What are the downsides to the Fastway Air EXT or Evo EXT pegs with the ankle support? They sound great (in theory?), but do not see as many riders use them as I would expect for the benefits they claim.
You guys experienced negatives to this setup?
They get in the way in many situations.
As a 50+ vet rider that is working on trying to ride on the balls of my feet more, these pegs are a must for me. I just don't trust my ankle strength to be able to handle a big hit.
Some riders scoff at them just based on appearance unfortunately. If it saves your ankles and lets you ride another day, then there should be zero shame in running them. As for "getting in the way", ya I'm just not seeing that (which I'd argue the same thing for the newest version of an Atlas neck brace too - original Leatt sure, but not the new Atlas braces). I don't run the ankle savers personally because I have insanely strong ankles from working out/lifting weights and playing sports through high school and college. I have a friend who runs them after he tore his Achilles. Again, no shame in running these for safety reasons.
Been riding Moto for almost 20 years broke both ankles on a big case about 10 years ago
switched to ankle savers
havd never had a time when they were in the way obviously I’m not a national rider or even A class for me though zero issues

I have never felt mine except when I was glad I felt them. Not sure if people move their feet forward when they see they are gonna case but it was never a skill I developed, so I love mine.
I’ve used fastway pegs in the past and have always found them to lack traction and the pins where out quickly
I’ve raced local A, some big am races here and there, and AMA arenacross stuff on anklesavers off and on since they first came out of a guys garage in Tennessee. Here’s my honest opinion.
A) you’ll never notice them hanging or dragging on anything. Only time one got caught was on my chest protector strap when I tipped over in a corner.
C) NOT a fan of the aluminum pegs. Red loctite the teeth in, try to get the pointy cleats if you expect traction, and loctite the crap out of the bolt that adjusts the camber angle. They went to a “one peg fits all” approach at one point and provided Japanese bikes with a new bracket to mount a KTM peg to the frame. The brackets were soft, pegs would droop down, then I had to adjust the camber bolt until the bolt came out of the foot peg entering Freestone’s sand rollers. Terrifying. If they’ve abandoned that design, and gone back to pegs using oem brackets on Japanese bikes, I’ll order a pair or two of the steel ext pegs for my next bikes later this summer.
Can confirm for C) and Loctite on the camber angle bolt.
I run them on my bikes. I also run them in the down and back, and I run the steel versions. I mix the 10mm and 12 mm pins to get the desired traction I like. If I run all 12’s it’s too much. The only downfall for me is they do eat through Sidi CF3 soles pretty quick.
Love mine since I got ‘em.
I threw them on my kids bike, he liked them. He then used normals and liked those too, but said that extra support was the way...
I’ve used them before. Like someone else said, I never noticed them unless I really needed them. Only issue is I wore through tech 10 soles in less than a year. Didn’t put them on my new bike because the new gen KTM pegs feel awesome to me. But if I went with an aftermarket peg I’d definitely get ankle savers.
Have never tried them, but they always give me the "extra limb" vibe
I've got um on both my bikes and love um, wasn't sure because I thought they looked like training wheels for Foot pegs. Haven't experienced any negatives and I forget those ankle savers are even back there. If it saves a broken ankle or ruptured achilles, I'm all in.
been using them for 5 years plus LOVE THEM!!!
Will NEVER ride without ankle savers. I have nothing but good things to say about them.
The person (Tom) who invented them in his garage in Tennessee is a friend of mine. I forget what year he created them, but my son started using them once he moved to big bikes in 2010. At the time, Tom had not designed any for mini-bikes. My son used them throughout his amateur career on all of his Yamaha's and Suzuki's. He didn't have to use them, he loved them. He rode motocross, arenacross, hare scrambles and GNCC's, and they worked great. He had a reasonably successful amateur career and never once complained about them.
For whatever reason, the SX guys don't use them. Including my son. I'm not sure if it's in their heads or in their ankles. But they are the professionals, so I have to yield to their opinion.
I assume most of us reading this are not pro SX racers. I think the product is worth a try.
