I wondered what that was, when he came by the first time. Glad they showed the replay, can anybody say umm...we gotta get a stronger buckle!

No independent research about it.

Just saying.

Didn't Dungey say he must not have gotten it properly snapped?

RC may not be "sold on the idea " of the Leatt brace but every time he buckles into his race truck he wears a HANS device which esentially is the automotive racing forerunner of the Leatt. He may not be sold on that either but NASCAR mandates the use of the HANS device because of what happened to Dale Earnhardt, Sr. It could be debated endlessly whether more safety devises like Leatt, Alpinestar, chest protectors, etc. should be required in professional MX/SX, but I think the GOAT could have used his status a little better and said something a little more positive about safety in general, such as, I'm not totally sold on the idea myself but anything to make the riders safer needs to be considered, instead of just throwing the Leatt under the bus. A lot of impressionable young riders were probably watching the telecast. By the way, I'm a fan of the GOAT.

HANS works in an ENTIRELY different manner than a Leatt

and there is a huge amount of independent testing of the HANS device by MANY racing organizations, so much so they outlawed the knock offs as being less effective.

And isn't it mandated by NASCAR in each of the 3 series that a HANS must be used EID?

Yes, a HANS must be worn in all NASCAR events
Also F1, IRL and more

and they've all done their own testing, not just taken the word of the manufacturer in regards to it's effectiveness

NASCAR also mandated "soft walls" following Dale Sr's crash

I've heard that those buckles on the Leatt break all the time.

yeah dude, during crashes. Dungey may have been honest about not buckling it properly. Human error is possible.

So who does the testing, is there any regulatory agency to do this? Or do you have to fork over a ton of cash to Carmichael for an endorsement.

I couldn't her what RC said because of the trash audio in the broadcast. I was really curious what he did say since he doesn't wear one.

Anyone care to post the cliff notes.

Sorry flarider, I stand corrected. But that was not exactly the main point I was trying to make... I think. And I know there were many more safety measures instituted after Sr's death than just neck restraints and soft walls, such as full coverage helmets, roll cage construction, crush panels, etc.,etc., etc. I didn't think anyone would seriously think I meant to say that the neck restraint dealio was the only safety issue NASCAR mandated after that particular incident.

RC did not say he was not sold on the idea. After reading this i just went back and watched it again. RC said "I never really liked it that much and he was not sold on the testing of it but it could be a very good thing.... I guess but ahhh.... it fell off"

The Leatt clasps are not idiot proof. If you are careless, it's pretty easy to close it without it locking it all the way into place. I've been wearing a Leatt for two years without braking any clasps, but I think that they really need to add some redundancy to the clasp design. Even though I haven't had a clasp pop open while riding, I have a couple of ideas to prevent the clasps from inadvertently popping open either due to crashing or carelessness, but I haven't tested them yet. Murphy's law says it will happen if it can happen.

I was just shocked to see how long it took any of the announcers to notice it. That thing was loose from lap 1, I couldnt believe how long he rode around with it dangling

i thought it was cool to hear RC's honest opinion on the Leatt instead of him just talking it up like everyone else. It was funny Ralph asking RC to explain it and he almost couldn't even come up with anything good to say about it, he said somethin like "it's supposed to reduce neck injuires for straight on impacts...I guess" but yeah said he doesn't use one and isn't sold on it.

Nothing against the GOAT, but smart and fast are usually mutually exclusive.

Every doctor I know, that's involved in the sport, thinks neck braces are a good idea.

Ryan told me that he thought he'd closed it properly, but obviously hadn't.
