I thought it was time I started a build thread for my new build - I'll race this bike at the UK EVO Series next year. It's an Open CC 'Super Evo 1990-99) class that I raced on my 96 KX125 this year, losing the Championship lead at the last round to my mate on a KX500 (a track with lots of long, steep hills), so decided it was time for a 250.
I've actually been parts collecting for this for a few months in the background whilst I finished up the '98 John Dowd YZ125, so hopefully it will come together quite quickly. I'm hoping to have it done in January ready to start testing it in February before Round 1 in March.
The bike is a low-hour 1999 KX250 import from the USA. It's not the cleanest bike I've started a build with but it's all there: good frame, solid engine with good gearbox and no case damage, and importantly hasn't been messed around with.
I'm building the bike as a 01/02 spec Pro Circuit team bike, but doing my own spin on graphics so it should look a bit different to others.
Dont let my RM500 build put too much pressure on you lad. LOL.
Be nice to get a pic at the first round, its not far away all of a sudden, and i am registered this year so it all matters.
Not sure i will get my head round you not being on a 125, but hopefully its a close series again.
Haha i’m excited to see it! Yeah I had that realisation earlier, will be here before we know it. And no doubt Feb will be a washout so won’t get to ride until the week before Rd1…
Will be a change, hopefully good racing still.
First small project - my last Pro Circuit perch wasn’t actually great to race with in reality, as it didn’t do much to stop the adjuster getting grit in, and you can’t beat the Works Connection ones with bearings in the lever.
So I bought a new WC setup and anodised it as per Pro Circuit brown/silver/red colours. Got hold of a NOS rubber cover in the old style logo (as opposed to the white WC version) for a more sleek look. Titanium mount/pivot bolts are on the way.

NOS PC 97-01 Pull Rods and a new billet Linkage knuckle made by Phil Denton Engineering.
Full Docwob Titanium bolt kit.
We all know this will be a killer build. That perch looks absolutely amazing
I wish StevieD did more stuff i could actually buy, its top drawer stuff , but he is too into the Honda stuff.
I did get him to make me a billet Clutch Basket, i was prepared to buy 2 to just get 1 , but he did 5 and they all went.
Take loads of pics, even if you dont upload them till after , always nice to see hte bits you dont get to see.
That (dog) - knuckle do, mint!
Arguably the best generation of KX250. The handling of the previous with modern ergo's.
Yeah he's a busy man, but his work is second to none. I've just ordered up lots of custom KHI style Ti bolts too from him (KHI Linkage bolts/nuts, disc bolts, footpeg pins etc etc.
I've not actually ridden this era KX before only K series and M series. Keen to see how it rides in the new year!
Billet Envy hubs, HD Spokes and Black Excels.
Whoever ordered those SM rims on the lower shelf needs a beating from the Style Police.
I remember when the TLD team had the method wheels promo. And it just didn’t look good.
Ironically, i rode for the Alpina Wheels importer here in the UK, and we had those in Red/White, Red/Black and Black/Yellow, but never with puke green hubs LOL. We could sell every set we could get , and there were times when i ended up with the front and rear totally different colours, because we we short of a front or rear for a customer.
While MX is playing catch up with Ceracote, Supermoto is the home of bad anodising and paint decisions.
As we see with Chucks builds, sometimes it takes more work to make it look stock, those factory finishes are hard to replicate .
I am still on the fence with black rims on older bikes, even though i have a bike that came with them on, and i also have gold on gold wheels too, which is too much, but not enough to warrant changing them .
I did the last round of the evo series in the open class, considering getting an evo as I enjoyed it so much.
The track was so much fun.
It was , rode awesome both days, i crashed 3 times this year, which is a lot for me, and every one was that tight hairpin after the off camber straight.
Some great racing, 125 EVO and Super EVO were brilliant to watch.
Pit Row
Yeah Supermoto guys are the kings of hideous wheelsets! I’m good with black rims as long as they were part of that period (i.e 95 onwards ish when they started putting them on bikes)
Yeh all tracks are great! Good series to be a part of.
Arent they just, just because SM Pro say ' we can build any colour you want' , they take that as a challenge.
They do look crisp.
Performance upgrade - new CRF Front master cylinder setup from Honda plus Ti pivot bolt/nut. I put this on my 96 KX125 and love the feel.
Frame work all completed. I seam welded it, then fabbed/welded glide plate tabs and waterpump tabs. Berg carbon waterpump guard bolted up plus new Raptor titanium pegs/springs and Ti pins.
MX34s mounted up with Dunlop tubes and Motion Pro Lite rimlocks.
Project KHI Swingarm underway... Strength plates welded in, 1:1 replicas of the originals (as per Carmichael bike photo).
Swingarm is trick! It’s going to be a fun bike!
are you going to do anything to the engine?
Nice work
Sick.
Thanks, should be fun to ride!
I'm coming off a 125 so not doing anything to the engine yet as it'll be quick enough. Supposedly the 1999 was a solid motor, so I've got a new VForce3 and a full PC pipe that should be plenty!
