Assuming this was the MJones dude or whatever it was?

I'm NOT defending it and I didn't see where it headed after I posted (not in relation to any of those posts).

The guy sounds to be in a bit of a weird or uncomfortable time in his life himself judging by other threads.

I'm not trying to pull the vet card, it's not an excuse or a free pass at all, but it's a safe bet anyone who has been a marine in recent years is a more familiar with death and sadly much more familiar with suicide being from the military community, so while his initial post asking if it was suicide may come across badly - and I completely understand why it would - I can see why it wouldn't seem out of order to ask from his point of view.

As for it snow balling and turning into a shitshow from there, no defence and no excuse but some folks will always get agitated at being or feeling like they're being censored, rightly or wrongly. No excuse for the threat now either but it's just gonna be frustration, he'll cool off.

Jeff was always a good dude on here and I'm sorry for Tony and the whole family and all you folks who actually knew him personally, it is a real shame 😔

ML - You're doing a good job across the board dude.

MJones - when you look back in on here, look after yourself man 👍

Dude is most likely full of shit and will forget he’s been banned by the time Arlington rolls around anyway. On a side note you’ve done a nice job around here so far in my opinion. Seems you know when to jump in when necessary and also when not to. Last guy was a bit heavy handed for my taste. Keep up the good work ML!

The dude threw his toys and most likely needed to blow off some steam, he is probably chilled by now and is wanting to make amends.

ML, you are doing a fine job around here which we all appreciate. Maybe consider unlocking the dude down the road. I have no idea what went down and but Life is to damn short for people to hold grudges over stupid shit.

I think everyone should take a step back and put down their pitch forks.  I understand forums have to be moderated and a select few need to get clipped for going way over the line occasionally, but that should be very very rare.  I'm not a fan of censoring as it's a very slippery slope.  Just because someone doesn't like what or how that user was asking in the Alessi thread doesn't mean he should be clipped permanently IMO. Like him or not, we should all have free speech, even if you disagree with him. Everyone pitch fork mobbed him for asking the cause of death, and this is a pattern here whenever there's a thread like this.  You might not like someone asking it, but the cause of death is always going to be something people want to know.  This is a public forum where nearly every single thread has some sort of disrespect in it.  There would be no Vital forums if everything was perfectly civil and classy.  It's the internet, i.e. a disrespectful place.

I'm sure most of you have received phone calls in your life from someone hysterically crying on the other end of the phone who just lost someone.  While in shock, what is the first thing you ask???  You ask what happened.  So just because most feel it's not the time or place doesn't mean someone isn't going to pose the question about the cause of death.

As for being "disrespectful", most of us get that and I understand it's a fine line to walk when moderating a sensitive topic like this.  But censoring can cause a bit of hypocrisy.  Why was it okay to leave a 60+ page Lazergate thread from 2013 active for 10 years that was nothing but 60 pages of bashing Jeff for the laser incident?  That thread had photos of Jeff during the incident when DC was taking the laser from him, and the bashing went on for 60 pages and many years. Was that disrespectful too?  That thread was just recently resurrected with even more shit talking.  It was active up until this morning and was only removed after the news broke of Jeff passing. If Jeff hadn't passed, that thread would still be active.  So why was it okay to host a disrespectful 10yr old thread about Jeff yesterday, but it was not okay for someone to ask a disrespectful question today?  Two wrongs don't make a right, but this is why censoring is a slippery slope that be avoided at all costs.  IMO, most everything should be left up for free speech unless it's absolutely way way over the line.  I think ML actually does a great job at this compared to his predecessors.

I don't know the posters history so all I saw was the thread this morning when he asked "the question" that resulted in bickering with other members. Based on the responses it sounds like there's more to the story that I missed.  It sucks you received a threat ML, but unfortunately that comes with the territory.  Be safe out there.

It wasn't the initial question. It was doubling down, with bravado, mucking up a thread for a guy who just passed. If he was so curious he could have jumped on FB or Instagram and asked there. It was all over social media, comments asking and speculating. It was gross. I'm glad at least Vital kept it respectful. I agree with a couple others, I was waiting for something like this with him. If you've been around here long enough you get a vibe from a new poster.

What a dipshit.  I didn't think it was that bad, but then he kept going and wouldn’t shut up.  There’s a time and place for everything, it’s a RIP thread.  I agree with the move.

If anyone has recently visited the Jeff Alessi thread, you may have seen a user who caused a bit of stir. Said user had his account banned form the forum and then I received this message via YouTube...

"It'd be in your best interest to not attend Arlington SX Michael"

Would anyone else like my job? Oh, the glory of it all...

I don’t want your job, but I’d be happy to attend Arlington with you!!

If you were on the opposite side of me, no one would even be able to see you!

lay low and take care - I'm not sure that fella's elevator was going to the top floor. Honestly not sure he get's what's going on or what he was saying.

I gave your post a thumbs up because in most part I agree, but there were mod pleas put out to ease up in Jeff's RIP thread...and then the fella in question came out wanting to box on when it wasn't needed.

Also...and I mean this with all due respect because I get where you are coming from in regards to censorship, but IMO there is a difference with censorship in general, compared to re-actively having to clip forum replies on a message board on the fly...especially in an emotional thread like Jeff's passing. Sad

Agree. He had MULTIPLE opportunities to back down and say, "my bad". But he didn't. He dug his heals in and got belligerent in a thread in which it was totally inappropriate. I could give him a pass for that, but the fact that he threatened ML has erased any leniency he could have been afforded.

You do a great job, Michael. Things on the internet have freaking changed, and not for the good at all. In my past experience as a moderator on another, long-gone MX/SX online forum...the worst I ever got was some entitled members calling me a prick or a giant asshole...but I never got death threats! Wow! Keep your head on straight, bro. There are a ton more for you here than there are against you!
