Here's some pics of my yz80 I'm currently restoring. I started racing in 1981 and thought my bike sucked since it had a metal tank...stupid kid.

Very sweet. I would have given my left nut to have a bike like that in 78. The one I had was bone stock and none of the cool lightning bolts either.

I still have an NOS Yamaha factory frame gussetting kit for that bike. They used to beat themselves to pieces without frame strengthening. That thing sure looks trick.

Gusset kit didn't work. My 78 YZ80 had thirteen breaks in the original frame which Yamaha warranted. They sent a gusset kit with the new frame which was heliarced in place. Six months later it was doing it again. Frame was made of peanut brittle I think! I had a Terry fork kit, air caps, fork boots, opaque fork skins, Mini Muder, DG tall seat kit and S&W Monoshock. Always wanted that swingarm, pipe and head but the bike always kept falling apart. And I never raced it, just rode at the sandpit and trails. I think all the frame problems were cured for 79 as well as it had a six speed tranny. Looked identical though. Sweet bike, wish I still had mine, cracked frame and all.

Bikes like that are why I got into this sport. It was bad ass.

I'd rather have that than a new 07 YZ 85.

Currently restoring? Damn, it looks like that bike has everything it needs.

Except a chain, of course....

I had a 1979 yz 80 when I was a kid it was the coolest looking bike I used to park it in the driveway on the kick stand in the crossed up position and stare at it for hours. mine had fox yellow bars and fox yellow grips and a dunlop rear tire I always wanted to trick it out with all the trick dg parts and a fox shock similer to Eric Kehoes I would make parts lists and add it all up and dream.
I just bought another 79 yz 80 and I am as excited as I was when I was young to pick it up. This time I hope to find a dg head a swing arm or build one and find a fox shock and I plan to ride it
