I'm on the unpopular side of this one. I like the rule and most guys, especially outside the factory level, always seem to be blown away at how gnarly the pro field really is. I like the idea of them getting a small taste, getting their teeth kicked in, and hopefully walking away going "Shit, I really have to dig deep if I want to do this".

Personally, I think it can help some guys make the transition as they can learn what to really expect before it's too late and they've gone full-time. Quite a few kids who have made it through amateurs on talent and just a lot of riding time struggle with the real thing. I'd like the younger kids coming up to be more successful and not get booted for lack of results quite as quickly. Our sport has seemed to have struggled a lot in the last 5-8 years it seems like. That's just my opinion.

It’s almost as if the Nationals need a development class……..

From an outsider looking in.

I see it as a great opportunity. Almost a pro am card where you can dip your feet in the pro class, finish off your amateur career before going full time.

or if you don’t quite make the grade at pro level you can still race for national titles at the level you either are, or feel as though with life you can achieve.

You mean like the vet classes at the amature national? Yeah. Pretty damn dumb.

Any pro kids should only be eligible for pro sport.

I bet none of you guys will be crying about matti jorgensen or anyone else that raced 3 pro races though.

I have no problem racing guys faster than me that aren't milking a system. I love seeing a fast mfker that puts 40-50 hours in at work a week who has never been paid by a factory to hone their professional level skill set..

"TrY hArDeR". How about no, they can keep trying harder and continue to race with people of their skill level instead of taking the cherry picking route and going at it with minimal training relying on their skill set that will never disappear.. Their fitness will dwindle because they quit working as hard.

A vet pro class would put guys together that have similar skill sets. Or, they can go race the appropriate A class at the few vet nationals a year. If they don't like it, quit.

Again, these factory kids who have raced nats, should be forced to be in pro sport and only pro sport.

They are only racing Pro Sport at LL.....

The level of talent in the B class is the thing I find the biggest slap in the face. Sandbaggers are gonna sandbag

I personally hate that riders who have entered a professional race that season can even race at Loretta’s. Or any amateur race for that matter. 3 years removed from the last pro race you entered and any former pro can only race the A class is what I feel would make the most sense. Just silly to have riders race their pro races then finish out their amateur career at Loretta’s then go back to the pros. It was way better when they all made their debut at the final 4 MX rounds.

Yes and no. Schedule doesn’t allow for it and I don’t think there’s a ouch money, OEM support, etc to make it happen. If we did, it would just be kids and their families funding most of it. There’s only be handful of kids with support in it. Think amateur racing type of support but on a National scale traveling every weekend during the Summer.

In theory, good idea. I think in practice though it wouldn’t pan out as nicely.

Is there a reason MXGP can make it work when they usually have a smaller turn out for their races and the US nationals can’t?

If you hold a current Pro license you are a Pro IMO you should not be able to be a Pro Amateur

Bingo

But they won’t dare piss off Monster Star Yamaha.

Fair enough, but maybe it doesn’t have to be at all 11 rounds, or separate east- west series? Development class works here in Australia and in MXGP. Maybe money and support would follow if it was there? Just spitballing….

Also I still can’t imagine why they can’t fit more than four races in the schedule? But obviously I’ve never been to a National. From the outside the current amateur regime doesn’t seem to work very well in the States.

So hypothetical and very unlikely scenario: What if the amateur actually won the pro race. Would he still be eligible for Amateur?

It's because with the current amateur structure in the U.S. they hardly race.

They spend all their time in a bubble at the training facilities and most only line up about 10 times a year at the Loretta's qualifiers, the big amateur races, and Loretta's.  Then back to the training facility.  Our current system turns out a technically good rider that has very little race craft.

There's still no substitute for gate drops, varied track conditions, and adversity.

The Lawrence brothers spoke about this on the WT show with ping. Very good listen and I believe they’re right.
