How regularly are MX bikes stolen in the US?

I ask because unfortunately my bike was stolen last night, but mine is just one of hundreds that get stolen every week here in England. Thefts of off road bikes are so common nowadays its almost a case of 'when' not 'if' you'rs gets stolen - and the thieves are prepared to go to any length to get what they came for.

Whoever took mine broke through a chained 5bar gate, an exterior garage door with dead locks, a locked interior door and two bike locks. But I've heard of much worse.

Needless to say the thieves targetted my bike especially, so they'd either seen me wheeling it in to the garage or followed me home from a track one day. A lawnmower, golf clubs and two reasonably expensive push bikes were left - but they took my kit bag with two sets of gear, body armour and helmet etc...

Mine is a older four-stroke and insured, so I am safe.
Won't ever happen.

My friends Ktm EXC530 six days enduro bike was stolen a few days ago. I've started to keep my bike at my friends house because his garage is more secure. The best thing to do is keep your tools in your house and leave your wheels off or something like that.

Hope you catch the bastards jamma.

bike thefts are up because our pathetic failing criminal justice systems just dont seem to be putting the fear in the dirtbags. we are a little behind the UK in our coddeling of criminals but I am sure with our current direction we can catch up in a few years

My family in Holland say the same thing.. Everything gets stolen and they say it just gets worse every year. When I was there last year 3 bicycles, a scooter, and a car were stolen from friends and family while I was there for just a week. it was the second time that same car was stolen in a year. Later I heard that the car was used in an break in of a store. They used it to ram through a window.. Crazy stuff.

Glad I moved to the US 30 years ago. Maybe I have been lucky here but I just don't hear to much of that kind of stuff.. I know it happens here but not like what I hear from my European families and friends. It's really depressing to hear their stories..

Here in Venice CA, my buddy keeps his KTM in an open car port below his apartment with just a chain lock, right on a busy street.. I thought he was nuts, but its still there after 2 years.. and before that his Suzuki was parked there too without any problems.. And while walking my dogs, I see plenty of bikes barely locked up, in back yards, drive ways..

I keep my bikes in my garage, I used to chain them up but been too lazy the last few years..

Cheers matey. The ironic thing is that our old garage was knocked down and rebuilt last summer, its far more secure than what was there before, yet they still got in. They failed to crowbar one door open so went around the back and smashed their way through two other doors and sawed their way through two chain locks.

Thankfully I do have insurance, though its never nice to lose a bike that you're so happy with.

Its probably a good thing guns are illegal in the uk - there would be one hell of a homicide rate!

Do the opposite..make a fallout shelter to bait the thieves into, then locks them in.

What kind of area do you live in Jamma ?

We get lots of bikes and Auto's stolen here but mostly from drug addicts and the Mexican Cartel because we are close to the border.

Most of the time it's just the unsecured stuff there is enough people who don't lock stuff away they just look for the easy mark.

I keep my bike at my folks house which is in a little village out in the countryside (think The Shire in the Lord of the Rings) but it doesn't seem to matter where it is, bikes get stolen from anywhere - including race meetings!

MX bikes seem to attract thieves like flies on horse shit; they target them especially because they're not road registered, can usually be sold on quickly and they can get a good price price for them.

What makes it even more annoying is that I'd just had a top end rebuild so the bike was running sweet. Angry

Ha. When I lived in UK I kept my bike in the house. Never told anybody where it was, always kept really close tabs on all my gear too. I lived down by Portsmouth...

Every day stolen bikes on Adrenaline Trip forums, it's a frikkin' joke how much bike theft there is over there.

I know how you feel brother.

My bike was stolen last Wednesday morning. They broke into my garage whilst my wife and i were asleep up stairs. Cut the chain that was bolting it to a secure point in the floor, took my bike, 2 sets of riding gear, knee braces, neck brace, 2 cameras and a tool box.

They left my $2000 mountain bike which was just sitting right next to the rest of the stuff unchained.

Makes you feel sick huh - then you start wondering what you'd do to them if you'd caught them at it! Angry

I thought mine was pretty secure, but I'm certainly not going to take any chances next time. Im going the whole nine yards when it comes to security.

Somebody tries to come in my garage and take a bike and they are going out backwards with a .45 slug in their chest. I mean, if they threaten me and after I try all non-lethal methods of subduing them, of course.

Who are you insured by Gamma? One of the moto specific insurers you see advertised at races? Did you own the bike from new? What kind of coverage do you have? Be interesting to see how they pay out. Think we all fear for our bikes in the UK!

I am truly sorry to hear of your loss. Good luck with your insurance company.

my garage was very secure, EVERYTHING boarded up, windows and doors.bikes locked inside the garage with disc locks on the sprockets. Damm little Puerto Rican Cockroaches tried 9 times and finally got in. one bike was apart and they put it back together. One cockroach was caught riding it home but the other took off. i got one back. the fucker wouldn't tell where the other bike was. they released him to his parents and like 10hrs later he got caught stealing another bike somewhere else. what did he get???? like 90 days in juvenile detention. what would he have gotten if i caught him??? a cold drawer with a toe tag. No mercy for these scumbags!!!! luckily the bikes were insured!!
