A friend of mine sent me some pictures of Monte at his first race in 17 years. This was at Sunshine MX in St. Petersburg , Florida back in October of '09. While it is not the same track , it is on the same property of the old National track where Monte had pounded out many a lap in his glory days as one of Florida's top pro's in the '70's .
The #83 on his bike was his National number for 1977, also. He was 3rd overall on the day. Thanks to Dave Brunelle , Monte's former mechanic from the '70's, for sending the pics.
MoFu, we'll never forget !!!

My Dad loved shooting Monte when he'd see him at a race
Probably have a few photos somewhere still
He was one of five " true " privateers to make the final that night.
Like you said , I was amazed at how Monte could hit McCoy's mountain at that speed
and whip it over the top at what seemed like 6" inches above the ground.
And how Martin would run around above the top of the berm after the first big jump.
Everybody else was down on the bottom around that pond but he was way up on top
and it it looked like he never let off the gas.
Great Memories indeed.
Im not sure i knew dave, might have met him as a kid at k and k cycles, but Monte, Steve and Buzz, i knew all of them, havent seen them in 25+ yrs lol but they all look older lol,
next time i go to St Pete,, ie Pinellas Park, im gonna try and look up Monte, and Buzzy as one of my old Friends, Joe Cartier, told me that Monte still lives in the same nieghbor hood.
Next time i talk to Joe, im going to ask about Karl Jordan, and Kippy Pierce, maybe he knows where they are.
Thank's For Taking Care Of This Photo Spread Of Mofu And All Of Us..Mofu Was The Best !! And To This Day He Still Has That McCoy Flair That We All Knew..Not To Mention A Heart Of Gold...And The Same Goes For Steve Martin, They Ride Together Regularly..Steve Is A Super Athlete As Well..They Still Have A lot Of Fun..But Can Put On A Big Show When They Want To..They Just Had A Vintage Race @ Sunshine! Monte Showed Up To Spectate And Was Treated Like The Celebrity . And Well Deserved......Thanks Again Neighbor...Dave
They used to call him Koala Bear. He had a ton of 8mm footage of the old Sunshine days, Monte, Kippy, Pinner, Buckingham, Joyner, Jordan, and all the rest.
I wish I knew where he was these days. Have not seen him in years. That footage would make some great old school viewing.
i would prob remember you! i worked at k&k. on us 19 in largo with Fred mardis,,moved to kips construction yard and then to ken smiths concrete plant in Hudson and that is were me and EC Birt were connected.. i knew Jim Haynes and all??? we really just had K& K for Kippy and Montes bikes..did little resale work..Tax Write off...GOOD OLE DAYS..

Look for Monte at the Carmichael Open race at Daytona. 35 years after his '76 500 Support class win.
Thanks again to Dave B. for keeping us up to date with 'ol MoFu !
Any additional help?
First, Monte McCoy raced on Sunday and finished eleventh in the Masters +45 class. Bench racers may recall McCoy as the last man ever to win a 500cc AMA Supercross, which happened to be the aforementioned '76 Dallas SX when he was a Suzuki support rider! After that race, the 500cc class was scrapped, only to be replaced in 1985 by the 125cc class (now Lites).
