TOTAL KNEE REPLACEMENT QUESTION

Hey everyone, I’m gonna be having a total knee replacement surgery tomorrow!

it’s been long overdue, and my question is and honestly a concern about riding mx. again, which I’ve seen on other replies that the response to getting back riding and it being ok has been pretty positive!
but my question to whosoever has had any total knee replacements done and have crashed on the artificial knee and has caused any damage, I know crashes happen in our sport, and obviously we don’t want to but it happens.

I was just wondering if anybody has had any hard falls and has had any damage or has it been ok!

thanks

Good luck.  I'm waiting another 5 years to get mine done.

I’m pretty sure MC has an artificial knee.

Ive had both hips done but fortunately not a knee. Good luck and keep your icing and pain meds around the clock and on schedule. I’ve also had a parent stay with me thru both knee replacements. All of those stretches, doctors orders, and therapy are for good reason. The best thing you can do is follow that like your moto future depends on it.

Ask the doc before surgery, what's the probability 1 leg will be longer than the other after surgery. It's happened to many people I know.

Do you know if your surgeon is planning on giving you a cruciate retaining(CR) or posterior stabilized (PS) femoral component?

If you are going to ride Moto after a TKA, I'd ask your surgeon for a cruciate retaining femoral component so long as your PCL is intact -- this way your femur can still be treated with a retrograde intramedullary device in the case of a periprosthetic distal femur or femoral shaft fracture. Being able to treat with a rod simplifies things in a lot of cases.

If you are having surgery tomorrow, it might be a bit late for that conversation, as implants are likely already in house in the hospital for you, and most joints surgeons stick to either a CR or PS knee based on their preferences.

Riding after a TKA likely poses a higher chance of future implant loosening, periprosthetic fracture, need for future revision surgery, based on my anecdotal experience. Wear excellent knee protection. No wounds except your surgical scar is your goal for the future.

Had mine done five years ago, I swapped out landed on my knee, no damage. Not to say it won't happen in the future. Both legs the same length. Good luck and be diligent with the rehab.

I have had both knees replaced (2019 and 2021).  I was too the point I would walk down stairs one at a time.  If an elevator was available, I used it.  Walking inclines hurt.  I dreaded kickstarting my bike.  My riding time diminished for about 5 years.  In 2022 I bought a new bike with a working magic button.  I am glad I did both surgeries.  On my left knee they had to remove some screws to get the implant in.  I have fallen on my new knees a few times.  Some type of knees protection is a must.  I just wear knee pads, no braces.  I ride a couple times a month now and love it.  Good luck on your recovery.  BTW - day 3 post surgery was the worst...

I had a left hip done 7 years ago and will need a left knee soon. I blame skateboarding.

My surgeon said the knee is the worst joint in terms of pain to replace but, if you are in constant pain like I was with my hip or the gentlemen above with his one-step-at-a-time knees the surgery will be a welcome relief.

That said the surgery definitely changed my riding style, my first race back I went down in the first turn (my fault) and it became my last race as well, I have pretty much stopped riding and bought a boat & an RZR. Too worried about dislocating the joint. Pussy, I know.

Yep and nope. I had my first fall the second time I ride after TKR. The second was a year later. The impact falling the second time kind of scared me since I went down straight on it. I got up  called it a day. I was a little achy but realized it was no different than if I fell on the other knee.  The best way to protect your new knee is to never skip leg day. That is also the best way to protect healthy knees. I don't know if you have you PT facility already figured out but you need to get with a PT outfit that is a sports rehab outfit. The regular standard for TKR is to just get flexibility to 120 degrees and full extension. The problem is you probably favored the leg and lost a lot of strength. When you get a TKR all the connective ligaments are stretched out adding to the issue. Physical therapy can get your flex/extend back but you will need a lot of strengthening exercises. A sports PT will understand that. Do exactly what your PT tells you. Don't do more. They should bring you along safely.

Good luck

Meh, it happened to me, it's not an issue. It's not like you will end up going in circles. It might be an 1/8". I wore an extra insole in my right shoe for short while and then just let it go.
