This is a mind game.

Charlotte playoff points race was all about just being consistent and staying in the hunt. Dont throw away the whole thing in the 1st race with just regular points.

Next weeks double points there is going to be tighter racing when they can start distancing the other riders in points.

Last round in Cal will be triple and best to maximize points.

I don’t see how double, triple points matter every one will be earning them so only affective if your competition dnf’s or dns

Winning the 3rd race is like winning 3 separate races for points.

But 2nd, 3rd, 4th and so on all get equivalent triple points for positions placed. OR is it only the winner that gets the double triple points ?

The points gap grows between each position as the points double and triple. For example, the point difference between 1st and 2nd normally is 3 points. (25 vs. 22) With double points now the difference between the 1st and 2nd is 6 points. (50 vs. 44) And finally when the points are tripled the difference is 9 points. (75 vs. 66)

A real life scenario could be P2 is 14 points behind P1 going into the final round. Normally scoring that many points on your championship contender would be highly unlikely but with the elevated points structure, if P2 wins and P1 gets 3rd, P2 wins the championship. (75 vs. 60 meaning 15 points gained) If the point structure was the same, P2 would need to win and P1 would need to finish 12th for P2 to win the championship. (25 vs. 10)

The elevated points gaps is a way to put incentive on the points leader and title contenders to not roll around in 8th place just to secure the title. Hopefully it creates some good battles at each round. The top 5 in the 250 class are separated by 7 points and the top 5 in the 450 classes are separated by 14 points (2nd thru 5th only separated by 2 points!) after round 1. Shaping up to have a lot of possible contenders barring one rider dominating the next 4 races!

Similar to a 7-round series. 1st race points already awarded. Today's round was 'like' a second round. Next is 'like' round 3+4, combined into 1. Finally the last round is'like' rounds 5, 6, and 7, but again one race making those triple points.

I think a perfect example right now is the 250 class.

Standings:

1. Shimoda, 42 points

1. Deegan, 42

3. Lawrence, 39

If round 2 points were normal, and Lawrence wins round 2 with Shimoda or Deegan finishing in 2nd, then Lawrence would be tied for the lead.  But with double points, if Lawrence wins, he will have at least a 3 point lead in the standings.

It would have been more of a real "playoff" if they woulda did triple points at round one, double at round two and single at round three.

This would have kinda eliminated folks from contention, like a playoff.....

The points system is designed to keep this younger generation stimulated and focused. Now that kids have all the games that deliver constant stimulation it is hard for a regular race and series to keep these kids attention for a complete race let alone a series.

That would be terrible.  Sexton would have virtually clinched the championship in round 1.

Standings would be:

1. Sexton, 100

2. Roczen, 80

3. Ferrandis, 77

4. Lawrence, 74

5. Plessinger, 70

I believe the point is to NOT eliminate riders from contention before the last round. MX/SX isn’t a stick and ball sports thing where you purposefully eliminate contenders until the final two go head to head for the championship.  More racers that have a chance at the title in the final round, makes for more excitement.

If its points per moto and Sexton started with 25, shouldn't he now have 75 points?
