Holy crap. Yeah a valve definitely broke. Any damage to the head? Hopefully cylinder is okay. Installing new valves and another piston is no big deal.

That's a good idea, but deep down inside I want a 24. I hate the idea of a bike payment so I'm going to take my time and think it through.

The 24s are steep right now. Maybe some strong rebates come later on if you wait. I’m seeing the prices on the 24s vs some discounted new ktms and I’m like dang those kawis arent the deal they generally are.

A new 23 kx450 is still a killer bike for the price. Hard to beat with the rebates.

This dealer in Warsaw, IN is showing 2 23s in stock at this price.  Aaron is the sales manager there, and he’s a good guy.

Do you bounce off the rev limiter alot?

Maybe an opportunity to get a SR head

Drove from Detroit to NJ last week and saw Sandusky on the map, thought of you lol

It does see the rev limiter, and I'm sure the extra RPM from the Vortex doesn't help reliability. My local dealer can get me a decent deal on a Honda. I wonder if I'd be happy on a Honda.

How many hours?

Sandusky26 wrote:

78 hours, I put a OEM piston in at 50. I'll find out here soon what went wrong.

Geez.  I put 90 on mine before changing the piston and the old one looked fine when I pulled it out.  Eager to hear what happened.

Have a 22 that grenanded at 44 hours sad cause it is a great bike but will make it hard to buy another kawi when it’s time

Bummer. Wondering if the valve spring failed? I was told to always replace valve springs, valve seals, cam chain and piston all at the same time. Cheap insurance for me. I put 150hrs on my 19 with three top ends replaced and never had a problem.

Maybe you could find a used head somewhere, rebuild it and ride it until the end of next year then snag a leftover 24. I'm really sorry to see this hippy. I've been reading this thread for a few years now and it seems like the majority of people in here have had good luck with these bikes. Hate to see it brother

I've been looking and can't find any clean or cheap enough. If my cylinder is good I'm looking at 1800 in parts, and that's without replacing the clutch. I'm leaning towards parting it out.

The head new, complete from RMATV is $580

Fuck man, sorry to read about your ride.

Might be worth buying a complete engine like this https://mxlocker.com/product/2019-2023-kx-450-complete-engine-new-race-… to get you by for a little bit. I feel you could ride it for a season and still sell the engine for $3k+ when you're done. Then part out the rest of the bike and not be out too much money in the long run.

You'd be happy on a Honda, they're just different. They feel smaller, are a little less stable on rough/high speed stuff, but they have a much stronger engine than the Kawi. You could make it work for you, for sure.

Any other mods except the Vortex?  How many RPM does the Vortex gain?  I've thought about getting one, but your experience scares me a bit.

Damnit man, I've had thoughts about that engine. I'm afraid I'd have to run race gas with a built engine.

Thanks man. It's either spend about 3k on another engine, or use that money towards a down payment on a new one.

The Honda sounds enticing, but I'd have to start over on spare parts. I have a ton of Kawi parts.

Just an FMF with the short header and the Vortex tuned from Twisted. I think it gain around 500 RPM. I will say that I love the way it makes my bike run. No engine braking, super smooth throttle response, and it revs further.

It’s all fun and games ‘til you drop a valve.  Good luck on the rebuild and/or fresh bike.

You will loose the awesome KX frame when going to the Honda. Noticeably stiffer than the KX  Also, be prepared to adjust suspension for each track you ride. I can go from GH with few jumps to Pala main with big jumps and only change the forks 2 clicks stiffer and my KX is always great

That turns me off from the Honda, but Honda resale value is really good in my area. I'm leaning towards parting my bike and getting a 24 KX. I'll have a number on a KX by the end of the day.

I'm not sure, I asked in the 24 KX thread and no one replied. I hope it does, but I have a feeling the number on the KX is going to be super expensive.

I have a 22 450 with 69 hours on it, that Ill sell to you for $4500.  Most likely will even be going to County Line over new years and can deliver.

I've seen it on FB. I'm going to wait till after New Year's to make a decision. You're bike is way too nice for 4500, the  low resale value makes me switch brands. I do appreciate the offer and Ill pm you if I go that route.

Sounds good. My bank account agrees but I got a killer deal on SR so I decided to get that.  I have heard that 24 is a better handling bike compared to the 23 if that helps you.

The Vortex itself will work but will need to be re mapped. Depending on how old the box is too will depend on if the map switch will work.

Thank-you. I'm thinking it will also swap to a Honda?

I don't want to go red, but at 2000 cheaper than a KX it's hard not to.

The vortex will swap but just need re-mapped.  If you like the kawi chassis your not going to like the honda without some mods. The honda motor is great and the chassis is great once your in a rut but its twitchy and wonders getting into the rut.
