Chad Reed, and Stewart aren't much different speed wise.

This "straight up" concept, and especially between Chad and James, has always cracked me up.

Everyone here who has raced much knows a guy who is marginally faster, and has consistently kicked your butt over the years (like James has done to Chad). Once in a while, the faster guy gets a horrible start, or crashes and loses enough time so that at regular guy speeds and in 5 laps, has no chance at beating you ( like Chad has done to James, at superman speeds). And do you, with a straight face and in all honesty, walk up to the guy and claim you beat him "straight up"? Come on.

James has owned Chad ever since the "pullover" incident. You know it, I know it, James knows it, and most importantly, Chad knows it.

Chad is getting closer, much respect to him, and if he can whoop James this season, more power to him. I'd like to see it.

I know what your talking from experience racing a series, however I don't think it applies to last year. Reed was all over Stewart at A1.He was so close that when Stewart's bike hesitated it took them both out- A marginally faster guy would have checked out. They exchanged passes many times last year. I remember vividly one race Reed latched on to Stewart for several laps before Stewart dumped it and Reed won at another event. There were lots of close races last year and Stewart lost several times without crashing. Let's not forget that Reed lost like 20lbs towards the middle of the season for some reason and when you weigh 150lbs thats an unhealthy percentage. The 250F outdoor rider that got passed after the "pullover" incident is not the same guy you see on a big bike SX race and a healthy Reed can win races IMO.
He was so close that when Stewart's bike hesitated it took them both out- A marginally faster guy would have checked out.

I think Chad was so close at that point because he had just been passed by James...on a bike that clearly wasn't set up correctly. I also think that James' bike hesitated because James missed a shift. I think James, the marginally faster guy, symbolically "checked out" by winning the next 7 mains events in a row.

I have all the respect in the world for Chad, but I'm not going to put my head in the sand and put forth the notion that Chad and James are equals when they are clearly not.

Your saying that James is marginally faster and the only way Reed can win is if James gets a horrible start or crashes and doesn't have time to catch back up... Im not saying they are equal but I am saying that they are pretty close in speed. Chad was faster (lap times) in both best lap times and average at A3 and I am pretty sure James had the bike figured out. What about the heated battle they had for an entire race (St Louis maybe) when Chad practically choked James after the finish? I have raced guys that are marginally better than me and your right theres no way I am racing with them if we start together but I haven't traded paint with them over and over throughout a series- and that description doesn't fit 2009 Chad Reed IMO call me sticking my head in the sand if you want

If the stats from RacerX are right (with the remainder of last season added), for James Stewart's career he has:

Starts - 57
Wins - 36, Some after crashing.
Crash w/o winning - 19
Losses w/o crashing - 2 = RV2

Winning % - 63
Crashing % - 33
Beaten by Ryan Villopoto % -
You also have to consider how many races James missed as a result of his crashes.

On your last question, no he has not. I think Chad is currently sitting at 115 consecutive main event starts, going all the way back to A1 in Jan 2003.

Although I'm a big Reed fan, all things being equal there is no doubt James is faster. Not by much, but enough to make a difference over a 20 lap main.

Of course Chad and James are pretty close in speed, but at the end of 20 laps RV and Chad are, most likely, going to be closer to each other than either of those guys are going to be to James. Additionally James is also the one of the three that seems, to me, to have the most left in the tank. He has learned to slow down and win by less.

I mean, you've pinpointed STL and A3, 2 races in a 17 race series. What about the other 15 races? I don't wanna come off as not respecting Chad's talent because I have great respect for him, but when you pull 2 races out of a 17 races series it's hard not to respond.

After A1 Chad had an 18 point lead. I think "pretty close" should have been able to keep that lead. James had a DNF and was still able to come back and win the series. I didn't make that up.

Also I think James silenced a few critics this year when he came back from the points deficit at A1 to take the title. However when you take into account crashes and everything else, those close point battles for the championship will fall either way.

Historically since James and Chad have been racing against each other in SX (5 years):

2005 - Chad 342 pts, James 129 pts (JS crashed out, only finished six rounds)
2006 - Chad 336 pts, James 336 pts
2007 - James 385 pts, Chad 334 pts
2008 - Chad 365 pts, James 47 pts (JS withdrew with knee injury)
2009 - James 377 pts, Chad 373 pts

It might be true that Chad has never beaten James when he hasn't crashed, but it's also true that James will almost certainly have at least one big crash per season which will make the points battle close.

There are such things as an "off night" that come into play also. IF CR is as fast as JS then he should have been able to at least win a couple more races and hold that points lead he had.

The theory of not being able to discuss "straight up" vs. "not straight up" cracks me up too. Sure, all the races count, but do you really think Josh Grant thinks he would have won A1 if James and Chad didn't go down? Would Andrew Short have won the East/West Shootout in '03 if James didn't wad himself up? Yes, the wins count, but if you can't discuss "straight up and not straight up" why even bench race?

No different to pulling 2 races out of 17 for Villopoto. Where was he for the other 15? Battling it out for 3/4/5 with Grant, Windham, Short, Millsaps i.e. the other 2nd tier riders.

Yes it was his rookie season and he did win a couple, but even with Stewart and Reed (and with RC before that) dominating the results it's the norm for 2-3 races in a season to be won by someone else.

He certainly seems to have the potential but it's a big call to put RV battling it out across the season with JS and CR with little track record to back it up.

In the first seven races looking at lap times alone CR was faster four of the seven for best lap and average lap time. Out of the total time he was fastest 6 times. When he was second fastest he was normally 2-4tenths off of best lap and 2 tenths off of average. Now with that in mind there was a string of races (three) where he was 1-1,5 seconds slower. New Orleans, Toronto and Seattle. Maybe he was sick? A 7th in Seattle is a little uncharachteristic of CR and most definately cost him the title. The title is "Chad Reed, and Stewart aren't much different speed wise" and I agree...it's not about speed it's about perfection. Funny how theres so many different opinions on a rather black and white topic like speed-

I like Reed, but I tend to agree that James pretty much owns Chad mentally. JMO...

BUT! What I'm really excited about it is Villopoto... why? He has nothing to lose and everything to gain!! If James waxes him, so what? It's James freakin Stewart... but, if he pulls off some wins (again), he's a hero!

I think (hope) that we will see a great series this year.

I agree, they aren't much different speed-wise, but they are different enough to where James is truly at another level. I don't think James even considers he vs. Chad a rivalry.

CR: A 7th in Seattle.
JS: an 18th at A1.

Neither are perfect. It's about minimizing mistakes, confidence, talent, timing, knowing when to settle, knowing when to ride the egde, etc. ...and yes, speed.

My unscientific, undocumented, and decidedly biased impression of JS vs. CR thru the years via post-race interviews:
Erin Bates: "James, it looks like you picked up right where you left off last week, how was tonight's race for you?"

JS: "Well, I made a few mistakes, but when I got out front I just rode my own race. It's all good, we'll just hafta' see what happens next week..."

Erin Bates:" Chad, you looked a little uncomfortable out there, what is it gonna take for you to beat James?"

CR: {dirty look at Erin}
"Well, we just hafta' make some adjustments and we'll be good. Ya' gotta be in it ta' win it."

I got nothing against bench racing, it just seems to me that over the years, the concept of Chad beating Bubba "straight up", is not bench racing, but , well, fantasy mostly.

The Reed that was bitch slapped in 2002 is the same Chad Reed in 2010. The 2010 version still can't beat Stewart. On top of that if you look at every podium speech from A1 to Vegas Reeds looks the same. When you are a 150 lbs and lose 20 pounds you can see it no problem. IMO, Reed could not blame the bike or his wrench while he was getting beat down week in and week out so he chose a illness. The bottom line is Reed is a pussy. Always has been and always will be.
I sense a bit of hostility towards Chad Reed.

if it wasn't for Chisholmgate, Reed WOULD be the champion. The fact that they didn't DQ the team for that incident is a blight on AMA rules enforcement. Chad IS the true champion of 2009.

its quite disappointing to read that around 85% of participants in this thred, missed my point entirely. I guess MX and Philosophy don't mix well for some people.

RMZ819, among many others, made absurd statement i was trying to address in this thread. The post isn't about who is faster; its about respecting the greatest racers in the sport.

It is well known Reed and Stewart dislike each other, but they have both stated in interviews they have tremendous respect for one another. My question is, why can't their fans do the same?

if it wasn't for Chisholmgate, Reed WOULD be the champion. The fact that they didn't DQ the team for that incident is a blight on AMA rules enforcement. Chad IS the true champion of 2009.

sarcasm with a hint of truth. Reed was all over James at SLC. I think he would have won that race if not for the Chisholm incident. That would have put him in the position to cruise at Vegas.

Not sayin' that James didn't give it away at A1 and Daytona, but, that's how it was in my eyes.

Do I think Chad should be champion for not having the most points...no. It's a series and stuff happens. The guy with the trophy girls at Vegas is the champion. Reed has held that spot just like James.

We'll see what happens in 2010 about May...

Not sure how much practice times indicate who is the faster rider..but if my memory is correct..seemed like JS always posted the fastest lap which was usually by .5 to .8 seconds faster than CR. I know how Allan Iverson feels about practice... My thoughts on the fastest laps during a race or main is the guy in 2nd has to push a little more and the guy in 1st can put it on cruise control unless 2nd is catching up...seemed like JS usually won the mains by 8 seconds when he kept the rubber side down.

On the Kyle Chisolm incident...I don't know why people are so pissed at that..yes it was a bonehead move...but it didn't knock CR out. It slowed him down by a second or two...but I agree it knocked him out mentally for some reason. CR should have used that to dig deep and catch JS. I think it was earlier in the race when CR passed JS kinda hard and sent JS into the bales which cost JS a second or two..but JS came back.

My thoughts are CR was .5 seconds slower than JS last year. RV was even slower than CR. I think that RV and CR will be real close this year and JS still faster...but CR will always be consistent and not make mistakes. It's gonna be an awesome year!!

Agreed, Chad is doing the rope a dope because it works. He is very calcaulating in addition to being fast.

Calling out ANY of the top riders in the world as "pussies" is bad form plain and simple and highly discouraged by GuyB many many times. Plus like GuyB, i take exception to that sort of talk also and would like to see less of that sort of thing and more respect for all the riders out there even the weekend warriors! Plus its Christmas so at least one day a year we can be good guys right?Smile

on a cell so cant type much, but the difference between the two to me is that james more so than chad, isn't afraid to ride on the edge. when chad does, we get close racing. when he doesnt james usually wins. the downside to james' approach is his crash record in contrast to chads.

its a classic case of the tortis and the hare, and last year, slower and steady almost won.

history shows as racers age they tend to tame it down. that could play a factor this yearr.

also, if you add up all the points from '05 - '09, including the seasons james crasehed himself out of, who would have the most points??? im unable to do the math now.

I think a few of you are getting it right with the comparison of Chad and James. I too think that James maybe the fastest thing on two wheels ever. However keeping it on 2 wheels is the key. I don't know if I agree with "rope a dope" , but being mister consistent, and not getting to rattled on the track is what makes Chad a constant threat to who ever is on the track with him. James is usually the only one that beats James.

Wish I had about a 10th of there speed and skills.........................

Back when he raced, maybe that was the case. Now? Not so much.

I know we're getting closer to race season, but no matter the time of year, you guys come up some interesting analysis. I'd guess that some of you communicate telepathically with the riders, or they're really speaking to you in code to let you know what they're thinking during interviews.

In other words, these threads are crazy no matter what.
