It was a magical mystery driving down Rt. 8 and pulling up to see the VANS, walking thru the gate, seeing the untouched track. It was really a unique experience seeing the first few riders tearing up long grass, getting caught everywhere on the bike. Hell, I remember when a concession stand was run by the Edmeston VFD... it was definitely a crazy place, once a year party for many. I still have my '80 programme somewhere with Jim Holley on the cover riding a Can Am and some KTM track ribbon after the last bike went by with the 84 gp. No way it is a Euro track now.

In addition to the concession stand the fire dept also had the BBQ chicken stand on the side of the road a few miles before the track. Stopping for a chicken quarter cooked over those coals was a huge highlight for us, and I can picture it and taste it like it was yesterday.

it was done for TV...to create a clearly marked course and because no other professional event had grass. I raced in the tall grass back in the 90's USGPs. Honestly it was pretty sketchy in early practices.

The Troy National "PRO" section was grass, but a totally different track type and soil.

If I remember right. LL was grass before practice started also. At one time.

Unadilla is now used for local races, it wasn't in the past. It was only ridden twice a year for the USGP & Trans-USA races so it had plenty of time to grow grass. Not to forgot the U.S. farming industry got shipped overseas or sold out to huge industrial farms. The Wards thus didn't have easy access to tons of cow crap. That was a big reason you had such perfect grass.

I remember riding the 500cc support class in 85 on the honda 500.  It was the first time I could pin it from corner to corner. That soft loam ate up the HP! My front forks were green from mowing down the grass in practice.  Those were the days of real MX...

Unadilla 1984 USGP was my first real pro race. I qualified on Saturday in the 500 class and when we hit the track it was all grass. By the end of practice, it was chewed up from banner to banner. That was my first big lesson, they don’t follow and make a one line track. I was happy to get top 20 both motos with a 18-19, but was bummed when a 15-DNF knocked me out of top 20 overall.
