Next up! A 1998 YZ125 Factory replica build - John Dowd style!
Started this one a couple of months ago and hit the ground running. Already found some really cool period parts thanks to some people around the world (as usual!)
Building the bike for a friend I used to race with, who owned this bike from new (it was his first brand new bike), so it's pretty cool he still has it and decided to return it to it's former glory.
The plan:
Thanks Bryan for these really cool period parts that have been a great starting point.
OG Answer/Pro Taper Bars and Barpad, Scot MXII Grips and Pro Circuit Silencer with the Stinger tip.
The starting point: (By the way, it isn't a 2000, he just fitted a white airbox in 2000 to make it look newer, and gave me the original black one to put back on it).
On the hunt for a new or good used Front Master Cylinder cover if anyone can help please? Used on 96-00 YZs with the Akebono version (not Nissin)
98 supposedly had the best factory porting of that model run from 96-04. I built a 01 and used a 98 cylinder with Bills pipe and it was a ripper.
John was a favorite for me since we are both from Massachusetts.
The Shop
All new caliper and master cylinder rebuild kits, levers, custom Venhill hoses (CR routed front), SBS pads, zinc plated parts and Titanium.
Full Docwob Titanium bolt kit
Envy Factory colour hubs, Bulldog HD Spokes, silver Excel rims, Talon rimlocks, Dunlop MX34. Afam sprocket as used by the Team too.
Carb fully rebuilt with new seals and screws. Vapour blasted body, new OEM overflow hoses.
Damn Chuck!
DROOOOOOL
Dude! On board for this build.
Diggin the wheels
Didn't the 1998 have the small diameter rear rotor? Pretty sure the first production YZ400F (98) came with the older/smaller rotor and was updated in 1999.
Did the 2-strokes get the newer rear brake and hub in 1998, a year before the four stroke?
The black radiators and steel (round tubing) subframe are legit, as are the Akebono brakes . My brother had a 1996 and I had a 1998, both brand new.
I didn’t know Dowd ever did a heal clicker. I saw him race the 125 in 98. And hv vhs camcorder of John Berry working on his bike & starting it at a red Bud.
I’m not 100% sure but I think this has the same size rear rotor as the 1999 YZ125 I rebuilt a few years ago. 99 was first of the new rear hub though yeah.
Would love to see that footage you have!
The NOS Answer Pro Tapers with barpad arrived today from america with lots of other goodies (thanks Bryan and Steve!). OG PC Silencer with stinger tip, Scott MXII Grips and Acerbis hose guide.
I’ll be shortening the silencer to same length as the team used and replicating the secondary bracket that the Team used (welded onto the stinger tip itself). I’ve been kindly sent measurements and close up pics of an original that a friend has so I can copy it exactly.
Works connection glide plate. I’ve made a start today fabbing the brackets, that I’ll hopefully get welded up over the weekend ready for powdercoat.
Pit Row
The engine came is back from vapour blasting, the work in prepping them beforehand removing any scratches always pays off when they come back looking like new.
All cleaned out, threads cleared and ready to fit the full set of OEM Yamaha bearings in the morning. Crank has had a new ProX conrod fitted and is in the freezer ready for the build tomorrow. ProX gaskets and seals kit, lots of OEM circlips/hoses/general parts etc and full set of Docwob Titanium bolts.
NOS Ignition Cover and Carbon fibre case saver. I actually have a couple of spare case savers - they fit 1993-2004, message me if interested.
Lets go Davies, cant wait to see this junkyard dog Yamaha see the light!
Wicked build!
Thanks for the comments everyone! I had planned to build the engine today but forgot to order the shift drum bearing (forgot to check that page of the parts fiche!) so will have to wait until next Friday. I did manage to get all of the other bearings fitted though.
Also found some used billet Applied clamps and oversize bar mounts on ebay USA, so I spent some time today tidying up some small little scuffs here and there then polished them. I’ll take them all to the anodisers on Tuesday to have them clear anodised and should look brand new!
Swingarm complete. Zinc plated hardware, all new bearings/seals/chain slider/hose guides. A few small dents were welded and dressed back. Linkage arm casting lines removed to look a little more factory.
Engine done.
NOS Ignition cover.
I have a spare carbon case saver if anyone needs one? 93-04 fitment.
Bad ass so far man 🔥
This thing looks so damn clean I dont know that I would ever ride it
Thanks! The good thing with vapour blasting is it's not a porous finish, unlike other blasting methods like glass media. As long as you wash your bike after riding it and keep it well maintained, these surfaces will stay looking new for a long time to come.
Anyway, they're built for racing so they'll definitely be seeing dirt soon!
This is an amazing build man. I love bikes from that era of racing. Can't wait for more !!
