Hello,
I apologize if this has been covered in a prior post.
I am building a 06' Honda CR250 McGrath replica, and I am trying to nail down the anodize for the forks.
Does anyone know what type of color or coating the Showa guys used on their 05-10 factory Honda upper forks?
I've called some well-known coating services, and no one knows how to match that look.
They're recommending a hard-clear light anodize to get it close, but it's not exactly the same look.
Who are the well know anodizers you've called? I need to get some triple clamps done.
Anodizing is a dye. So in order to have a gold color matched you would need a similar looking gold color you want as an example. They can tint the dye as needed to achieve the color you are looking for.
I had Alumicoat (sp?) do some fork outers for me. I basically sent an image along with my forks saying I wanted a finish similar to what Ohlins does.

They are not anodized.. They are Kashima coated... Ano is a cheap alternative and will fade... Looks ok for a while...

2006 Team Honda bikes did not use Kashima coating... that came later.
Seeing that image above it’s even easier to match that color.
Cerakote H series or the Elite if they have Bright Nickel in that.
Heres a set of Yamaha WR forks outers done in that color.
AHM Factory Services. The guys are AHM were super friendly.
AluminArt Anodizing is the other.
Were the inner surfaces of the work's forks molybdenum-coated?
Hard anodize clear will get you really close to this, so long as your fork tubes are the same alloy as the ones pictured. There's no dye on these.
I have the stock forks, which have that light gold anodize look.
Do you still agree a hard clear would work? You are like the 5th person who has recommended this...
Yes, most likely. Clear anodize comes out different colors depending on the alloy of the aluminum. It ranges from light gray to light gold. Usually you'll end up a very light gold as most fork uppers are 7000 series aluminum.
You just need to find an anodizer who can strip the old anodize off, then have them re-anodize (hard) Type III clear. Tell them to slow strip the tubes so they don't end up with a crap surface finish! This is where an experienced anodizer comes in handy.
Clear hard anodizing is what you're looking for and what the tubes and shock body were done in for the picture above. Depending on the alloy of the stock tubes, it can come out anywhere from silver to almost a very light sand color but that's what's going to give you the same look as those old factory Honda's.
Hey Luxon, just curious if you or N2D still offer Kyokote fork coatings? The Kyokote clear on the right looks like a really close match to that very light, satin champagne color.

We can do it if you're looking to do multiple sets of tubes. But if you want a one off set, N2D should be able to handle it for you. If you happen to want WP uppers, I have a couple sets already coated here.
