It's a whole different approach riding those thumpers vs. the smokers, no doubt. Let's not fool ourselves, though...there are [u:aadcbjd5]some[/u:aadcbjd5] conditions where the 4-stroke is still a better machine.

Hmm. That's so far out of the range of other bikes, I'm not sure that there's not a typo in there somewhere.

The upcoming Dirt Bike mag shoot out has a similar result... the RM-Z450 is a porker although the riders say they don't feel it while riding. I think the RM-Z450 scored a second overall in the shoot out.

Someone teach those bikes the meaning of portion control, and work on some D&E. sheesh..

And, it is where they carry it, too. There's no way you can hide the weight of those cams, valves, and head, unless they go to a substantially different design. Maybe with the porkers, er, I mean 4-strokes, turning the engine around so the cylinder is where the airboxes are now would work better. It'd be tough, but, it might be a possibility. Hanging the carb/EFI and air ducting out the front would result in little inertial moments. In fact, you could probably make the thumper feel a lot more like a smoker in weight distribution, even without cutting the weight.

Presently, I think these bikes only feel light or carry their weight well when compared to each other. They're borderline street bikes.

I can't see this being accurate if the tank was full of gas. We just finished a lightweight CRF450 project bike and the dry weight ( all fluids, no gasoline) of the CRf450 was 228? The tank holds 1.9 gallons which would be close to 12lbs if full. That would make the CRF 240lbs with a full tank.

221 without gas but with all other fluids. I have a little heavier triple clamps and bars than stock, so that's a pound or three, but that's what I got. I used two bathroom scales, but I weighed some barbell weights with them before I weighed the bike, and they were within one pound.

thats 208 with ALL fluids but gasoline... KTM does use dry weight for their machines. if you removed all the fluids it maybe a sub 200 machine...

Maybe with enough gas for a three lap moto? I doubt even 1/2 tank. 1 gallon of gas weighs about 7 lb, so that'd make the Yamaha 223 to 224 with no gas. I doubt it. But, I'm stoked if the factories really have figured out how to make them that light.

And that was just the 125...

Does anyone know why the Zuke is so much heavier? EFI shouldn't make that much difference unless you had to add a battery (which I don't think the Zuke has).

CycleNews says the RMZ is a bitch to start. So much for fuel injection being the silver bullet to make thumpers easy to start! That is a major slam right there.
