So... a major movie studio, has a 60 yr old Tom cruise jump a bike off a cliff and parachute down, six freakn times, to get a shot for a movie? That could have easily been done a different way (stunt man or cgi)?

Who insured the movie and/or Tom for that stunt?

I've seen stuff like this a dozen times before when the actual truth comes out years later....

If something is too good to be true... it probably is...

First off, Tom Cruise is a huge star, the boss, the producer. No one is telling him "no." There's a story out there of him firing an insurance company when they were filming Ghost Protocol because they didn't want him hanging off the tallest building in the world... He just finds a way to make it happen and there are insurance companies who are willing to take the risk (and charge a hefty premium...). I also remember him firing a "safety coordinator" or such who was disagreeing with him on something as well. Point is, you're either on board with him or he finds someone else.

Second, he is as much as a stuntman as anyone... He does this stuff mostly because he is as crazy as any of us who are ok with racing dirtbikes well past our primes and think it is perfectly normal. He lives for the adrenaline rush. Also, somewhere in the back of his mind he wants the perfect shot.

Knowing what I do about Tom and the people he chooses to work with, this is spot on. You're either onboard the boat or over the side.

Wow ! Mad props. He easily could’ve gotten a stuntman. But did it himself. New respect. Always thought he was a bit squirrelly. But that takes balls.

Great actor and probably even better stuntman. He’s been doing all his own stunts for years.

Nothing but respect .

Freaking awesome.

Puts to bed the 'its all CGI'  myth.

Sure am glad a mask can trigger you enough to devote more words to that than the "cool stunt"

Stay in non-moto where you belong.

Also, before you attack me, know we stand on the same side of "the aisle"

That's the best thing about the 007 and Mission Impossible movies, they use CGI as little as possible and just find nutty stuntmen (or nutty Biggest Movie Star on the Planets®) and just let them do their thing.

Very impressive and massive props to TC. Stoked to see he had the best trainers from the Red Bull Air Force by his side, John Devore and miles daisher. What a hoot🤘 He’s also a very skilled pilot and has a fleet of badass planes that he flies.

I would have been much more impressed had he done it with this mask and cape....

Its a rule I've noticed, almost without exception.

Road bikes get dirt bike sounds, Dirt bikes get road bike sounds.

and offroad if they haven't done the above, 4 strokes get 2 stroke sounds and 2 strokes get 4 stroke sounds.

It's so weird......maybe the sound guys have to justify their existence in this space?

@avidchimp Can probably chime in on this. I think he talked about it in the past. If I remember correctly it has something to do with the sound mixing.

Yeah, it is a sound mixing issue. The "thump" single cylinder engines make is very hard to mix without it fighting the music and other sfx.

I’ve been fortunate to work with Mr. Cruise on a couple different shows. For Jack Reacher 2, I chased him with our electric camera bike while he ran through New Orleans for multiple scenes.  Probably a marathon amount over a few weeks. The dude is a savage. He could tell me exactly how fast he was running in MPH and would tell me before every take how fast he was going to run. It was mind blowing.

The guy takes all aspects of his job as serious as anyone on the planet

Read all the books and understand the character is supposed to be tall, and built, and I understand i'm in the minority, but I thought Tom did the Reacher movies justice, especially the 2nd one.

Nice work if you were involved Smile

I read that they used 8 bikes total in the movie and 7 of them were collected by these two guys.

There's also a video clip in the article. The article is unfortunately in Norwegian, but maybe you can use Google translate. At least you can see how some of the bikes looked like after the jump😅

I’m guessing the swing arm is not attached because the rear brake rotor is on the wrong side in the picture.
