

True. Particularly when the gate drops: Seeing 30 riders charging into the first turn is one of the greatest spectacles in any sport, so they should damn well get excited about it!

Its always like that unfortunately. Malin could definitely do with knocking back a few beers before he steps into the commentating booth. But then as an ex rider who has seen it all before, maybe he forgets that part of his job is to convey a sense of excitement.

'Specialist stuff'??? He's n the states as we speak, covering the World Superbike round at Salt Lake for Eurosport with Jamie Witham. They also do all of the BSB rounds too. He's moved UP from motocross, but it's still dear to his heart as he is forever pointing out the motocross backgrounds of many of the superbike riders.

He must've tried about 10x to bait DB into acknowledging Euro superiority. DB, as always, had the perfect response. But you could hear the tension in his voice the last couple of times.

Malin didn't really say anything that bothered me, it was the overall tone and lack of enthusiasm in the presentation of the race.

I mean, Tortelli has no business being there if he's going to whisper.

British and U.S. announcing styles are different is my take on it. It's like I picture the guy sitting there and in his jacket and tie, sipping tea and calling the motos.

I just finished watching all the motos over on the Vurbmoto website. That was some awesome racing. I thought that Malin and Bailey went together well, I think the problem was that Malin is used to being in the booth by himself and not having a color commentator with him. It seemed like there was some periods of silence where they were trying to figure out who was going to speak, and when they did, they would talk over each other.

By the way, does anyone remember the year that Malin put it to the world on his 125 at the MXDN? I want to say it was 1990 or something like that. All I know is I was a much younger man then.

526sBank: It was in 1994 at Roggenburg, Switzerland (Malin, Herring and Nicoll).

Correct.
Bob Moore became 125 World champ that year but was not selected for team USA.
The Chesterfield team decided to have Malin ride Moore's trick factory Yamaha.
He ruled the 125 class that day beating the worlds top 125 riders including Emig.

When I worked with Paul at the MXdN there was no sound check before we went on. I was talking as loud as Paul but the level that went out on TV was really quiet until Maler got a text from someone telling him that they couldn't hear me very well. He gesticulated and somebody twirled some knobs. There are a whole bunch of commentators in the TV truck, working in many languages. I guess they don't have enough back room staff to sort out the levels.

As somebody has said, Jack is the Daddy of commentators.

At the Paris Supercross one year: "The presentation featured all of the American riders being driven into the stadium in a huge stretched limo. This passed off without indicent apart from a slight breakage of wind by Robbie Reynard, which the other riders managed to ensure without lasting damage".

"Jimmy Button - who has the longest neck ever seen on a human being"

Live on TV at a Superbike race: "Colin had a hard on in practice earlier, and I bet he wished he had a hard on now ..."

Jack now does World Superbikes for Eurosport. He would do MX but they clash with WSB most of the time. He also does trials and Le Touquet etc.

Rob,

Is it last years MXdN's in Italy you mean? I can remember having trouble hearing the "guest" commentator and missing out who it was...

And yes, Sir Jack is among the best! Still have a lot of old GP & SX races on tape, where he's doing the commentating (even though I never have the time to sit and watch them).

But I was actually watching a tape with a couple of GP races from the 2001 season (when they ran the one moto format, all three classes, same track) and let me tell you, listening to Thorleif Hansen commentating was an adventure!

Combining his "caracter" (think Carla), his riding and testing experience (knowing alot of the GP-riders thru Öhlins) with a lot of Stockholm slang, you get quite a show just listening to him. Even my wife smiles everytime she hear him! Smile

Totally agree. Burnicle and Whitham are probably the best commentating double act around. Burnicle adds to the excitement of any race he commentates on. Hope he is doing the Belfast Supercross this year again at The Oddessy
