Hey all,

Quick gearing question for a '23 GG MCF 350 I have 14/51 currently. Wanted to bump up to a 52 rear but the chain is too short and I am not sure if it would give me quite enough - almost feel like a 53 rear would be even more low-end grunt. Wondering about going with a 13 tooth front instead of a 116-120 link chain. Just not too sure if a 13/51 or 13/52 would be geared too low. I suspect it would be.

What would be the appropriate link length if I stuck with the 14/52?

Want  more low-end than the current 14/51.

Thanks

My bad. MCF so 5 speed. Corrected my original post.

I'd leave the 14front  and run the 50. That would stretch 1-3 and not bother 4-5th much.

Looking for more bottom. I figure the 350 has a lot of run per gear so feel I can easily sacrifice some top-end.

1 at the front is equal too 3.5 at the rear.

Reread it, I'd just try the 13 with the 51, It would be a cheap test.

Same bike. I went up 2 teeth on the rear, and bought the map switch. Anymore money or mods than that, I figure I should just get a 450.

It sounds like going down 1 is exactly what your looking for. I don't think you will miss the over-rev.

FYI 1 tooth at the front is a HUGE drastic change.

I had to add 1 at the front racing supermoto to get more MPH in top gear because I was tapped out way to soon.

I ran 14/52 on mine. The 14 in the front is better than 13 because it frees up tension on the swing arm and shock under load.

What chain length did you end up going with? 116 or 118?

Thanks

Changing sprocket sizes does not give engines more power.

Not sure if this is meant as a troll reply?

Of course it does not give the engine more power. Not sure anybody knowledgeable thinks that. But gearing definitely changes the power curve and where/how that power is delivered. We all know the 350 is a rev-monster and has oodles of power. And that changing the gearing can bring some of that power lower in the RPM range to make more usable under different conditions.

That is what I personally am going for. Tap into that power earlier in the RPM range.

It can also allow you to run in a higher gear and avoid a shift.

How did it run with 14/52? Can you lug it around in 3rd gear close to a 450?

I'm curious about chain length as well

Gearing changes the power curve??

I tried a 13 upfront.  Get ready to start in 3rd gear! I think it would be good in the woods at lower speeds.  I settled on 14/52, but I mostly ride track.

Good to know - thanks. I assume you had to go with a longer chain? Do you recall if you used a 116 or 118 link? For me with the 14/52, the chain adjuster is all the way in and I am still about 5-8mm less than called for static sag. Sitting on it will be way too tight.

Seeing how your still trolling I will bite. It changes the curve of how the power is delivered to the wheel.

'23 MC 350 here. I run 14/52 for every track. Need to add a link to the chain (118 I believe). I can run third just about everywhere except really tight turns and I can use fourth on really long, faster downhills. Make sure you re-adjust your sag after adding a longer chain as it moves the real wheel back a little bit. If you want to try a 13 tooth countershaft sprocket, I would use a 49 tooth rear.

KTM went to 14/52 on the new gen 350's. I haven't compared gear ratios between the two but I would bet they are the same or similar.

They guy is looking for a large change in low RPM performance. 1 tooth is next to nothing, a slight change.

A lot cheaper to buy a front and test it than to buy a chain and sprocket and not have it be enough. Of coarse I know 14/52 is the Kool-aid number that the clueless always regurgitate.

So, I'm a dope.  I just double checked my 23 Husky 350 and it came with 14/52.  I must have been confused by my 450 gearing. Has anyone tried a 53 rear?

14-53 here. I love that gearing. 2nd gear starts, click third and pretty much forget it. Once in a blue moon would I go down to 2nd or up to 4th.

Actually bro, I'm not clueless. The OP asked a question and I answered it based on my actual experience. Where did he say he is looking for a "large change in low RPM performance?" Do you have a 2023 MC 350? If you do, post up a pic...

On the prior gen 350 the fastest young guns that were riding them went to 13 drive sprocket.  I don't know about the latest iteration, but I also can't imagine why anyone would be riding a track and using first gear.  I went to I think 13/50 on mine (stock) and preferred it to do just what the op wanted, bring the power curve down.

HAH!

I guess I had RTFM I would noticed that the axle block on these bikes CAN be rotated 180 and the 52 tooth would work with the existing chain. I had noticed the marks on both sides of the blocks but never really gave it much thought.

I am inclined to still want to try a 53. I went ahead and ordered a 50 tooth rear and a 13 tooth front, so I can try a 13/50 option as well as the 14/52 and 14/53.

So that said, if you are in a similar situation you should be able to use the stock chain if you reverse the axle blocks. Obviously reset sag afterwards.

The irony of your post is breathtaking. Everybody seems extremely knowledgeable yourself excluded of course.
