Win on Sunday sell on Monday. The purse could be $3. The AMA, Promoter and Manufactures don't care. Yet the promoters can not fork up the money to buy a television deal. Meanwhile we have Wrestling on three nights a week.

Did I mention that SX tickets are $80? $10 Dog and an $8 Beer. Of course I am just venting here.

How do they do the math to figure out the %. They are way off according to my calculations.
Example: The 20th place guy in the 125 class received $150.00 in 1991 and $320.00 in 2010 for an increase of $170.00 over nineteen years. Or a 46% increase.

$150 x 1.46 = $219

How has the Contingency changed?

Let's take an honest look at gettin' 12th, let's say....

Has that "Check" gotten a bit bigger?

Tix on-line for $29-$49 all day long. (SF)

Hell...Bud-Light in the BIg Cup was $9...Stella was $13 (A2) Although there was some free drinkin' goin' on @ the Knot.

Got Hooters-WIngs for the kids and it wasn't cheap, either; but, WORTH IT!

It ain't that bad compared to an NFL Game.

I think the increases in purses since 1991 have probably matched the increase of costs to put on a supercross. Feld puts a lot into the sport as well, sure they're making money but it could be worse.

I didn't do this to get everyone all pissed at Feld, it's simply an observation of times gone by. And I agree with ASH510, if you want to get pissed at someone maybe it should be the riders for not forming a association to make sure they get more.

What fascinates me is the economic widening gap between the rich and the poor, in America generally; and the widening gap between the rich and the poor on the starting line of any AMA Supercross main event.

In comparison, both both are blown completely out of proportion. Poverty in America could easily be wiped away, and privateers could have it much better off if this gap in both cases wasn't so wide. For example, several top professionals could sell just one of their many vehicles alone, and pay for the salary of a privateer for several years.

So over almost 20 years it has increased a ten fold, yes. But when actually broken down into specific details, is it worth looking at?

Lets say the average gas price was $1.10 in 1991, comparing to now which is lets say $2.75. That means it costs over twice as much to get to the event.

Okay, lets take into account another factor. How much did they have to pay to race and license fee? In 2010 it is 200 a round and about 250 for the license.( probably doubling what it was in 1991)

How much has the sport expanded since then? (one might argue, dramactically)

How much are the ticket prices compared to 91’, and also compare the actual sale quantity.

How many riders were there racing 1991?

Also everything was cheaper 20 years ago (cars, dirtbikes, gas,gear,etc..etc..), you are not getting paid the same as you were getting 20 years ago at the same job. As the cost of living goes up, salaries go up accordingly. (even minimum wages have to get raised to keep up with this logic.)

So with the expansion of Supercross over 20 years and the price of living going up, Is the purse only rising 7 thousand in the lites class practical?

There is no way to live off 320 dollars a week, when it cost 200 to even enter, not to mention to get there and also lodging and food. ( not even talking about during the week, or upkeep on practice bike, or getting a race bike)

Ive never seen anyone with actual career give there boss money just to show up.

Yes, taxes and etc take care of that with the government, but think about it this way; does the guy at McDonalds give the corporation his paycheck just to operate the register?

Or lets say Kurt Warner(AZ represent ahha), does he give the NFL his paycheck just to get sacked in front of the crowd, which paid to watch him in the first place?

Im not sitting here crying over the Internet, I was just stating as times change, everything has to adjust accordingly. This is not a stab at the AMA. They are putting together 16 round program indoors, that without them would most likely be extinct.

Have they put in more money into the program? Hell Yes!
Has the quality in the program changed, Hell Yes!!
When I crashed at Anaheim in the heat, I couldn’t move because of my dislocated hip, asterisk was there in an instant, and got me loaded up, up the shoot , in the ambulance in 5-10 minutes. The tracks are safer, the medic unit is more professional, The way the whole program is ran, is just all around better, thanks to ppl working there butts off.

Just like everyone in the world, we need money to grow on trees in our back yard hahaah.. (This is a Pointless post with no direction, just got out of school early haha)

Good post Rhett

and yes it's true, the investment doesn't make any sense for the risk , The rewards are a little out of reach for most but that's what feeds the monkey people paying to have a shot at the brass ring.

personally I'd like to see anyone who made the night show get $1,000 and anyone who makes the main get $5,000

Awesome post, and nice logic. I sure wish there was more of that going on around here. Who are you by the way? Was your crash in the heat this year???

It s pretty easy though for them to get a title sponsor to put up better purse money. I see small arenacrosses do it all the time. The problem is that they (feld ama etc) dont feel they need to. Its a joke. There needs to be a Pro Racers union. I thought that is what the AMA was supposed to do for the racers but???

I realize that NOONE is going to agree with this; but...

In 1991 a production bike was a far cry from a works/factory bike. Remember Honda's stuff?

But, in 2010, you could line up on a stock 450 with a revalve (& maybe springs) and qualify.

(This is where people that know a whole lot more than me start to Rant...)

I'm jus' sayin'...

ask Jimmy "Hoffa" Eickel about a riders union.. If i mention the Privateer Riders Association I expect guys with black suits and sun glasses to show up at my door.....maybe even a black helicopter or two.

Jimmy "HOFFA"Eickel had the right idea PRA would be the right idea weather
it is the Privateer Riders Association or Pro Riders Association.

I'm an actor and if I wasn't a member of the union, The Screen Actors Guild, I would basically be getting paid with a smile and a handshake...and maybe bus fare. SAG isn't close to being perfect, but without them there is no way I'd have medical insurance or a pension.

I'd love to see the backside of the sport become more professional so that these riders have more to show for their effort in the end. Why can't riders sell merchandise in the pits? I would think that things like that would help with the overall interest in the sport.

Define "worth" Stewart ,Reed, Short,Weimer,Carnard,Dungy etc etc are all making very good money and the guys like Nick Wey ,Byrne,Tedesco and others are making a nice living also. Now the guys at the back of the pack are not getting much and should get more for making the main but the super fast with the rare talent will always get the money in our sport.

They do have a title sponsor. The current one is some copy that sells drinks with little M's all over them.

The title and series sponsors never seem to make any type of increase for the riders though. The promoters just bet on the fact that the industry and manufacturers will bankroll these guys to be in the show. It's worked so far, but times they are a-changin.

worth is what ever you put on it. if you have
never tried to play at that level you just dont know.
a start would be for the racers to be able to sell their
image and or merchandise to suplement the income
that they do not get. if the big great AMA would let the
racers sell shirts hats posters stuff like that it would
help them out greatly. say if JT$ or Ryan Clark could
sell $300 a week in merchandise i know that is not
a whole lot but it would help out on entry fees.
I think feld needs to step up, and up the piss ant payout to
a respetable level and they know they are screwing
the racers which without feld would fail.

Thats chump change. Come on man, we arent talking replacing an injector pump here, we are talking about guys putting their life on the line.

This shit should be at least 5 grand to make the night show and 10 grand to make the main.

If they cant afford it, they need better people to get better sponsors. Theres 50,000 plus in alot of these deals, plus TV,

You'd never get a golfer to swing a club for what SX racers make,

Sorry, These riders selling they own stuff to make money is self promotion and MX Sports and Feld are 100% against that.

All I want this yr is for DC to put his money where his mouth is this yr and not charge the riders to race at the nationals. He mentioned 2 yrs ago that he was working on it and now that he is running the show there is nothing to work on. He is the guy holding the stick now and has no excuses to charge the riders to risk there health for his gain.

IMO when A rider guy gets a pro license they should get there release from being a whore to MX Sports and Feld and get paid to race instead of paying them to race. Thats what being a pro means in the real world.

Its bullshit if you ask me.

Maybe I should sign up with a fictious name. I'm already the most hated person on here from what I'm being told. Anyways, from my understanding, a couple of things here. First, from what I've been told, the clothing line has someone who is friends with someone internal at AMA and has been given the contract and wanted sole proprietor over that line. That goes way way back. Second, a union was getting formed back in the late 90's, but riders were warned. I remember that while being in the pits and everyone running around scared talking about being locked out of racing. Last, the slowest rider, figure a weekly pay check and divide that by 40 hours. What would they make at Mcd's and what do they make getting 20th? Plus that fact that they must drive thousands of miles and other things. Basically figure less than minimum wage. It was more of an issue when there were actual privateers, so I can relate to that part. But now most of the top 20 get some sort of pay check as well. Now, I can't say much about the last thing without being a hypocrit, because getting started with a series, pay will obviously be low. But I agree with most of you, as sponsors grow, there should be growth of payout.
But I regress. (edited for simple minded people, I regress, go back to the reason nothing gets done) Seems funny to me, that everyone complains over and over about this kind of stuff but does nothing. I know a couple inside the industry, who did something and now are outsiders. They had no other support, everyone says, just like they say to me. It's a good idea, but I don't want to lose my place in line. Precisely why I am going outside the industry to get funding. Inside, won't happen. No one is willing to stick their nose out.
