So we should reset the bar every 5yrs or so?....You obviously have not been around the sport too long
I mentioned 3 specifically you just got red faced and forgot.
Competition is much different, culture is night and day different, and the equipment is not even comparable.
Dude, I'm pretty sure I remember MC was racing guys who were like working construction during the week give me break.
What can I say, I'm drawn to stupid threads for the entertainment.

anyhow, watch all these races and edumakate yourself.
by the way im only 35... and watched mc's domination in person.. you being 39 is no excuse unless you didn't start watching until you were like 20
tremendously low IQ take 🙄
Asks for opinions, shits on other's opinions. Bold strategy there cotton.
You? I'm shocked.
Guaranteed we can guess the OP's current favorite rider.
I literally addressed the competition in my first reply. Don't get mad at me just because you can't read. Either you were totally ignorant of the competition McGrath faced or you conveniently didn't mention it because you have a biased agenda.
The fuck does culture have to do with anything? And how would you know what the culture was like in the 90s? You're like 14 years old
And yea, the equipment back then was WORSE and less reliable which made it harder to be as dominant as MC was. Don't know how you think that's a legitimate reason to ignore what MC accomplished.
And you clearly don't remember anything about when MC was racing so idk why you're lying about that.
You can only beat who you line up against, you can't use that as a knock against him. He wasn't racing scrubs in Ricky, DV, Emig, etc. Were field as deep as they are now? No, but there were other factors that presented unique challenges in McGrath's era as others have mentioned such as bike setup and reliability, injury recovery, and so on. At the end of the day he's won more races than anybody.
Yes, Mike Larocco, MX Kied, Stanton, Ryno, Bradshaw, all well known slackers and never trained.
what a broke take.
You act like the current riders are experiencing negative impacts to their careers because their numbers don't stack up to McGrath's; as if they are being treated unfairly because McGrath has a record nobody's been able to crack yet.
Nobody is out there crying about their status in the sport because of the long shadow MC casts.
Count down to Dumbgeon!
If he wasn’t relevant today, then why do we see him on the science of supercross every week? Because 20+ years later people still recognize and respect what he has done in his career.
Without MC we wouldn’t have the Bakers factory. MC made RC raise his level to beat him, he wouldn’t have needed Aldon to be top 5 every week.
He's just another Jett nuthugger who wants an easier record to break
You're way too emotional. I think it's time to step away from the computer for a while. I'm sorry I hurt you.
edit: I hate the lawrences (from a fan standpoint) from head to toe too so miss me with that. Would be happy if they never won again.
I’m 39, no idea how old the OP is
Pit Row
All but maybe 2 or 3 replies in here is a gross caricature or exponentiation of what I said. What a waste. Put this bad boy in the dumbgeon asap.
Lol, I'm guessing "you're too emotional" is code for "I have no rebuttal left whatsoever". I deconstructed every point you tried to make so now you have nothing left to say.
Oh and you still haven't said how old you are or how long you've been watching Supercross. Wonder why?
Why, because the answers arent want you want?
This forum attracts some real gems
It's a decent question, though maybe poised weirdly, to define what the "modern era" is for supercross (and motocross) and what it isn't - and if the King's record is relevant.
I've heard "modern era" in the TV broadcasts but not sure if the Vital illuminati have defined what it is/isn't. I feel it was somewhere in the late 80's/early 90's the supercross tracks started to resemble what we have today, with defined whoop and rhythm sections.
If I look at the 1986 Anaheim supercross (RJ vs Bailey), that track had doubles and triples, but doesn't really resemble today's tracks so I think that is too far back.
Four strokes vs two strokes don't really define it; we had many years of crossover.
McGrath's record is relevant to me today for supercross, either way.
Good advice.... maybe you should adhere to it...
I don't get this type of posting...give an opinion and then talk down to and attack those that disagree....
chris clifford and shakybones provided some good information and perspective. That's what I was kind of looking for. the rest of it is just seething boomer energy.
Dude!
Do us a favor and turn off the desk cam!!
I don't need to be on an involuntary diet!
I’m a boomer?
Gee, it's almost like people don't appreciate a child trying to talk down to adults about a topic we have first-hand experience with.
Btw, I'm 30 so your "boomer" insults don't really work here. I'm not a boomer, I'm just informed. You're not. And that's the difference
People conflate accomplishments with progression, its happening in all sports. In the last 10-20 years professionalism has taken over formerly rag-tag new "extreme" sports that took off in the 90s and that has driven progression at a faster rate. The accomplishments of the former giants look quaint now, but they will be remembered as kings because they were game changers in their time.
Pastrana, Hawk, Dale, Sharma, White, etc.
Most of the guys that came later have greater technical ability because of a lifelong focus on the discipline but the soul just isn't there the same way.
Next you're gonna tell me Buc Nasty's 2000 record wouldn't even stack up to the playa haters of today.
