Chase managed to keep it upright after falling and pass all the way to first but is there a rider out there who is notorious for starting up front and then throwing it away? There has been a few championship “meltdowns” but I don’t know about individual races. Bogle was always a good starter but got caught up in battles and/or crashed and faded. Larry Ward seemed to start up front but get shuffled back. There have been some heat race heroes or guys like Friese who start up front and then block pass his way towards the rear of the pack.
Chad Reed throwing a nac nac on last lap of his possible 1st supercross win on the #103 yz250f and wadding it up comes to mind
That's a good question. I'd bet there's no rider out there who is consistently good at starting and then lands out of the points. Sure, it's happened at one race or another, but to be "king" of something you have to do it a lot. Getting a holeshot is no accident. Usually riders who can do that are at least good enough to stay near the top half of the pack. Privateers who get lucky with a one-time holeshot but fade probably don't see the front very often.
EDIT: I bet the guy with the largest gap in the "holeshot to wins" statistic is Mike Alessi. That's only because he holeshot EVERYTHING and didn't win them all.
At this level…
Pushing it this hard…
When shit goes wrong, it goes REALLY wrong.
We have many examples of this from Saturday:
Jett’s downhill bobble-flip-crash.
Phil’s get-off.
Chase’s fall.
That never happened, but okay..

JL3 you might be thinking of GL8
I expected good things from Shane but he seemed to end up a lot lower down the list by checkers. There must be a stat person to see start vs final results. I was thinking Alessi too with his starts and how he didn’t win but i think there’s someone else who is a bigger “first to worst”.
Bradshaw.
What about people who arm pumped up? MC said he had trouble with that towards the end of his career.
Grant Langston crashed on the last lap of what would have been his first 250 SX if I remember correctly. Don't ever remember Chad doing anything like that.
AP ?
Cool story, bro.
What's with all the made up shit lately around here? Bad memories?
McGrath said his foot only slipped off the peg once and crashed doing the Nac Nac and then he made them sharp ever since.
Holy smokes my memory is smoked! Looked into it a little further and never happened...must of been a heat race or something
Must be back from Nam, if Reed crashed on a Nac Nac it would be the opening intro to the Bar to Bar film.
Either speak the truth of be burned at the stake. Sometimes both.
JS7 for sure.
It sure felt so…even once can make a lasting impression and gut wrenching memory feeling for him coming oh so close.
How about Hughes with the broken chain pushing his bike up the hill?.
Reynard had some disappointing rides and injuries taking RC deep into a championship.
Pit Row
Lusk had a lot of bad luck and Windham never won a premiere championship either.
That was actually for his first 125 win. Houston Astrodome.
He never came close to a win on the 250.
Yeah, that's what I meant. I was speaking in today's ccs lol.
Langston's crash was a lot less interesting than a nac-nac though. He tried a one-hander and missed the grip on the landing. Fumbled with it and finally crashed in the corner, handing the first ever main event win to Travis Preston on a Husky.
No stats in mind, but the first modern rider who came to mind for me was Roczen. Seems like he's had the most rides where he's crashed running up front of all of this generation's riders.
I remember RC going over the bars after doing a can can on the last lap at I think Millville in the 125 class .... but he was so far ahead he still won the moto .
Very good take. If we’re talking bad surprises and shit luck we could add forkner to that list but hopefully he bounces back like Roczen did.
What year?
Don't remember exactly. I want to say 98
For a while Stewart had a lot of crashes that was hard to watch so he preceded Roczen.
One year at Millville he lapped everyone
Yeah that was a strange day . Dry first moto then a slop fest in the second. I think lapping DV12 near the end sealed the deal
