This YZ360 was the last version before Yamaha moved to the monoshock. (describing the bike in the link below)

Yamaha did offer both the MX and YZ models in '74 and '75. Two completely different bikes . I always found it odd that the '74 -'75 YZ 250 & 360 engines were based on the old DT/RT style cases (old tech), while the MX series had the newer style engines.

Seems like they would have done it the other way around, being that the YZ was supposed to be the cutting edge bike.

The last year they offered an MX / YZ choice was in '76 , and only in the 125 line up. I had a '76 YZ125 and the MX125C that year. Still have the MX125C, the last of the true twin shock MX Yamaha's.

The bike in the above picture is a '74 MX360. I used one of those engines in my Champion framed flat tracker. It was very seizure prone on a half mile. Never rode it without one hand over the clutch at all times in case it stuck.

That picture of the 76 MX 125 c reminded me that there were (3) models that particular year . Also included were the YZ 125 c and the YZ 125 X that was the C with the fork reservoirs on top, the 520 chain, and the larger carb.
The X was my first race bike. It was someone else's used racer but to me it was the ultimate race bike after all the trail riding with old stripped down enduros.
Also it had numbers on it and I used those numbers when I signed up for my first race and kept that number for my entire racing career.

Dennis, I had an X125 model as well. I believe they called it the 76 1/2 model, as the YZ125C actually came out in late summer of '75, well before the rest of the '76 C model line up. I don't know why, but the hot tip for the X 125 was to use the YZ100C pipe on it. It had such a bigger mid section than the 125X pipe.

Most of the guys I knew with a 125X had the 100 pipe on it. Eagles, baby!

I was a brand new Yamaha dealer when the 125X came out. I used it to steal a good mechanic, who was struggling to race a KX125, from the neighboring Kaw dealer. Worked out good for both of us!

We did not know about the 100 pipe trick.

I had to dig this thread up from the archives. Here's my MX125C I just finished.

Nice bike, Chayzed. My first racing buddy had one just like that in high school and I always liked the looks of it. It wasn't nearly as fast as my Elsinore, but it was way easier to ride.
