Should Jett be Penalized?

He obviously gassed it off the track and raced back on cutting DF14 off.  Did he gain an advantage by cutting that corner while on the pipe to get back on the track?  Anderson was punted off the track and while in last place received a penalty for “gaining an advantage.”

I may get downvoted for this, i don't care but if he isn't penalized, I am going to be mad, yes he's the golden child but if you penalize anderson, you need to penalize jett too. He shouldn't get off the hook because of his statis in the sport if you will but I think they will give him a pass, which they shouldn't.

I started this to be sarcastic, and poke the bear so to speak.  Looks like it worked with the reactions on the few replies!  But gosh darn there’s a lot of votes in the pole. Kinda interesting.

I have a question for our esteemed professional moto journalist,  did Dan Fahie file a protest with AMA for that maneuver? Or did they just let it go? I think it would be interesting to hear from team Kawasaki on the matter.  I’m not entirely implying that our racing should turn into everything being protested like F1, I’m curious to know what the team principles opinions are.

As you whine in your ignorant post. Laughing

Don’t be so sensitive over your mans. There is nothing wrong w/ asking if the ama is going to hold Jett accountable & to the same standard that they do everybody else. After every race we see some kind of post asking if so & so should be penalized over a racing incident. People should be able to question Jett too without being shouted down or censored.

Go watch the race where jett bumped forkner off the track and forkner accelerated off the track.

Last year tomac Cross rutted a rhythm and gassed it between the tuff blocks.

Jett was barely off track for 1-2 seconds.

All three of those ^^ the riders entered at the closest safe point. Anderson skipped and entire section.

After getting bumped off the track, he got back on after going past a whopping 2 tuff blocks and lost 3 positions in the process. More people voting for “yes he should be penalized” is bonkers.

This situation is interesting.  While I think it's stupid to penalize him, doesn't the rule book state something about accelerating off track?  If it does, then they must follow the rulebook and penalize him if the AMA wants to be consistent and unbiased.

Unfortunately the rulebook doesn't say anything about the length of time off the track, or if it does correct me if I'm wrong?  So with that said, if the rulebook does indeed say something about accelerating off track then technically Jett should be penalized because he grabbed a handful of throttle and almost spun out as a result.  Had he not grabbed a handful of throttle a penalty would not be in question, and he would have filed in behind Ferrandis or worse.

Not that I necessarily agree with the penalty, but if you have a rulebook you need to follow it.

To me it looks like when he spun the bike like that, it was to prevent himself from crashing. You can see the front end is pushing once he’s off track and he’s about to go down/wash out.

The rules state you can’t accelerate in an unsafe manner and you must enter the track in the closest possible point from where you left without gaining a time or position advantage. So was his off track excursion faster than going through the section he was meant to? No, you can see that since it allowed 3 riders to pass him. Did he gain a position advantage while off track? Again, no he actually lost positions. I’m not sure what part of the rule would warrant a penalty based on what he did. And one final thing to consider when it comes to the official’s determining whether he gained an advantage or not would be he was pushed off course, that wasn’t a deliberate line he decided to take. (i.e. a short cut)

I agree this is a tough call but sometimes the rules make for what seem to be bad calls if they are enforced consistently.  In this case, Jett nearly came to a complete stop just before the monster tough block.  In your frame grab above he's already grabbed a handful and started accelerating.  Whether it was intentional or not or to prevent a tipover, Jett did accelerate off the track in an unsafe manner because he almost fell as a result.

As for gaining an advantage, had Jett rolled slowly from an almost dead stop he would have re-entered the track behind both Ferrandis and Barcia.  So the advantage gained from accelerating was not losing 2 more spots.

Another rulebook angle is that since he was near a dead stop, he could have turned and re-entered the sand just past the monster tuff block which means he would have lost more spots waiting for riders to pass (look how many spots #7 lost waiting for riders).

I think the only reason this is even a discussion is because Jett was nearly stopped, and then grabbed that handful.  Otherwise, you couldn't question it based on how the rule is written.

I don't think Jett intentionally did anything wrong.  It was his instinct to grab the throttle and get going again.  But he just grabbed way too much throttle based on the rule book.  I also don't think it would have affected Jett's finishing position as he would have passed them both, but if you are taking the emotion out of the picture and simply following the rulebook then a penalty is easily justified, as petty as it may seem.

The rule is about gaining an advantage in either time and/or track position. Not how many more positions he could’ve potentially lost by waiting around. Was it faster? No. Did he gain a position? No. Was the off track riding deliberate? No. Simple as that. It was a net loss of time and track position. Just because he didn’t re-enter the track in last place doesn’t mean he “gained an advantage.” That would be like saying pulling off track into the mechanics area, going a lap down because they’re fixing a busted wheel and then re-entering the track at the end of the mechanics area was gaining an advantage because he wouldn’t have been able to finish the race had they not done that and therefore should be penalized.

I’m not viewing this from an emotional angle at all, I have zero vested interest in how Jett or anybody finishes. A lot of your answers seem to be he went too fast  while off track based on your opinion not by the rule book.

Absolutely I am!  And it worked! Haha. Jett is such a sensitive subject for all our “toughest sport in the world” enthusiast I couldn’t help myself.

For all the Jett fanboys my question is absolutely absurd!

For all the Anderson fanboys my question is an absolute YES and something should be done.

For me, a fanboy of the sport, I’d like some real journalism done, and team managers to be asked. Other forms of racing a protest would have been made and the race directors would have been forced to make a decision. While this does sound mildly ridiculous, I think that an answer from the officials would set precedent for when the same thing happens in the future. So many times I feel AMA seems to make up or enforce rules as they go.

plus Jett has never told the AMA to “suck it” in an interview. So there’s that. Haha.

The only question you need to ask is did he accelerate?  If yes, then he gained an advantage by getting back in line quicker than he would have had he not accelerated.  How was it not faster if he accelerated??  If you read the rule you posted, Jett actions apply to 4 parts of the rule.

1. "without gaining a time advantage" - Yes he accelerated, clear as day
2. "from the closest possible point" - he didn't, he could have not accelerated and entered behind monster tuff block
3. "while off course, the rider must not accelerate in an unsafe manner" - He did, clear as day.  RC "he almost lost it!!"
4. "the rider may be determined to have gained an advantage without gaining a position" - He did, because he accelerated and as a result Jett lost 2 less positions than he would have if he did not accelerate.

I'm not the one making this up, nor did I write the rules.  Rules are hard to write to cover all situations.  But the above rule is black and white, 4 for 4, and in clear text straight from the rulebook.

It may seem petty, but the rules are the rules.  I'm out but if anyone wants to continue please quote the above 4 lines in the rule and tell us otherwise.

Seriously man.... do you not see the delusional whack-job posts?

People are trolling/targeting them and the fallout is hilarious.

I see people here getting far too wrapped up in a motorcycle race, and developing unhealthy obsessional dislike for riders.

And people who see far too much into people liking certain riders.

Hell, I like,

Jett, his brother,

Jason, Eli, Kenny, and pretty much every one of them who line up at the gate.

Personally, I'd really like to see Jason snag another title before he calls it a career.

I'd like to see Jett get a SX title on the tail of his 22-0 outdoor season.

Kenny, a title to seal his comeback legacy.

Webb, Tomac, I want them all to get the title.

They all work their asses off for it.

It's beyond vitarded the amount of people here who are borderline psychotic about certain riders, or the people who like them.

Life's to short to not fully enjoy the show.

No matter the outcome.

It's just a moto race.

There’s no rule saying a rider can’t accelerate while off track. Are the riders meant to push their bike back to the track if they end up going off? Again, all your points are arguing that he didn’t face a big enough disadvantage while off track, not that what happened was an overall advantage to either gaining time or position. If a rider goes off track which causes a slower lap time and he loses positions, that is not an advantage! You’re arguing that it wasn’t a big enough disadvantage. That’s not how the rule works or is written.

I did laugh at how you started off with “this is an interesting one” and ended up at the conclusion of that this is now a black and white, blatant penalty warranted move though.

"The only question you need to ask is did he accelerate?"

So your interpretation is, if someone came to a complete stop, they could never re-enter the course as that would require someone to accelerate to even move? Not so sure I'm buying into your line of thinking.

I said it was interesting because I don't agree with it but per the rules, you have to enforce if you are going to be consistent.  All rules don't always make for good calls 100% of the time, but you can argue with the rulebook not me, because I didn't write the rules.

And you are not quoting the rules like I said, you are putting your own personal emotion and bias into it.  Read it again and follow only the rules, and answer yes or no to each bullet point.  If you are writing anything other than the rules specifically then it's your opinion, and not the rules.

You are correct, if he came to a complete stop but he didn't.  And you are correct he would have to slowly accelerate to move forward if he did stop.  But that's not the issue here.  The issue is the handful of throttle he grabbed that almost put him on the ground.  There's no need for me to continue if people are ignoring the big roost from the handful he grabbed.

I'm not arguing with you guys, I'm just stating what the rulebook clearly says.

Okay, I’ll answer your bullet points. Look at the incident as a whole

Did he gain a time advantage? No. It caused him to have a slower lap time. Just because he could’ve lost MORE time doesn’t mean it’s suddenly a time advantage vs. staying on course.

Entering at the next possible point? I disagree that he could’ve entered before the monster block you’re talking about as he was rolling inbetween them after getting bumped and there was the large, long start straight tuff block inbetween that one and the one he entered in after.

Unsafe accelerating off track? Again to me it looks like the whole sliding out process was caused by being bumped off track and prevented himself from crashing. He never was stopped, it was all like a fluid motion that happened in 2 seconds.

The rider may be determined to have gained an advantage without gaining a position? It caused him to lose 3 positions and time - no advantage. That rule would be if somebody gained time by skipping a part of the track but didn’t make a pass in the process.

Look at the situation as a whole. It was a net negative. Because he was pushed off track, he lost both time and positions. That in itself is not an advantage. You keep arguing that it could’ve been worse so therefore he gained an advantage.

Did his actions while off track put him in a better position than before he left the track? If yes, then an advantage was gained. But he lost time and positions while he was off track, therefor no advantage was gained.
