to a level no other rider has. Heres why:

He has the GQ looks
He is very well spoken
He is up there with the best in talent
He acts professionally
Hell, he already has huge sponsors like Target and NIKE on board.

I would not be surprised to see him become the biggest and richest ever. Just because we have never had such a marketable rider.

Jeremy took the sport to it's current level, with big salaries, sponsors, etc...
I think Dungey is the first guy that could become even bigger. And unlike some of the recent champs... This guy is humble.

I see what you're saying but I'm going to disagree. While he certainly does possess the qualities you mention, if he's to become bigger and richer than the likes of McGrath, Carmichael, Stewart or Reed I believe he needs to have some other quality that makes him stand out.

What I mean is that he's either got to be VERY good (if not the best i.e. RC), or excite people enough to want to watch him (i.e. JS) or bring something new to the sport (i.e. MC). I just don't see him having either the second or the third of those qualities, and he will have to prove himself with a lot more wins/titles to claim the first.

The only guy that had the ability to take this sport to another level is racing Rally cars.

I like Dungey so lets not forget that. With so many injuries this year, Reed, Stewart, Grant, Villipoto, to name a few. I feel he won because he outlasted the the rest of the competition.

He needs a personality and some charisma to blip on the main stream radar. Your description sounds more like MC than RD!

Dungey is vanilla ice cream.

Stanton won 7 titles, and no one remembers him for a reason.

I am in no way saying he will be as good as RC, or Jeremy in wins and Championships, I am just saying he is a sponsor magnet.

Why does Ryan need to be anything different than what he is?

He puts in the work, had success through each stage of his racing career, been brought up right by great parents, has a couple SX and an outdoor championship all at a relatively young age.

Now he's too plain, doesn't excite the fans enough with his podium speech, gotta beat the best out there, etc.etc.etc..

Take a look at the past 4 seasons. He's been either at, or near the top of each indoor and outdoor season. Each season someone says he got lucky. Kinda seems like the harder he works, the luckier he gets. Funny how that happens.

Good luck Ryan Dungey, it will be fun watching you excell and keep the doubters and haters in check.

I agree, whore.

The qualities you list may not stimulate every current MX fan, but he will cross over to the non initiated and definitley bring more into the fold.

..and yes he needs to get more comfortable in front of the mike, I mean he ain't nearly as bad as Broc Tickle, but to loosen up more like Canard would move him to the next level.

Go back and really read the posts. That's not what I see.

This guy is humble.
This appears to be his biggest downfall in a lot of peoples eyes.

youre correct, that is what a lot of people have a problem with, and to be fair it might be true. For some reason people love cocky athletes

I just think sponsors will line up for this kid. Let's face it, he's got the look. Look at Beckham in soccer, Brady in football. Brady is as Vanilla as Dungey, but he appeals to the masses.
Dungey just needs a really hot Super Model to boost him up there more! haha

Hell Carey hart sucked at Freestyle and MX, but as soon as he married PINK...BAM!

I call it good upbringing, and hard work ethic but that's just the "old man" coming out of me.

He quietly goes about stacking up championships, all the while people talk about why he isn't good enough, or just lucky...

Ryan has a high likeability factor that is like catnip for sponsors. Clean cut, no drama, and backs it all up with the best currency in the sport, CHAMPIONSHIPS. This energy drink craze will fizzle out soon some day when people realize their pouring poisen in their bodies at $4 a can. Hell the racers dont even drink that crap. The tattoed "edgy" hip racers/fmx'ers will have to get real jobs while riders like Dungy will be resting on a stack of #1 plates and bonus $

dont forget, he won the outdoor 250 championship,250 sx championship, top 09 de nations 450(rookie) winner and then won a 450 sx championship.....as a rookie.
lol,if you ask me, he is ahead of mcgrath ,given the same time frame between the two.
injuries could of gone his way in all 3 of those series as well as the de nations race.
so when does a spectator stop saying luck is on his side?
i bet the very first time he gets sidelined w/ an injury, this board will light up like flys on shit.

He is a sponsors dream.
No one likes cocky riders
No one likes boring riders
I think he has the right balance.
He shows emotion with out going over the top. He is humble.

If he wants to be in the same league as RC, JS or MC he has to bring something special to the table. with RC it was toughness and domination, MC was showtime Domination and JS had cockyness and wicked style and speed no one could match.

Maybe dungeys humbleness is the special thing he brings to the plate.

Dungey for outdoor 2010 450 title

I don't have a problem with Dungey or anything he has achieved. However the OP said he will take the sport to the next level.

He may well win as many championships as Carmichael (only a LOT more years of continued success will prove this), bring more speed and excitement than JS (arguable that if he hasn't done that already then he probably never will), or change the sport like MC (possible but nothing I've seen suggests this).

I'm sure he'll be successful, and his looks/values/personality are probably sponsorship favourites, but sport changing? I don't think so.

Ryan designed his boot with Nike, thats no small company. Can you imagine if they got into MX apparel, the money that would be raining down on that kid.

I know I am going to get blasted for this but X games opened the door for the sponsors like Target, Red Bull and corporate America.

Tommy Clowers was the first Red Bull MX Athlete I can remember (in America)
Nate Adams has been sponsored by Target for years

MX/SX got residual sponsorships from Freestyle MX and X games.

Blast away but it is true. X games is the most corporate event have ever been to.
