tough as that Carmichael guy? The guy even rode with a blown up knee until he fit it into his schedule to get it fixed and rehab'd in a timely manner without missing races between SX and MX. Just sat out SX and came back to dominate. Saw him hit the dirt so many times I think my bell was rung. Saw him bloodied up a few times too. But through all those seasons, how many DNF's and DNS's did he have for any given excuse??
RC was a true champion and tough as nails, but if you think that he is special because he rode out a season with a blown up knee then you need to tip your hat to many others on that line an any pro level event.

About all these "health issues" RC brought all his own food with him to the races as I recall hearing and reading on more than one occasion. Helped to prevent food poisoning while out on the road. Also while signing autographs out in the pits for all the fans who just stepped out of the porta cans he always wore a fresh set of Fox gloves. He put more thought into competing than most others.

Very true. She pushed him relentlessly from listening to and reading his interviews. His dad maintained his electrician job while his mom was making him hammer out laps on the clock everyday after school. And since you brought that up, RC always seemed to surround himself with a high quality group of people. No show, no bling. Just straight up business. Almost like he knew it was his job to be somewhat professional at a young age. Hmmmmm....??

What was the most impressive thing about RC to me was how he had the ability to get out of shape but hold on and ride it out. If you watch his crashes he would very rarely let go of the bars and do all he could to ride it out and regain control.

Ricky was the same his entire career all the way back to his days on 60s.

I wouldn't think of disagreeing with you on that, mxr's line up every week with injuries. Just seemed to me that RC performed to the top level with his injuries and planned his schedule out well so it would interfere the least with his racing. And it seemed to work out well for him.

That is very true but Jennie was the one that took care of things like that so all Ricky had to worry about was his job as a rider. Rick Sr. kept the bikes running when Ricky was an amateur and kept the practice bikes running when he turned pro.

Everyone had their place and things ran like clockwork.

BTW: Rick Sr. is one of the most down to earth nicest guys that you will ever meet.

Ricky performed every time he was on the track and that had more to do with his determination, drive and HEART rather than his toughness.

No doubt when James throws it away he does it up right. The crash behind the start gate at High Point some years ago was the hardest smack down I've seen someone walk away from. James is tough. Credit where it's due.

Toughness is a point of view, like how much pain from an injury, or how 'hardcore' of a worker he is. Bottom line is he worked harder than anyone in the history of the sport, earning him the correct nickname:
G. O. A. T.

Even after numerous championships, huge slams, and outright domination, not to mention the Millions he had already earned, he would still go out and ride his freakin' ass off, just to make sure he did his best.
150 race wins.
15 championships.
Never lost an outdoor season competed in.
2 perfect seasons.
Only person in history to lap entire field. (In the mud, his worst conditions)
Coming from last to 1st so many times.
THAT makes him the toughest motocross guy in history.
Ricky is what Motocross is all about.
I remember when someone(some dumb asshole) put a haybale on an outside line on the top of one of the Glen Helen hills. It was AFTER the site-lap, right on the damn track, and Ricky nailed that sucker 1st lap, had to go all the way back down the hill and start from last, after being first and having quite the get-off, then absolutely killing the track after that.
We will NEVER see anyone be so into moto like Ricky was.

X2

I remember the Parade laps with McGrath in SX... just before RC starting winning... giant, angry, upside-down whips next to Jeremy's smooth nac nacs... It was a little shocking to see that much aggression during a parade lap!

Pure heart and determination to be #1.

I agree, RC was tougher than the rest.

I have to believe tough, that if the manufacturers wouldn't have gone the four stroke route back in the middle of the decade, and continued to promote two strokes that RC would still be racing.

Everybody wants to be number one,but when it comes time to doing it and making it happen, they don't really really want it.

One of these days, I hope someone does a biography of RC's career. I'll bet you'd find out he rode with a lot of injuries that nobody ever knew about. He's the toughest ever for sure.

I used to think it was toughness but I think that most these guys can take pain it's almost like he could excercise his willpower more than others. He's an amazing man. I remember when Stewart was having Gastro issues and pulled off. Im sure it was bad...I prolly would have pulled off too but see I know RC wouldn't have he crapped himself quite a bit outdoors but he wouldn't stop. I think he hated to loose sooo bad he wouldnt quit for anything... Imagine how muych shiat these guys go through and no hes no different...the only differehnce is he started and finished damn near every race for 10 plus pro years

I dunno about the definition of toughness round here. RC was tough, unbelievably commited and freaking fast but most of his races he just pinned it, hit the lead and there was daylight between him and second. To me tough racers are guys who run the Paris/Dakar or Baja solo, Erzberg, ISDE etc.
Riding through or with injuries is part of life for almost all pro riders, from back in the day til now guys are lining up every week with serious injury.

He's still the GOAT though.

G.O.A.T! Says it all. I miss RC being out there like no other. I missed Johnson and Bailey
and Jeremy but nothing like watching the midget pin it for 30 plus 2.

I'm not sure who pointed this out to me or if I read it somewhere - and I can't

prove it to be true - but, apparently, at RED BUD a few years back, on a very

warm Sunday afternoon, a feisty young savage cut the fastest lap of the

weekend on the next-to-last lap - of the last moto of the day, when the track was it's

shredded gnarliest. He'd had a fairly decent lead, which didn't seem to matter.

That was the legend of RC.
