Keefer’s 2022 YZ250F Free Feeling Map

This is my first year with apps and tunable mapping and first 250 in two decades. I downloaded Keefer’s recommended map and have been using it all season.

I went racing and quickly realized my stock bike was not on pace. At multiple races, I have struggled to clear certain jumps that everyone else seemed to do with ease. Due to my lazy, low rev 450 habits and the fact it seemed to die off fast on the face, I accepted my fate on a slow luggable bike.
Last weekend, my friend looked at my map and pointed out that it maxes out at 10k. His went to 12k, as did the stock maps. He hooked me up with his setup.

Holy shit, what a different bike! Pulls and pulls and when I do shift, it’s not this slow ass lug.

What gives Keefer? Is there any reason someone would want 2000 less revs per minute?

Am I missing something here? I am green when it comes to maps.

Keefer’s Map

Friend’s Map

*just noticed ignition goes to 13k. Is that a problem if it’s different than injection?

In for answers I have been using the keefer map for the last 20 hours got me thinking lol. First yz250f I rode had the hard hitting map and I loved it finally got my own played with maps and settled on the keefer map but have got to where I think it’s slow compared to what I first rode wonder if the 10k has anything to do with it. I don’t believe you can adjust the rev limiter in the app tho so not sure what the 10k means

The stock maps go to 12k.

I was messing with it that day and I swear I was able to change if from 10k to 12k. Can’t seem to replicate it now.

Do not know if that actually changes the rev limiter.

Not sure what it is has me thinking tho. Google tells me stock limiter is 12,500. Wish I was able to ride everyday I’d like to try different maps now and see what I think

The Yamaha tuning app doesn't limit your engine RPM.

It adjusts the Fuel and Ignition timing at your choice of RPM and Throttle Percentage positions.

It is possible to make your bike run really bad if you want!

I don’t think those maps are all that different at 13k rpm and 100% throttle. In fact the Keefer map is +2 on timing compared to your other map. Fueling is exactly the same above 80% throttle from 10k to the rev limiter.

Mine is also set to 10 000, what do you use? 12 000? 12 500?

That's for Launch Control "LC"

I copied mine from keefers website and it goes to 12,000

I think unfortunately you made a mistake when copying it

Just checked and when I go to make a new map, the standard RPM to start with are all different.

Keefer 5000 7500 10000 12000

Creating a new map - 2000 5000 8000 10000

Definitely need to change them

Thought I simply downloaded and uploaded it. Maybe it was manual entry and I didn’t look at the x axis range.

When I make a new map, I can’t seem to change the rpm numbers at all, although I’m certain I was able to the other day.

Is the rpms in this map wrong then?

Anybody used something different?

I must be a terrible test rider. I tried both his passive aggressive and free feel 2.0. I cant tell a difference between either of those and the stock maps.

However, I bought the twin air power flow kit and drilled out the airbox cover. I was able to feel some difference there. Not necessarily more power, but i felt like it freed up the chassis a bit by having less engine braking and it feels like it pulls a little bit more on the top end. My first coupe of laps with it I was losing track of what gear i was in.

Thanks for posting this. I just realised that I had the default positions in as well.

To change the positions, hit the position button, click the values on the axis, then use the up and down arrows to adjust.

Gah thank you! Was questioning if I was having a live Mandela effect moment.

Just picked up a '25 YZ250F and I was hoping for a little more top end as I like my bikes to rev. Of course, I knew going in that the Yamaha is more of a low-to-mid machine but coming off a '24 FC250 (and '22 KX250 before that) it was like night and day!

So far I have  only ran the stock map that comes pre-loaded into the ECU (awful... no top end and a little dirty down low too - WTF) but I am wondering if anyone has tried this top end/rev map below that Keefer suggested (albeit for the '23 and previous models) and how it may compare with the Free Feeling map.

I am looking for the map with the most top and am ok with sacrificing some low to mid but if anyone has ANY maps/advice they find beneficial, please share. Thanks.

If you like to rev the bike you may try a 14 tooth front sprocket. It'll take that low end power and spread it out a little more, you won't actually rev the bike more but you'll be going faster at the same rpm. I did this on my 250f back in 2015ish and only ran a 14 tooth the rest of the time I had it.

Love Keefer and what he does. With that said, Filthy Phil was on pulp last week and called his map a clutch burn map. For whatever that’s worth.

I also did this to my 25 250f as well. Made 3rd and 4th pull a bit longer and made 2nd usable in tight corners.

Keefer's YZ250F maps aren't very good IMO. The Tokarski map really woke up my '24 250F though.

Well, dammit man…..I have a ‘23 and just realized I also incorrectly had the lower, default RPM’s on my Keefer map. Looking to hear from others in the same situation if they noticed a big improvement after bumping them up? I’m off the bike for a couple months.

I did that with a Yamaha suggested map and liked it more than their recommendation.

Thanks.

Looks very similar to the Keefer Response Map that I have. After trying just about every 250 map I could  find out there in my search for more top, I ended up settling on the stock "Hard Hitting" map.

On a side note - does anyone else's  '25 run a little dirty? I have roughly 15 hours on it now and occasionally it pops/backfires when I chop the throttle from wide open coming into a corner. I ride strictly MX (Vet A) and do run it pretty hard.

I've had a 24’ FC250, ’23 KX250 and a bunch of CRF250Rs ’22 -’19 and though I tend to let my bikes rev, I have never experienced this issue before.

I ran the correctly tuned Keefer Map but liked the exciting map on faster tracks and the hard hitting on shorter tracks better. The Air box and scooped air cover shroud were a very noticeable improvements.
