i sometimes think people would rather pay $2X a year for themselves to get coverage, rather than $X a year so that everyone could get covered

interesting way of looking at things i guess

well when you can make a night show at supercross or at the nationals you should be able to make a good living. Regis knows how much we make in mains it is penny compaired to what the profit is... Its sad to say that a pro rider doesn't make shit unless he is paid by companys.I would still be racing if supercross paid enough to cover bikes parts and travel. But shit I guess they had to pay MC just to show up, dont get me wrong I am not talking bad about him. But to have to pay to race supercross is a Joke..When the promoters are only giving the riders less then 5% of what they make a race is b.s. we are not at the local level here these guys should make good money...They sell more seats then football,baseball,soccer,hockey.... I rode for most my carear without INS but It was either let my dreams fade or take a chance, well I wouldn't change what I did for anything....Just ask Ping,Regis, hell even Jeremy will tell you what is paid to win a main is just pennys compaired to other sports...The amount of time it takes and the money it cost toward the reward is a joke. WE RIDE BECAUSE WE LOVE IT OR DID.....

I agree SXers are underpaid unless they have the big sponsorships but

Huh? Maybe you should check out one of those venues. Baseball stadiums have 91 games per year and football has 8. I can promise you the lowest market team in the US will put way more asses in the seats for those venues than 1 SX that comes thru town.

So I guess bvm111 and yahama4life are retarded... of course you have the "best doctors" you have 308 million fucking people to choose from, you're comparing it to places like Canada who are only 33.3 million, England 61 million and Australia 21.3 million. Why not compare cost/versus average care given, I think you'll find that there are a lot more malpractice lawsuits in the USA than any other country. Sure you have the best specialists and specialty clinics than any other country but it's only because you're the most populated country of the modern world. Plus the average life expectancy is lower so you need the best doctors to keep you alive...

So technically speaking, for every 1 doctor in Canada there are 9 in the USA.
1 in Australia = 14.6 in the USA
1 in England = 5 in the USA

Your comparisons are bullshit and you know it, you just won't admit that there are other countries that have a better over all health care system, I'm not saying that Canada is the best but at least we don't discriminate against the less fortunate.

For all you citizens of socialist countries that are under the illusion that your socialized healthcare is "free", I've got some waterfront property down the street from me for sale.

For those of you that think this healthcare bill is going to be a good thing for our country, all I can say is you're clueless. This bullshit isn't about healthcare AT ALL. It's about a power grab by the democrats.

And I'm pretty certain I know as much,or more, about healthcare and the health insurance business as anyone on this board.

Doc, you seem like a real cool dude, probably get along with you really good, except when politics, etc. come up.

Pretty sure you said straight up, a couple years back now, that you thought Palin would make a good president...

Love to hear your insights and ideas on healthcare, just wish you'd leave your political agenda at the door.

There is a pretty uniquely American trait where Americans pat someone on the back who is able to work the system and make as much money as possible for doing as little as possible.

When I was in England a couple years ago, there was an American who was living there who had done some shady (but apparently not illegal) stuff to make a quick million bucks. He basically borrowed shares of a company from a bunch of different sources, then sold them, and when other shareholders saw the sell-off, they thought something was wrong and they sold as well, so stock prices tumbled, and then he turned around and bought all of the stocks that he originally sold at a much lower rate. He made a quick million pounds in a day or two, and then returned the borrowed stocks to their rightful owners.

In America, he would've been called a financial genius.

In England, he was on the cover of every newspaper around and was considered to be a personification of all that was wrong with their system. His name is mud there now.

Seem's like there is a serious insurance problem with people who ride dirt bikes. Question for any of you MX Mom and Dad's - how could you justify sending your kid out on the track knowing he doesn't have sufficient disability insurance and/or sufficient medial insurance?

Is it irresponsible to take such HUGE LIFE CHANGING risks knowing your not properly insured?

Flat-Screen 60" T.V.'s...
Pick-up-trucks with "DUB's" and an A/V system...
Twenty pairs of the latest/coolest shoes...
Custom painted Helmet...
The Latest riding gear...
R.C. Car collection...
$2K Lap-Top...
The latest Cell-Phone...
$50 Flat-Billed Hat
$100 Glasses...

And yet...

Sooooooooo many of these very "Designer-Moto" folks DON'T HAVE the smarts to BUY Good Insurance?

How many people do we ALL know that have a crazy-assed car payment; yet, they Bitch about their Health Insurance?

And now...we've got the Gov't getting involved.

It'd be interesting to see the details of this to understand the "borrowing" and "selling" structure, because what you're describing essentially is short-selling, which is pretty conventional in public trading and arguably beneficial to markets because short-sellers generally have done research to determine that a company is overvalued. They can and often are a barometer that something is wrong with the company's fundamentals. It's basically a bet that the shares will drop in value and be available to purchase to fill the short in the future. And, of course, it's a bet that can be lost (as popularized in Casino Royale).

It'd have to be a pretty small company for an individual (as opposed to an institution) to be able to manipulate prices by acquiring enough shares to sway the market by ramping up trading volume.

All of which is far afield from health insurance, which people appear to want to define by their favored dogma rather than reason. Health care is linked to insurance, which has become linked to employment, which is the ad hoc result of market forces at work when millions of men went to war in the 40's. It isn't necessarily natural or effective in the current setting even if it was then.

I have a tremendous amount of respect for the Doc no matter how much we may differ on particulars. As long as the ability to buy into health care insurance is tied to employment -- in other words, and employer leverages its employees as a risk pool to cover everyone in it -- individuals are at risk if they are downsized or the business fails at no fault of their own, or even if they wish to become entrepreneurs and innovate, which has been the life blood of American economic prosperity. People stay in jobs and geographical areas not because they are happy or it's the best use of their talents and intelligence, but because they have a benefit plan not available to them as an individual. And even then the options are limited by what the employer can afford or obtain. An HSA with an catastrophic plan is a nice idea, but isn't always available. And plan with responsible co-pays to force the consumer to be smart about what he does or not pursue is a nice idea, but isn't always available.

Absolutely, there's nothing for free. The current system isn't and the future options won't be. The only truly certain thing beyond that is that the current system costs more to provide less across the board that other systems and is economically destructive.

Decent article to think over for people who are inclined to read, be informed, or -heaven forbid - test their biases.

Testing, Testing

yea, i guess so.... also reminds me of this psychology question...

would you rather:
a. win $50,000
b. win $100,000 but everyone else in your neighbourhood win $200,000

even though you'd be richer by choosing b. some people would still choose a. because it meant they'd be richer than their neighbours

anyway, i know which health care system i prefer... and should i want to 'upgrade' i still have the option of going private as well

I can't fathom the idea of being bound to a job because of fear of losing my health care coverage. It sounds like some form of extortion with your (and your family's) well being tied directly to your employment/employer.

It may not be a gun to the head per se, but sub-consciously is has to have a similar effect.

As a PM for a large A&E firm I have had discussions with upper managers on this very matter. Upper management always loves an employee that has a wife and kids. They know that fear of losing benefits for his family trump any aspirations that the employee may have for taking a risk and spreading his wings. It is a form of psychological indentured servitude that is prevalent in the US. It goes back to another conversation with a principal that said it just takes a little cheese to keep the mice happy.

From how the US system has been described in this thread it seems that many (most?) people live with the ongoing spectre that their health insurance is never adequate or secure - whether it's because your insurance is tied to your employment, or that you are never sure if you have enough, or your insurer may not pay, or worse you require long term medical treatment which eventually becomes unavailable.

That level of uncertainty or insecurity about the ability to obtain health care must have far reaching effects on society. Coming from a country in which basic good quality health care is a right, that flaw is the hardest one to comprehend.

Perhaps that explains the vehemence of the arguments - both here and in the public debates.

They shouldn't.... that's not the point is it? We are already paying for uninsured people that visit ER's everyday. The point (originally, before the politicians destroyed it) was to get uninsured people covered, and get the costs down, right?

How about hard working folks that have lost long term employment and now their insurance along with it?

Why do we have these monthly (weekly?) threads about "donate to this rider" because his insurance won't cover his injuries.. Why?

Some of guys need to WAKE THE FUCK UP... Seriously.

Because the CEO's of this country have sent the manufacturing jobs overseas to maximize their profits so what was the working class of America are now the McDonalds french fryers and Walmart greeters. That's not smart business, that's me first business. It's also short sighted because if it continues, there won't be many Americans left that can afford their Chinese made crap.

i have the hsa account style ins through work, true low premiums (13 bucks every 2 weeks) but its the same difference because you're just putting the money that you would be paying in premiums in the hsa instead (in my case more than the premiums were before). so in that reguard it is MORE expensive out of my pocket week to week. 4k deductable, 6k out of pocket max. 80/20 in network, 60/40 out of network after deductable.

i have only had it this year and have not had to really use it yet. This ins will stop you from goin to the doc because your tummy hurts and that i feel is a good thing. Too many people run to the doc way too fast. Im the type of person that if it aint sticking out of my skin im gona wait and see if it gets better. My wife on the other hand would probly go everyday if i would let her but when you gota foot the whole 75 dollar doc visit plus whatever crap THEY decide you need on your own you will to give it a couple days and see if it gets better. That may sound bad but its worked out so far.

What hospitals charge for services is a joke. 4 stiches=$450, 6 stiches=$750, outpatient arthriscopic shoulder surgery twice=$20k. Lucky for me i was still on my dads awsome free GM employee ins at that time and none of that costed us a dime. But ins like that is quickly going the way of the buffalo. When i got too old to be on his ins (and before i got my current job) i priced ins like my dad had, guess what, i couldnt buy it. Ins like that was flat not offered to an individual. For some halfway decent ins it was gona be 500+ a month for just me. I took my chances and faired just fine for 4 years. Saved myself 24k!

Im not smart enough to know THE problem with healthcare or how to fix it as a whole but i do know that the snakes in washington WILL NOT FIX IT!!! You think they will be subjected to this national healthcare plan? Heck no! They are on the gravy train and they are voting the way that puts the most money in their own pockets!

Seriously.

They should have better insurance or be prepared for what your insurance isn't going to cover. Pretty simple concept isn't it?

Some ppl need to WAKE THE FUCK UP.....seriously and understand what you might be facing if you crash and get hurt and end up in the hospital and prepare for it. Then we might not have these threads about donating to this or that rider.

As opposed to what? You got yours, I'm lazy and uninspired, so give some of yours?
Exactly! Why should the people that work hard or are smarter in business have to carry the ones that don't/aren't?

Because the CEO's of this country have sent the manufacturing jobs overseas to maximize their profits so what was the working class of America are now the McDonalds french fryers and Walmart greeters. That's not smart business, that's me first business. It's also short sighted because if it continues, there won't be many Americans left that can afford their Chinese made crap.
I believe we are talking about 2 different sets of people but I do see what you are talking about but I disagree about what you think is smart business. Smart business is maximizing profits. I believe they still teach that in HS business classes, if not I am sure it is in general business 101.
