The one and only one thing i will agree on is the brakes...and thats probably becasuse it's NOT KTM brakes, its Brembo.

I also HATED the hydrolic clutch....

What didn't you like about the clutch? My only issue with it was that if I really abused it (I did a few enduro's and cross country events), then it would fade a little. I did bleed mine quite often as well. I preferred it to the hydraulic clutch I had on my TMs.

The only issues I had with the KTMs I owned were fork seals on my '98 250exc (on those big 50mm forks) and I broke two back wheels racing mx. Other than that, the KTMs were bulletproof.
The hydraulic clutch felt a little rubbery, and lacked "feel", even after bleeding them to make sure there was no air in it.
I found that the cable has a much more precise feel, when compared to the hydraulic set up. The cable set up also has the adjustability to dail in the way it feels, and you dont have that option with hydraulics.

I find it very hard to justify paying $8500 for a FREAKEN DIRT BIKE! Angry

I'm not rich and in these times need to watch where my $$ go. Actually I've always tried to be frugal in my toy spending. Maybe that's why I still roll in an old van pulling a 2-rail trailer.

Couple yrs back I bought a leftover 06 CRF450 and luv it. At my age (51) I don't want to go any faster.

Do yourself a favor and get an 08 CRF 450 and with the extra 3K saved do what you want!

-It was the only brand being sold at my local dealer, and they did a good job of brain washing me.

Good point - for me, this is pretty much the biggest reason why I will or won't buy a particular brand - looking after the dealer who looks after me (and fellow racers). The only reason I went Honda this year over Yamaha is the price - and I don't think the 010 YZ450F is $2000 better than the 010 CRF....actually I should re-phrase that.....I didn't think that any bike in the class is worth $2k more than another.....that said, I haven't ridden the 010 RMZ or YZF...

Less than $2000.00 like it sits. Bought it for $1000.00, tore it down and detailed everything as it went back together. New plastic, pipe, silencer, tires, chain, grips, clutch cable, seat cover, air filter, graphics, rebuilt the suspension and a few other misc. things. Had it all apart and everything looked great, low hour original and still runs fine. I'll do a top end after I put a bunch more hours on it, but it's plenty strong as it is.


If I had to go with a new 450, it would be the KTM. Good quality components, e-start and still lighter than than 1/8 ton porker that Yamaha put out. Someone had the KTM price up a while back and it was actually less than some of the Japanese offerings???

I love KTM's, but I was to be in your shoes now I'd probably buy the YZ simply because a good friend owns the local Yammie dealership and I'd push every dollar I could spend toward a new bike to him.

I guess the point is that all the bikes are pretty good; paying attention to which of the shops is a better dealership is a consideration. I would always trust Honda's, but probably wouldn't buy one from the dealer in our area (or should I say, used to be in our area).
